Pedestal (fanfic)/YMMV

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Most of the cast.
  • Angst? What Angst?: Averted.
  • Non Sequitur Scene: Chapter 94, a non-canon story written for April Fool's Day.
  • Complete Monster: Stantler and Houndoom. Not the Pokemon, mind you.
    • Vaporeon and his buddies are getting there too.
    • LOLA. She has been feeding lies to Nick the whole time, to the point that she tries to kill Vai and made Nick think that NamNar is Matthew, his dead little brother. She also orchestrated the entire plot by enticing Nick's brother into going to the mountains. Or so she claims.
    • Chapter 153 cements Nick as one of these.
  • Crowning Moment of Awesome: The protagonist breaking out of a locked, burning building, saving trainers and their Pokemon in the process.
  • Crowning Moment of Funny: The Running Gag of the protagonist never getting the Pokemon he wanted. Reaches hilarious levels with Swablu and Krabby.
    • Also, he never gets to name them.
  • Crowning Moment of Heartwarming: Swablu becoming attached to the Pokemon Egg, insisting it's hers. When it hatches, she latches onto the Krabby inside.
    • NamNar deciding to forfeit, rather than kill his former Electabuzz. Though it really doesn't feel that way.
  • Die for Our Ship: Alicia suffered a lot of this when the protagonist has a crush on her, mainly from the Namnar/Hanna and Nick/Namnar fans. However, this quickly died down when she was revealled as a Lipstick Lesbian.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Nick.
  • Ensemble Darkhorse: Kostya and Ike.
  • Epileptic Trees: In the first half, there was much speculation as to where the plot was going. Chapter 57 promptly destroyed that.
    • On the deviantArt account hosting the story, the author has been actively sowing seeds for these among some of the readers.
  • Fridge Logic: Where did the video surveillance of the prison breakout go?
    • Lola took care of that.
  • Harsher or Hilarious In Hindsight: After the protagonist gets lost in Eterna Forest and ends up back at the start, he discovers the Valley Windworks building again, and in his frustration orders Des to set it on fire. (Obviously, he doesn't.) Later on, during the Tournament art, guess how the people running the tournament decide to get rid of the first round losers? Locking them in a building and setting it on fire.
  • Ho Yay: Nick and the narrator for starters. Doesn't help that the author seems to encourage it via Deviant ART commentary.
  • HSQ: The Wham! Episode, Chapter 57. And its aftermath.
    • Lola and Archie getting shot.
    • The whole entire story.
  • Les Yay: Alicia and Tessa's past relationship which may or may not have ended mutually.
  • Mary Sue: Deconstructed as hell. None of the main cast is anywhere near this trope, but a few of the villians are purposely characterized this way along with being genocidal monsters.
  • Memetic Molester: Kostya, unfortunately.
  • Memetic Sex God: Nick.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Chapters 57 and 58 make it clear that that mark was passed a couple miles back.
    • A smaller, perhaps foreshadow-y one happened when the protagonist decides to help with the breakout.
      • Definitely foreshadowing with the events of chapter 121. The chapter was even titled "A Horizon To Catch Up To".
  • Nightmare Fuel: The Abomasnow. And Froslass. Literally.
    • Psychic Pokemon. Especially unfriendly ones.
    • The actual nightmares.
    • The Tournament.
    • Sarika. Just Sarika.
    • The entire story at this point.
  • Real Women Never Wear Dresses: Subverted in the fact that Alicia has never been shown or stated to be in anything but a dress.
  • Tear Jerker: The protagonist meeting the Electabuzz he released. In a battle to the death.
    • The circumstances that led to Nick going crazy.
    • Hanna's Pokemon. Hanna herself.
    • The Pidgey chicks.
    • What happened to Sarika, overlapping with Nightmare Fuel.
    • Carlita being unable to dance, Oonu dying, and Ike being blinded.
  • The Woobie: The protagonist.
