New Perspective Evangelion
"We face a responsibility unlike no other in the history of mankind: We have our fears - that which may become reality. And we have the Angels, which are reality."
New Persective Evangelion is a Neon Genesis Evangelion fanfic by Dartz-IRL.
A young Irishman finds himself forceably inserted into the Evangelion world -- by being forceably inserted into the brain and body of Noriko Nagato, a 14-year-old Japanese girl who has "miraculously" survived a plane crash, only to discover she is now the Fourth Child. But how did he get there? What did that weird dream with Kaworu Nagisa mean? Why are the real Noriko's memories coming back? And just what is up with the delusional girl in school who thinks she's Haruhi Suzumiya?
- All There in the Manual: The E-Mail Noriko sent? Can be found in the Evageeks thread.
- Anachronic Order Part 13. Starts with Tokyo-3 in flames, then alternates between the buildup to the Angel attack, and to its eventual defeat.
- Anyone Can Die
- Bittersweet Ending. Third Impact is apparently prevented - but still remains possible. But there's been a price to pay along the way.
- Child Soldiers: The Evangelion pilots. Moreso than the original series since their training is delved into in more detail.
- Combat Pragmatist. Noriko, who applies Boom! Headshot! to Unit 02 to win a training match against Asuka.
- Creepy Child: Rei and Kaworu, of course.
- Kaworu should be noted as having knowledge of how Noriko got to the Evaverse, which manages to make him creepier then canon.
- Crossover: Kinda one with Haruhi Suzumiya. Word of God indicates it's not really a crossover -- the girl who thinks she's Haruhi really is delusional, and the Haruhi elements have no real bearing on the plot.
- The Deadliest Mushroom What happens to Minamiizu.
- Death From Above What the Tenth Angel attempts.
- Deconstruction: Takes aim at any number of self-insert tropes. Was intended as a response to a fic the name of which the author has long forgotten.
- Doorstopper: It's thirteen chapters in and over 150,000 words long. There've only been three Angels featured so far.
- Eagle Land: A mix of Type-1, and Type-2, when the Americans come to visit to negotiate the release of Evangelion Unit 04.
- Earthshattering Kaboom: What the Tenth Angel attempts. What happens to Minamiizu.
- Emergency Broadcast: Announces the arrival of Angels to the city.
- Evil All Along: Kaworu, who orchestrated everything, manipulating Noriko to ensure that only his form of Angel-life would survive
- Follow the Leader: Inspired by I Was a Teenage Dummy Plug by Foxboy.
- Gender Bender: Deconstructed. This is Eva, after all.
- Gilligan Cut/Ironic Echo Cut: A rare text example:
Well, there was no way in hell I'd spend a few hours pouring through the latest in post-impact fashion.
I...I A few hours later, I was pouring through the latest in post-impact fashions...
- I Choose to Stay: Noriko comes to this conclusion, believing she would feel guilty for abandoning real people who'd become her friends.
- Kilroy Was Here: In chapter 11 Kaworu discovers a Kilroy graffito in the entry plug of Asuka's Evangelion. He has no idea what it is.
- Majorly Awesome: Major Katsuragi, who orders the largest nuclear strike in fifteen years, without blinking.
- The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body: Zig-zagged regarding Noriko, and deconstructed in regards to whether it's good, bad or in-between.
- Nuclear Option: When the Tenth Angel decides it likes being up in orbit rather than coming down to play, nuclear weapons are launched against it.
- Off the Rails. After Bardiel, all bets are off. Shinji leaves afterwards. The 14th Angel is defeated without him, giving him no reason to return. The 15th Angel doesn't attack Asuka....
- Self Insert: a shockingly good one at that!
- Shout-Out: Numerous:
- Shinji played a RPG about biomechs called Engels in Kensuke's club.
- Neon Exodus Evangelion: Before she learns her full name, Noriko speculates that "for all I knew it could've been Noriko J Croft."
- Also, the author discovered that, if sea-levels rose, MIT would be underwater. WPI was the first institution to come to mind to replace it.
- During Sahaquiel's attack, there are rumors of a "flash-built" rocket intended to send an Eva into space to fight it.
- Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: Partly quoted by Kaworu, when it's noted that the fallout from the nuclear attack on the Tenth Angel could sicken 20,000 people.
- Godzilla: King of the Monsters
- The short story "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" by Ursula K. Le Guin
- "7-7-7-7 7-7-7-7-BATMAN"
- The plane whose crash Noriko survived was an Oceanic Airlines flight, and OA seems to be run by a Mr. John Locke.
- During Sahaquiel's attack, Noriko quips "Kaworu's plane shot down over the sea of Japan. Spun in, no survivors."
- Show Within a Show: Blue Aru.
- Long Runners Ten years, and counting
- Schedule Slip Ten years, and counting. {[Spoiler| With one chapter purposely delayed so the author could post it from Hakone, on location}}
- Total War. It's made clear that all of humanity is fighting against the Angels, not just the Eva pilots.
- You Shall Not Pass: Angel 14, meet Noriko.
- Wham! Episode: Hikari is chosen as pilot of Unit 05. It is destroyed on Commander Ikari's orders after the Evangelion pilots are defeated by Bardiel, killing her in the process.
- Zettai Ryouki: Noted in both its meanings. A style Noriko enjoys wearing.
