Schoolyard Heroes provides examples of the following tropes:
- After the End: "Cemetery Girls"
- Album Title Drop: In "Centaur: Half-Man Half-Motorcycle"
- Anti-Christmas Song: "I Want Your Soul For Christmas"
- Battle of the Bands: Schoolyard Heroes competed in a Christian one, which they were kicked out of for covering a song by The Misfits.
- Body Horror / Facial Horror: "The Girl Who Was Born Without A Face". Oh, and it might be named after a real person. (link not for the squeamish)
- Came Back Wrong: "Cat Killer"
- Careful with That Axe: The end of "Beautiful Woman Hunter"
- Demonic Dummy: "Attack of the Puppet People"
- Early Installment Weirdness: Their demos and The Funeral Sciences contained very little of the horror themes the band eventually became known for.
- Gendercide: "Cemetery Girls"
- Harsh Vocals: Particularly on Fantastic Wounds.
- Indecipherable Lyrics: At her harshest, Ryann can be quite difficult to understand.
- Keep Circulating the Tapes: Their old demos used to be on Megaupload, but now they're a bit more difficult to find.
- Long Title: "Bury the Tooth of the Hydra and a Skeleton Army Will Arise" and "The Mechanical Man vs. the Robot from the Outer Limits"
- Looped Lyrics: "The Last Man on Earth"
- Lyrical Dissonance: "Boyfriend". A nice calm song about wanting someone's boyfriend to die.
- "Kill 'Em All", in which Jonah sounds disturbingly enthusiastic about the idea of shooting up his school.
- Metal Scream
- Nightmare Fetishist: The entire band, of course.
- Non-Appearing Title: A lot of their songs.
- One-Woman Song: The demo version of "Blood-Spattered Sundress" is called "Thea".
- One-Woman Wail: Ryann has done this in a few songs.
- Raising the Steaks: "Cat Killer"
- Serial Killer: "Serial Killers Know How to Party", and probably "Beautiful Woman Hunter"
- Shout-Out: A lot of their songs count as this.
- "Michael Dudakoff: American Ninja" is one to the American Ninja movie series
- "Contra" is one to the video game of the same name.
- "They Live" is named after the movie.
- "Nightmare At 20,000 Feet" is named after a Twilight Zone episode.
- Soprano and Gravel: Ryann and Jonah, on occasion.
- Surprisingly Gentle Song: "The Last Man on Earth"
- Zombie Apocalypse: "Dawn of the Dead"
