Makai Kingdom/Characters
Several Overlords flock to one who has... *snort* tragedy befall him. Whether to help, take advantage, or just laugh, they are the most powerful beings in The Multiverse; and should one gain advantage over the others, they will rule all.
These are the principal players in the struggle for control of the Netherworld in Makai Kingdom: Chronicles of the Sacred Tome.
Zetta (The Most Badass Frickin Overlord in All The Cosmos)
Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu (JP), Crispin Freeman (EN)
Zetta was once the most powerful overlord in the Netherworld. Due to a prophecy from the Sacred Tome that foretold of its destruction by his hands (which he accelerates by burning the book), Zetta loses his body and binds his soul to the Sacred Tome in order to save himself. Since he can no longer conquer the Netherworld by himself, he has to wish into existence a horde of Player Mooks to do his work for him.
- Animate Inanimate Object: He is a now a Book. The Book, but still a book.
- Badass Boast: "I'M ONE BADASS FREAKIN' OVERLORD!!!!"
- Badass Cape: So badass it seems to contain a piece of space!
- Badass Long Hair
- Boisterous Bruiser: In Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten, he comes around looking for a someone that can give him a good fight, and is quite a bit more friendly than in his own game.
- Buffy-Speak: "'Sacred Tome'? HA! More like... Sucky... Dumb... Thing."
- Character Exaggeration: The Zetta Beam only appeared in a few cutscenes in Makai Kingdom - it was never usable for the player, even with his original body. It has since become his signature move in all of his cameo appearances in other Nippon Ichi titles. Additionally, the Zetta Beam also becomes more destructive - originally it was just a blast from the eyes, but when it next appears in Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories, it becomes a full blown Wave Motion Gun, and recently in Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten, it became a planet buster Kamehame Hadoken.
- Cosmic Keystone: Becomes one to avoid destruction after destroying the previous one. Oops.
- Demoted to Extra: Although Zetta appears Nippon Ichi titles as a Bonus Boss and Optional Party Member, he always appears in his book form and not in his original body. This is finally averted in Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten.
- Evil Laugh: Is really fond of these.
- Eye Beam: ZETTA BEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAM!!!!!!!
- Fake Ultimate Overlord: The only reason he's so powerful is because Salome has been secretly feeding him her mana power without his knowledge. He's not happy when he learns the truth.
- Flaming Hair: An odd example in that his hair is shaped roughly like a normal mane of long hair, except that bits of it flicker and float off like a crackling fire.
- Graceful Loser: He takes his defeat at the hands of Valvatorez rather well, mostly because he now has a rival that can keep up with him.
- Hot Dad: Papa is the Strongest Overlord Chapter confirms, Petta is Zetta's daughter, and Salome is the mother.
- Large Ham: Of the shamelessly egomaniacal variety.
- Mike Nelson, Destroyer of Worlds: Well, his own world, and unintentionally, but it's all played for laughs.
- Milky White Eyes: In both human and book form.
- Red Baron: The Most Badass Frickin Overlord in All The Cosmos!
- Spell My Name with an "S": Zetta or Zeta.
- A Taste of Power: At the start of the game, he's level 2000 and has a small collection of sword and dagger techs. After that, though....
- Throw the Book At Them: He's... not really a good weapon, actually.
- Tsundere: Fuka declares him the universe's biggest Tsundere after seeing his interaction with Petta, his Kid From the Future.
- We Cannot Go on Without You: If he dies, the Dimension goes kablooie.
- Worthy Opponent: Thinks of Valvatorez as such after their battle in Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten.
Pram
Voiced by: Kaori Mizuhashi (JP), Amanda Winn-Lee (EN)
Pram is the snarky Oracle who predicted the death of the Netherworld. She spends most of her time alternating between trying to help Zetta get his body back and mocking him for his stupidity (sometimes these two overlap).
- An Ice Person: Mostly in her later cameos, though she can learn Ice Magic in this game.
- Black Eyes of Crazy: Subverted in that she's quite sane, but the sclera of her eyes is black.
- Chained by Fashion: Wears manacles on her wrists for no good reason.
- The Chessmaster: It's pretty clear from the beginning that's she manipulating Zetta to some end (and reveling in it as the narrator). Carries over when she appears in other games. Anyone with potential is seen as a new "toy" for her to play with.
- Smug Snake: The only reason why she can predict the future is that she read ahead in the Sacred Tome. Without it, she's just a regular Overlord.
- Evil Albino: White hair, pale skin, red eyes and at least nominally evil.
- Kill It with Fire: When she appears in the game, it's by an explosion that spawns smaller explosions.
- My God, What Have I Done?: During the good ending, after realizing that Zetta still harbors feelings for Salome, she blames herself for starting the whole mess through rewriting the Sacred Tome.
- One-Winged Angel: Grows out her wings and surrounds herself with a pyramid-shaped aura when serious.
- Oracular Urchin: Mentioned to have reached Overlord status by age TWO. As in, two HUMAN years. Her young age is probably the source of her easily bruised pride.
- Prescience Is Predictable: Of course, she also cheated with some of her prophecies, but still.
- Rapunzel Hair: Seemingly knee-length on her sprite, but only waist-length in her portrait.
- Self-Made Orphan: She took the position of Overlord from her father at age 2. Zetta himself states that she only recently acquired her own Netherworld. Later on, you learn that she ended up taking King Drake's Netherworld, and he ain't happy about it.
- Token Mini-Moe: Among the Overlords. As a result of this, she also gets quite a lot of face time in the official art books.
- White-Haired Pretty Girl
Salome
Voiced by: Ai Orisaka (JP), Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (EN)
Salome was once a pupil of Zetta's. However, she doesn't have as much power as most typical Overlords, because she's been intentionally feeding her own mana to Zetta to make him stronger.
- Absolute Cleavage: Her dress is open in front down to her pelvis.
- Anti-Gravity Clothing: No idea what holds up that thing behind her. She doesn't touch the ground, for that matter either.
- Back from the Dead: Thanks to Zetta.
- Blood From the Mouth: Right before she dies.
- Detached Sleeves
- Feather Motif: When she first appears she does so in a soft explosion of white feathers.
- Guest Star Party Member: She's briefly controllable in the story mode when fighting Alexander, since the player isn't likely to be able to beat him on their own at that point.
- The High Queen: Before her love for Zetta pushes her to the edge.
- Hot Consort: Zetta admits he loves her in the end and in the credits she is seen wearing what looks like a wedding dress, strongly suggesting they did finally get married. Salome at (long) last became Zetta's ridiculously hot wife.
- Hot Mom: She is Petta's mother, basically confirming that Zetta and Salome did hook up.
- Incurable Cough of Death: Starts leaking power, most often represented by this during cutscenes.
- Informed Flaw: Is said to be getting weaker by the time she's appeared due to giving her mana to Zetta, but when fought as a Bonus Boss, she's the same as when she's a Guest Star Party Member.
- Lady of War: An elegant and powerful fighter with the best Attack bonus (170%) in the game.
- Love Makes You Crazy
- Love Martyr
- Magic Knight: She has the stats for it if you want to do this.
- Short Hair with Tail: When she was human.
- They Do: She and Zetta in the end it seems, see Hot Consort above.
- Worf Had the Flu: Her illness and giving Zetta her mana power makes her much weaker when she's fought at the end of the game, though she's hardly a pushover.
Babylon
Voiced by: Takeshi Aono (JP)
The Dragon God Babylon is the largest and oldest of all of the Overlords in the Netherworld. His old age has made him senile, and he has a tendency to fall asleep in the middle of a conversation.
- Badass Beard: In his human form, it also looks like he has a beard as a dragon.
- Black Eyes of Crazy/Red Eyes, Take Warning: In both of his forms, but especially noticeable in his human form.
- Dimension Lord: In his prime, Babylon ruled the entire universe. Too bad The One put an end to his reign.
- Hades Shaded: In his human form, his skin color is gray.
- Large and In Charge: He's an Overlord, and he's so big that all we usually see of him is his head.
- Lethal Klutz: Due to his poor eyesight, Babylon has the unfortunate habit of destroying planets by bumping into them.
- Mike Nelson, Destroyer of Worlds: He really doesn't mean to wantonly destroy planets, but, well, he's just so big and his eyes are going.
- Nerf: The One's curse has caused Babylon to lose his infinite Mana power and to grow senile...
- Brought Down to Badass: ...but this doesn't stop Babylon at all from destroying planets. By accident.
- One-Winged Angel
- Our Dragons Are Different: Based on Chinese dragons and is MUCH bigger than the other dragons to appear in NIS games.
- Retired Badass: Is the oldest of all Overlords, but has grown quite senile.
- Snot Bubble: When he falls asleep, which occurs quite often.
- Time Abyss: Babylon is the oldest Overlord, and considering Zetta and King Drake are tens of thousands of years old, that's saying something.
Alexander (God of Destruction, Alejandro, Asshat)
Voiced by: Kenji Nojima (JP), Grant George (EN)
Alex is the God of Destruction, and has developed a fierce ongoing rivalry with Zetta. Most of the time, he's directly tried to kill Zetta himself, but other times, he's employed the help of the Thunder God Raiden to do his work for him.
- All There in the Manual: See the little child next to Alex in the game's credits? That's his little sister, who has no passing or mention in the actual game.
- And Then What?: In one of the bad endings, Alex actually winds up destroying everything.
- Big Ol' Eyebrows: Keeping with his "thunder god" theme, he's got the big, comma-shaped eyebrows you'd expect from many depictions of Raiden, the Japanese god of thunder (ironically, Raiden himself does not).
- Blank White Eyes: When shocked.
- Fate Worse Than Death: See above.
- Psycho Electro: His motif when he appears, which extends to his servant Raiden.
- Suicidal Cosmic Temper Tantrum: He's got a bad habit of trying to annihilate everything when he doesn't get his way (hence earning the "God of Destruction" moniker).
- This Is for Emphasis, Bitch: "Who's the Overlord now, bitch!?"
- This Is Unforgivable!: Once Seedle reveals his true colors, Alex abandons his rivalry with Zetta to knock Seedle off his throne.
- Unknown Rival: Semi-subversion, since Zetta does acknowledge the fact that the two have battled time and time again. He just doesn't care about their rivalry as much as Alex does.
- Walking Shirtless Scene: Bares his chest constantly, only ever covering up with a shawl.
- You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Lightning-blue locks to go with his thunder god looks.
Seedle
Voiced by: Shuichi Ikeda (JP), Bob Papenbrook (EN)
Seedle is the God of the Underworld. As Zetta himself puts it, "He was a kind, brave Samurai until he got lost in the Underworld, where he kicked enough ass to become head honcho."
- Dual-Wielding: When one sword just just not enough.
- Evil Laugh: A mocking chuckle.
- Evil Sounds Deep: In the English version. In the Japanese, he's a tenor that practically leers every word.
- Eyepatch of Power: Prominently displayed on his right eye.
- I Was Beaten by a Girl: "Can you imagine the shame of a samurai killed by a pathetic woman(Salome)!?"
- Like a Badass Out of Hell
- Obviously Evil: While all the Overlords will talk about being evil, Seedle is the only one that actually looks the part. Not surprisingly, he's the only truly evil character in the game.
- Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Tried to rape Salome back in their human days. She killed him and got burned at the stake for slaying a hero.
- Rapunzel Hair: His ponytail is huge.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: Lots of demons have red eyes, but with Seedle, they can be taken as an actual warning.
- Samurai: Of the "masterless ronin" variety.
- Scars Are Forever: Seedle appears to have a scar across his chest, he may have had it since his death because he was stabbed by Salome.
- The Underworld: He is the realm's overlord.
- Walking Shirtless Scene: His torn robes are always draped down his arm, showing off battle scars.
Valvoga (Mickey, Ophelia and Dryzen)
Voiced by: Tessho Genda (JP - Micky), Miki Narahashi (JP - Ophelia), Takashi Nagasako (JP - Dryzen)
The Star Overlord Valvoga is often summoned into Netherworlds to fight would-be heroes as a "final boss". Valvolga consists of three independently-speaking parts: Micky, the head and torso; Ophelia, the upper body; and Dryzen, the lower body. Micky is supposed to be the brains of the group, but is often bullied into doing what Ophelia and Dryzen want because he's too timid.
- Ambiguously Gay: Micky. So very much.
- Ax Crazy: Dryzen.
- Bishonen Line: After his post game battle, Micky takes over as the one being Valvoga and becomes a smaller and more defined version of himself, although Ophelia and Dryzen still exists in his mind.
- Boisterous Bruiser: Dryzen.
BABES! MONEY! ALCOHOL! GWAHAHAHAHAHA!
- Bonus Boss: If Zetta musters up the Mana, he can wish to fight Valvoga. Valvoga is also the Bonus Boss for Zettai Hero Kaizou Keikaku.
- And in the above game, his profile states that he took down the ultimate Bonus Boss, Tyrant Baal, for good.
- The Chessmaster: Supposedly, Ophelia is The One; a True Neutral being who makes sure the Balance Between Good and Evil is maintained. The whole reveal is treated like a joke, however.
- Hero-Killer: Despite being one of the nicest characters in Makai Kingdom and probably the nicest Overlord of The Multiverse, in Zettai Hero Kaizou Keikaku, Valvoga is doted as such, the entire hero corporation was created to defeat him in the first place.
- Magic Knight: One Overlord with the stats for it.
- Minion with an F In Evil: Micky is possibly the nicest Overlord around. Pity his other halves bully him around...
- Multi-Armed and Dangerous: Micky has four muscular arms, which makes it all the funnier when he makes a cringing gesture with them.
- No Indoor Voice: Dryzen.
- Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Later games of the NIS multiverse states that Valvoga was the one who killed Overlord Baal for good, the supposedly unkillable overlord. How did the impossible happened however, it's up to our imagination.
- One-Winged Angel: Valvolga is intended to be evocative of such (which is why he's called "The Last Boss").
- Physical God: It seems he got promoted after Baal's defeat, Valvoga dropped the Dark Lord rank from Makai Kingdom and became Demon God in Zettai Hero Kaizou Keikaku.
- Split Personality: Although all three halves are presented as independant beings, and Ophelia supposedly being the one might avert this; Micky finally voicing his opinion in his Bonus Boss fight implies this trope, stating the he is Valvoga and the other two should do as he say; also Valvoga's true form only resembles Micky, no traits from Ophelia and Dryzen are seen.
- Third Person Person: Dryzen.
DRYZEN PICKS ON MICKEY! GWAHAHAHAHAHA!
King Drake III
Voiced by: Norio Wakamoto (JP), Jamieson Price (EN)
King Drake III is, uh... a "special" kind of Overlord. Most of the other Overlords don't think too highly of him because he does a lot more talking and scheming than he's actually capable of.
- Dirty Coward: Tries to sneak a wish into the tome while Zetta's asleep to win control of the Netherworlds, and then runs away crying when he's caught and called out as a coward for it.
- Harmless Villain: No one takes him seriously because of this, despite most of the rest of the Overlords being mostly harmless Noble Demons themselves. He's a very unsuccessful schemer and very weak in a fight. The most he can do is attempt to talk a big game and run home crying when his plans crumble.
- Incoming Ham: His entrance.
"You have all waited so patiently, and now I have finally arrived! I'm the king of the universe, the galactic hero, the creator of all things decently sized. Say my name if you know it! I am... **Stuff Blowing Up in the background** KING DRAKE THE THIRD!"
- Joke Character: Two of his proficient weapons are pies (which deal no damage, and heal the target) and balloons (which send the user out of bounds after use of a skill).
- He also has a 10% intelligence affinity. 10%. Most first-tier fighter characters have at least 70%. He is possibly the dumbest character in the Nippon Ichi-verse.
- Large Ham: Voiced by Norio Wakamoto, so of course.
- Mistaken for Gay: When he confesses to trying to steal Zetta's "junk", Zetta calls him a sick bastard.
- Petting Zoo Person: A lion man.
- Requisite Royal Regalia: Both crown and ermine cape.
- Nice Vrown
- Pimped-Out Cape: Traditional red with fur trim.
- Smug Snake: Downplayed, but present. He's a bit too boisterous to be openly smug and disdainful, but he clearly thinks he's smarter relative to the rest of the cast than he actually is, and he's a schemer (albeit with an unjustified confidence in his ability to pull it off).
Trenia
Voiced by: Brianne Siddall (EN)
Trenia is a mysterious girl who appeared when Zetta's soul was bound to the Sacred Tome. She appears to be goofy and aloof most of the time, giving cryptic warnings to the other Overlords one minute, and casually strolling along and chasing after butterflies the next. The reason she is able to walk out and about among the Overlords, even though no one has ever seen her before, is because she is actually the spirit of the Sacred Tome, who was pushed out the instant Zetta confined himself to it.
- Curtains Match the Window: A cool aqua blue pair of eyes to match her Rapunzel Hair.
- Detached Sleeves
- The Ditz: subverted, she's know exactly what's going on, she just acts clueless.
- Moe Stare: Default facial expression.
- Mysterious Waif: Pram spends much of the game puzzling over just who she is, and the answer is integral to the plot.
- Mythology Gag: Her bright costume colors reference Phantom Brave. Also, her calling out "Confine" when she returns to The Sacred Tome.
- Obfuscating Stupidity: Considering she spent most of her life as a book, she would much rather chase butterflies than answer any questions posed to her with any meaningful answers.
- The Omniscient: Is the physical embodiment of Zetta's Netherworld, and is aware of the past, present and future... so much so that Pram used to sneak a peak when she needed a good prophecy.
- Rapunzel Hair: All the way down to her ankles.
- Winged Humanoid: She has little blue demon wings, which is odd considering everyone thinks of her as just a normal girl.
- You Gotta Have Blue Hair: A light aqua blue, putting her in stark contrast to the more aggressively colored Overlords.
- Zettai Ryouiki: Comes in with white thigh highs.
Petta (The Most Badass Frickin Overlord in All The Cosmos' Daughter)
Voiced by: Kaori Mizuhashi
A new character staring in the extra scenario called "Papa is the Strongest Overlord" in the port of Makai Kingdom for the PSP. She claims to be Zetta's daughter confirmed in her mode, she has been sent back to fix a time slip as the prophecy about Zetta destroying his own Netherworld seems to persist in her time, Petta wants to erase this before it truly happens. Petta also went HD in the 6th DLC pack for Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten in Japan.
- Authority Equals Asskicking: It's on her rank, it reads as Uchu Saikyo no Mao no Musume, which can adapted[1] in English as The Most Badass Frickin Overlord in All The Cosmos' Daughter.
- Blush Sticker: On her second piece of artwork.
- Cute Little Fangs: Barely noticeable except when she gets a closeup.
- Detached Sleeves
- Eye Beams: PETTA BEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAM!!!!!!!
- Flaming Hair: It practically moves on its own, just like Zetta's.
- Girlish Pigtails: Has her constantly-waving hair done up in two pigtails, which double as...
- Mega Twintails: They are massive, almost making her look unbalanced.
- Kid From the Future: Claims this, which was proven true.
- Milky White Eyes: Her eyes have almost no color to them, but it's there if you squint.
- Mini-Dress of Power: A fairly fancy one at that, with lace and ruffles.
- Moe Stare
- Nice Crown: Hiding up in her hair, peaking out.
- Skirt Over Slacks: Might also be tights, but it's kinda hard to tell.
- Spell My Name with an "S": Much like Zetta, there are Peta and Petta to be found around.
- Superpowerful Genetics: Assuming she's Zetta's daughter (which she is), she's inherited her father's Eye Beams and her mother's Black Prison in Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten.
- Time Travel: See Kid From the Future above. In Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten, one of her her skills actually has her hit the enemy, then travel back in time one second and hit the enemy again.
- Time Paradox: Then she travels back in time another second and hits the enemy again, and then all three Pettas blast the enemy with their Eye Beams before merging together.
- Tiny Cape: You wouldn't be blamed for thinking it was just part of her dress.
- ↑ This because Zetta's title in Japan is slightly different than the english version (The Strongest Devil King in all Cosmos).
