Selena Quintanilla-Pérez (April 16, 1971 – March 31, 1995) was an American singer, songwriter, spokesperson, model, actress, and fashion designer. Called the Queen of Tejano music, her contributions to music and fashion made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century.

Coming from a family of musicians, Selena began to sing since early childhood. As part of the family band, she recorded several LP, but it wasn't until 1989 that she signed with EMI Latin and debuted professionally as a solo singer. She quickly became one of the most popular artists in Tejano music, a genre that was traditionally male dominated. She got bigger exposure with her breakthrough album Entre a Mi Mundo in 1992, which made her don a crossover into more mainstream Latin pop. The success of that album and the next one made her incredibly popular in the North-American Hispanic market, even doing special appearances in Mexican telenovelas.

Her career was tragically cut short when she was murdered in 1995 by Yolanda Saldivar, an employee for the family and former head of her fanclub. Her last album, Dreaming of You , a crossover into the English market that she had wanted to do since the beginning of her career, was released posthumously.
