Sally Forth (Wally Wood)
Sally Forth was an American comic strip created by Wally Wood for a military male readership.
Wood's sexy action-adventure character, who is often depicted nude, began as a recruit in a commando unit. She first appeared during June 1968, in Military News, a 16-page tabloid from Armed Forces Diamond Sales. The title is a play on words — "to sally forth" means to leave or attack from a military encampment.
Sally returned July 26, 1971, in the Overseas Weekly, a tabloid intended for U.S. military men serving outside North America. With Wood getting an assist from writer-artists Nick Cuti, Paul Kirchner and Larry Hama, Sally Forth continued in The Overseas Weekly until April 22, 1974.
The strip was (in)famous for its title character, Sally, who spent most of her time out of uniform. The other members of her unit were: Lieutenant Q.P. Dahl, the childlike commander; "Wild Bill" Yonder, the team pilot; Kicky McCann, the martial artist; and Hairy James, the demolitions expert.
Not to be confused with the other Sally Forth comic.
- Achievements in Ignorance: At least for some time until Snorky points out the helicopter he is in with Dahl should not be able to fly, causing it to fall at once.
- Bare Your Midriff: Among other things -- Sally.
- Deadpan Snarker: Mostly Wild Bill Yonder.
- Fan Service: The comic, in essence.
- Five-Man Band:
- The Hero: Wild Bill
- The Lancer: Kicky
- The Big Guy: Hairy
- The Smart Guy: Q.P.
- The Chick: Sally
- Team Pet: Snorky the Martian.
- Ms. Fanservice: Sally, in essence. But just about any girl in the comic as well.
- Non-Human Sidekick: Snorky
- Punny Name: Most of the characters' names.
- Scenery Censor: Plenty, as the comic was not X-rated and never went beyond nudity, with critical parts hidden behind just about every conceivable prop (including other characters, possibly also nude).
- Somebody Set Up Us the Bomb: Hairy's specialty.
