Overwatch/YMMV
- The Last Bastion trailer, feels like the Iron Giant, it brings tears to my eyes. Any of the Overwatch trailers generate similar reactions and praises.
- Blizzard Entertainment, when are you guys going to make an Overwatch movie/Netflix series/Tv series?
- Arrogant Kung Fu Guy: The sterotypes associated with DPS mains, especially if they're the esports pros.
- Averted. Not all of the DPS mains are like this, they value their Support and Tank teammates.
- And the Fandom Rejoiced: Updates, especially quality of life ones (like the role-queue) and Sigma (a Talon tank) made the fandom happy, since they were begging and suggesting for Blizzard to add these. - Some of these suggestions were on hiatus ever since day one of the game's release.
- When Orisa was first introduce.
- They went wild with Torby's "Surf N' Splash" skin, also to him to be the first to get a Legendary skin for just about every event.
- Broken Base: Certain Heroes, whether they get nerfs that run them into the ground or gets buff to the point of being overpowered, though in a worst case scenario, not fun to play with or against.
- The Bullies: Some of the Overwatch gamers, especially if they came from "League of Legends" or the competitive scene. It has gotten so bad that the OWL fandom has a similar reputation as LoL's fandom.
- Blizzard implemented the "Private" and "Friends Can See" options for gamers' Hero career profiles, just so some gamers won't get bullied and harassed for playing certain Heroes.
- The bullying are the reasons why some people quickly use the mute button and/or don't use their microphones to communicate with teammates.
- Creator Worship: Fans worship those behind Overwatch, including the dev team.
- Hence the affectionate nickname of Jeff "Daddy" Kaplan.
- The writing team doing the lore and they are just getting started with expanded lore and not all was revealed yet.
- Do Not Do This Cool Thing: The Console players that used mouse and keyboard to play Overwatch on their consoles, are upset about Blizzard objecting on this method of playing.
- Slightly averted. The reason why Blizzard did this, was because console companies don't like the idea of the M+K fooling the console into thinking it's using a controller.
- Dueling Games: Overwatch has stiff competition with other similar games, like Paladins and Team Fortress 2 (ironically though).
- Now averted. Overwatch fans made peace with Paladins and TF2. - And vice versa. Except for Fortnite.
- Dude, Where's My Respect?: Some players that play Support, Tank, and main certain DPS characters feel like this whenever they play in a matches, especially in the Quick Time practice mode. Their teammates don't see them as equals and more like "healing bots", "fighting bots", and "lame defenders", than worthy teammates or opponants.
- Averted. Some teammates respects and hold their Support, Tank, and non-traditional DPS players with high regard and equals. In some matches, the foe team even praises a team's Tanks and Supports, if the latters plays well.
- Averted. Some players that play Tanks, non-meta DPS, and Supports are jerks and don't give the DPS players the time of day, despite that the DPS player values fair play.
- Some Overwatch fans are asking "Where's my respect?" And "Has Blizzard forgotten about us console users?", because Blizzard Entertainment's handling of the console is rather secondary, unlike PC.
- It doesn't help that the PC Overwatch gamers also sees them as a bit inferior as well.
- Fandom Rivalry: See the dueling games example.
- Fan-Preferred Couple: Pharah/Mercy, Tracer/Widowmaker, and Reaper/Soldier 76, just to name a few.
- Free to Play: Averted greatly, also the Overwatch community abhors the thought of their beloved game going F2P, since they paid $40-$60 dollars for it (Plus, buying the loot boxes and Esports stuff) stating that going to that model will be upsetting to them because what's the point of buying it when they can just wait for free mode to come...Therefore the ones that paid want some form of compensation. Others also argue that, unlike Team Fortress 2, the game won't survive a huge drastic change like that or they don't trust Blizzard to abuse a F2P model for the worst. Despite that some gamers would like for this model since day one, Michael Pachter predicted that it will go F2P on June 2019. - Most gamers don't believe his estimations and predictions, because the gaming trends usually prove him wrong.
- Others gamers stated that if Overwatch doesn't go Free to Play, it won't survive in the next coming years.
- Hate Dumb: In Overwatch's early days, some of Team Fortress 2's fans also accused Overwatch of being an inferior copy.
- To a degree, some of the League of Legends fans also harp the same "they stole character X/ character Z's abilities" accusations towards OW, too.
- Idiot Programming: Some players see some Blizzard devs as doing this, mainly about nerfing certain characters (i.e. like Mercy), neglecting others (i.e. Doomfist and Bastion), overpowering them with buffs (the case with most DPS characters (i.e. Reaper)), and not adding/or being slow with adding new features and updates, like more maps, and not fixing bugs.
- Averted, Blizzard Entertainment takes great pains to make the perfect game, so their programming is perfectly balance.
- Ironic Echo: Overwatch was advertised as a "Team Fortress 2 killer", but to some gamers, Overwatch took a page of the Valve game and is "dying" a slow death. Because Blizzard Entertainment's handling and direction of the game, the toxic community, Heroes being "updated/balance" to be too OP or too weak (This rendered some one-trickers to quit playing Overwatch), and some of the gamers leaving from whatever reasons.
- Also a bit worrisome was that other games that were hailed as the "TF2 killer", like Battlefield Heroes and Brink, kicked the bucket.
- Mary Sues/Gary Stus: Some regard Michael Chu making these, since he's a horrible writer for the expanded lore, since his writing is very convoluted and confusing. This is a very good reason to just play the game instead.
- Older Than She Looks|Vague Age: Some fans did the math and conclude that Overwatch's writing team, including Michael Chu, are part of the "Writers Cannot Do Math" club. According to the fans' findings, Angela Ziegler is actually centuries or thousands of years old, but looks like a teen or a guy in her early twenties.
- Pandering to the Base: Kinda played straight, Blizzard Entertainment listens to their player based to the point of occasionally mingling with them in the official forums and listening to their suggestions, feedback, constructive criticism, and ideas (Whether those ideas suck or not).
- Averted, Blizzard devs aren't paying attention or worst, choose to ignore the suggestions, feedbacks, constructive criticism, and ideas from fans that played certain heroes (i.e. Mercy, Doomfist, and Bastion). (Whether those ideas suck or not).
- Political Correctness Gone Mad: Some gamers regard the "Play Nice, Play Fair" update as Blizzard going to war against jokes, memes, and other stuff that is regarded as offensive, doing more harm than good and not what the US company intended. Instead of allowing the community to police themselves to get rid of the "bad fate actors" and trolls, which past games have done.
- Some gamers even regard the "Play Nice, Play Fair" update as coddling those that refuse to listen to blunt criticism or won't use the mute and report buttons when actual bullying happens.
Or worst, the radical feminists and the mainstream game journalists, who have an infamous reputation for hating gamers and hardly play the games that they are "concern" about.
- To them, it also means that the Overwatch team will be wasting thousands of money, resources, and time instead of fixing and making the game better.
- Other gamers regard the "Play Nice, Play Fair" as a much needed update to help root out troublemakers.
- Some gamers see the "Play Nice, Play Fair" update as the Overwatch dev team trying to be very Quixotic of them and fighting a Hydra, since toxicity and other multiplayer problems have been plaguing games like this since day one of gaming.
- Some gamers regard the story writing team for Overwatch's lore as getting gung on political correctness, making "safe characters" (that are made by a committee), and checking off a diversity check list to pander to Tumblr, who are ONLY concern with their shipping and political correctness, game balance, GOATS, and proper lore be damn. Instead of making well thought of and believable characters, like Samantha Traynor and Augustus Cole, in an awesome story.
- It doesn't help that these gamers regard that a five-year old can write better than the whote story team, especially the head writer, Michael Chu.
- Other gamers even criticize the writing team for putting minor genders and minorities as a way to stick it to political groups, like the North American Republicans, but there's not a peep out of Blizzard when it comes to certain countries, like China and the Middle East, were homophobia, racism, and sexism is the law of the land or part of the cultural landscape.
- It doesn't help that these gamers regard that a five-year old can write better than the whote story team, especially the head writer, Michael Chu.
- The Rivals: The Overwatch community is causal/non-esports champions and pros/mainers of certain characters vs. the esports champions and popular pros. Both sides sees the other side as being Blizzard Entertainment's favorite child and therefore ruining the game.
- DPS vs Tanks and Supports, Tanks and DPS vs Supports, or DPS and Supports vs Tanks.
- The early fandom wars, between fans of Team Fortress 2 and Overwatch, it made a bit of sense, because some popular TF2 Youtubers and streamers seemingly "left the Steam game for dead." Hence, why some TF2 fans dread seeing those who are still loyal to TF2 upload a Overwatch video or stream.
- Doesn't help that Valve does tiny updates and remains quiet to the TF2 fans most of the time.
- MatPat of The Game Theorists took a page from Eris, made a vid that stoke the rivalry even more, even stating that the Steam game was outdated and should make room for Overwatch.
- Ruined FOREVER: Blizzard decided to nerf and rework certain characters, because some of these Heroes are unfair to play with/fight against. But instead, they nerf them to uselessness, like Bastion, Mercy, and Brigitte according to some of the old guard fans.
- Overwatch became ruined forever with the introduction of certain characters, like Doomfist and Brigitte.
- The META.
- Hero X was buff to Over 9000, time to uninstall the game.
- Overwatch was ruined, due to GOATs.
- I can't play my Hero anymore do to the recent updates the destroyed him/her, time to uninstall.
- The Overwatch League played a part were the game is ruined.
- Casuals ruin everything.
- Hero X was nerf to uselessness, time to uninstalled the game.
- And stuns.
- Rule 34: Fan artists went wild drawing porn of the characters...Even the hamster!
- Slightly averted, Blizzard did a ceased and desist on these family unfriendly fan art sites. As if that's gonna stop the NSFW artists.
- Scapegoat Creator: Fans assumes that Michael Chu and his writer team can't write if their lives depended on it.
- Him and the writing team doing Retcons and lore trickles at a slow pace just confirms it for these fans.
- Jeff Kaplan, due to him being the face of the Overwatch dev team, so he gets blame for whatever nerfs, buffs, and tweaks that renders Heroes weak and useless or insanely Over 9000 powerful. Whether its true or misblame.
- The Scrappy: What is regarded as the off-meta Heroes.
- Serious Business: The OW fandom are insanely serious about winning, moreso than having fun and chilling.
- It's to the point that it's very easy to get banned or worst, reported, just for picking certain Heroes.
- Smurf Accounts: Similar to one of "League of Legends"'s own problems, there's those who make alternate accounts just to be at a low rank level, so they can bully the noobs.
- Worst is that Blizzard has no problems with Smurf Accounts.
- Going against the stereotype, there's a good guy version of this: People create smurf accounts to practice on Heroes that they're unfamiliar with and don't want to jeopardize their SR.
- You're a Girl, Just Play Mercy: Some of the women gamers get told to play as Support or other stereotypical Heroes (i.e. Mercy, Moira, or D.Va), by their teammates, despite that they can play other Heroes as well or average, especially other Supports.
- Grain of truth, since not all women has the lore Widowmaker's headshotting skills.
- Men and the LGBTQ gamers get told this when they play the Heroes that most women play as, since their teammates assumes that they're girls/women.
- Some gamers become one tricks by doing this for so long.
- Stop Having Fun Guys: Some of the devs handling of Overwatch, down to the famous Esports pros/competitive players, and such are seen as this.
- Technical Pacifist: Winglet, a popular SFM maker, made a video to end the Fandom Rivalry. Both fans of Team Fortress 2 and Overwatch love it.
- They Copied It, So It Sucks: The fan dumb community of Overwatch accuses Team Fortress 2 of this, despite that the older game is part of Jeff Kaplan (and many of the Blizzard devs)'s top favorites and was one of the inspirations for Overwatch.
- Paladins is in a similar boat as TF2, being accused of ripping off the Blizzard Entertainment game.
- They also bash other fps MOBA hybrids of copycatting Overwatch.
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: The minute gamers saw B.O.B. they're wondering why on earth did Blizzard not make him into an actual playerable character rather than a being Ashe's Ultimate.
- Blizzard not getting Terry Crews to voiced Akande Ogundimu/Doomfist, instead of Sahr Ngaujah.
- Tier-Induced Scrappy: Mei, Mercy, Brigitte, Doomfist and the Shimada brothers. It's basically due to how over-powered they are.
- To a degree, any new Hero that Blizzard introduces will begin as this.
- Toy Ship: Some shippers taken to shipping Alejandra with Brian.
- Tutorial Failure: Some Overwatch fans see the tutorial as this, outside of learning basic mechanics (i.e. shooting, how to do Ultimates, and walking/running), it fails to teach vital stuff, like pushing the payload and capture the points. Worst, is that those vital stuff's hidden in the Play Vs. AI and other modes most gamers won't bother clicking.
- Some Overwatch fans quit the game, because of Blizzard's idiotic handling of it and the toxic gamers that don't give them the time of day.
- Some of these same fans still hang around by doing fan media, like cosplay, stretching their artistic creative, posting up fan videos or fanfiction. Or enjoying others' fan works.
- "OVERWATCH IS DYING!!!"
- Some things that gamers "aren't allowed" to talk about in and/or during gameplay.:
- The lore is in the way of my superior headcanon and ship.
- Constructive criticism.
- The matchmaking suck.
- "You're toxic!!!" Spouted by those in a match whether it's true or not.
- Shot calling, sometimes it's because the caller is leagues ahead of them and they can't follow or they're already are doing the thing and the shot caller is a slow-bro.
- Angela Zeiglar's state, way moreso than any other of the controversial Heroes that Blizzard ever tries to balance.
- Makes sense since this topic will make everything explode, DPS/Tanks/other Supports (including other Mercy mains), rejoicing that a Hero they despised and/or needs fixing got nerf to the ground on purpose or unintentionally, the forums where topics concerning her will be locked, and its gotten so bad to the point that some of the devs got harassed over the balancing or YT channels have gone down.
- This made people love Mercy...And those that main her.
- Unfortunate Implications: Pharah's Thunderbird skins made some fans worried that Blizzard was yanking some clothes and plastering it on a character, because it's Rule of Cool material. Because it comes across as disrespectful to Native Americans, who had a sad history and that the North American company taking advantage of something that's ceremonial to the Indian tribes. Blizzard were prepared for this, since they wanted to make her biracial and with Indian blood.
- This didn't convinced some of the fans though, who still view it and Blizzard adding more backstory on Fareeha Amari and the Thunderbird skins' existence as still careless and disrespectful.
- Other fans argue that Blizzard wasn't being disrespectful to the Pacific Northwest indians, but rather is trying to bring them to the spotlight and jump starting people to go off and study more about them.
- What Do You Mean It's Not Heinous?: XQC walking around the Overwatch esports halls barefoot, it's against Blizzard's OWL rule book, so Blizzard decided to rain doom upon his doom head for doing this. Instead of kicking the controversial Team Canada gamer for more serious offenses, like disrespecting the esports casters and his infamous offensive jokes.
- To Blizzard Entertainment, if a gamer spams voice lines that deem as "either disruptive or harasssment" will get one suspended or outright ban.
- Genji: IneedhealingIneedhealingIneedheal-
- (Ban for harassment).
- Like the Rule 34 Overwatch fan art, Blizzard also did a crackdown on certain esports memes. emotes, and offensive jokes that are normally found in esports culture, including Pepe the Frog and TriHard. Fans sees these as controversial and deem the video game company being overtly sensitive, control freaks, and anti-fun.
- Whereas Blizzard was following ACLU guides on what is acceptable and is not acceptable. Also, not wanting to loose money and respect from sponsors.
- Back to Overwatch
