Kamisama Kiss (Kamisama Hajimemashita) is a Shoujo manga series created by Julietta Suzuki. It begins with Nanami Momozono, a teenage girl whose father ran out on her because of his gambling debts and was subsequently evicted from her home, "saving" a strange man (Mikage) from a dog in the park. After hearing her story the man gives Nanami his house as a thank you for saving him. Nanami accepts the offer, due to having nowhere else to go.
Following a map the man had given, Nanami finds a rundown shrine instead of a house. Deciding that at least a roof over her head was some kind of improvement Nanami decides to spend the night. Only to run into, and almost get killed by Tomoe, who was expecting Mikage to finally return after his twenty year absence. See, it turns out that Mikage is actually the land god of the shrine and by giving Nanami the shrine he has just passed that torch on to her. Hilarity Ensues.
- Abhorrent Admirer: How Tomoe sees the carp princesses.
- Accidental Marriage: Nanami almost ends up getting married to Mizuki. Meanwhile, Mizuki almost ends up getting killed by Tomoe.
- All Just a Dream: Tomoe becoming a nicer dance instructor and confessing his feelings to Nanami. Turns out that the whole dream was Otohiko's Secret Test of Character for Nanami.
- A Magic Contract Comes with a Kiss: This is a shojo manga after all.
- Ambiguously Gay: Otohiko. He definitely looks and acts the part. To top it off he has a biohazard suit decked out in flowers and his familiars are show-dogs with a heart shaped collars
- Anger Born of Worry: Tomoe does this constantly.
- Aw, Look -- They Really Do Love Each Other: Tomoe and Nanami, naturally.
- Badass: Tomoe in spades. Why? Well amongst other things he kicks a War God's ass!
- Bad Boss: Nurakami is pretty rough on her familiars. How rough you ask? Her current two are her forty-second pair!
- Baleful Polymorph: One of Tomoe's favorite attacks is to transform an opponent into a game animal of some kind and than use his fox-fire to cook it alive. One especially memorable scene has him turning Kurama into an ostrich. The next thing we see is one of Nanami's classmates informing her that there is an ostrich being chased by a fireball down the hall.
- Beach Episode: Chapter 21 and 22.
- Beast and Beauty: Tomoe's a demon with a terrifying amount of power and Nanami is a teenage girl that keeps him in check.
- Beleaguered Assistant: Tomoe is like this whenever Nanami's plans go wrong.
- Belligerent Sexual Tension: Almost perfect description of Tomoe and Nanami's relationship.
- Big Damn Heroes: Tomoe saves Nanami just in the nick of time both from Mizuki and Izanami's servants.
- Bishounen: Both Tomoe, and especially Kurama, are so pretty it hurts. Mizuki isn't exactly ugly either.
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Nurakami invokes this when she first meets Nanami and pretends that she wants to do her a favor by taking her position as a landgod and also Kirihito.
- Blow You Away: Otohiko is the wind god, so him having wind powers only follows.
- Bodyguard Crush: Tomoe towards Nanami, eventually.
- Bridal Carry: Tomoe to Nanami after he saves her from Mizuki and when she falls from a ladder.
- Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Take a guess.
- Buy Them Off: Nanami tries to do this with Sukuna, by getting back his eye for him. She asks him to let Tomoe go in exchange and abandon his revenge on him.
- Cannibalism Superpower: When Kurama finds out that Nanami is the Land God he immediately thinks he can usurp her power by eating her heart! Unfortunately for him, Tomoe intervenes and teaches Kurama that this is a real, real bad idea by trying to feed him to Nanami.
- Cannot Spit It Out: A recurring gag in the series is something happening that causes Nanami to ask Tomoe if he likes her or loves her (and it's pretty obvious he does) only for Tomoe to deny it or invent some excuse for his actions.
- Can't Live with Them, Can't Live Without Them: Tomoe and Nanami's situation rapidly becomes this.
- Cannot Talk to Women: Suirou. Nanami eventually has enough and calls him on this.

- Cherry Blossoms: The setting of the first meeting between Jirou and Nanami and also their goodbye.
- Chick Magnet: When Kurama attends Nanami's school just about every single female student starts fighting over who gets to sit near him. Then Tomoe starts escorting Nanami to school.....
- Cock Fight: Let's see we have Tomoe and Mizuki, Tomoe and Kurama, Tomoe and.... are we noticing a pattern here?
- Cold Flames: Another favorite of Tomoe's.
- Comforting Comforter: Tomoe does this many times for Nanami even before he falls in love with her.
- Cover-Blowing Superpower: Tomoe warns Himemiko that this will happen to her human form if she ever uses black magic.

- The Cutie: Ami
- Deadpan Snarker: Tomoe.
- Servile Snarker: Tomoe is after all both a servant AND snarky.
- Defrosting the Ice King: Nanami to Tomoe
- Dude in Distress: Tomoe when Nurakami turns him into a child with the Luck Mallet. Subverted when Sukuna kidnaps him because it's revealed that he let himself be captured because he didn't want to kill in front of Nanami. Tomoe turning Kurama into an ostrich and chasing him down the school halls is another example and of course, when they both are locked in a cage by Jirou.
- Does Not Like Shoes: When he's not posing as a human, Tomoe always goes barefoot.
- Drill Sergeant Nasty: Tomoe when he teaches Nanami the Kagure. Eventually, his attitude does a 180, but it turns out that it was All Just a Dream, which served as a Secret Test of Character. However, Tomoe is still nothing compared to Jirou.
- Dude Looks Like a Lady: Suriou. The tengu children lampshade it when they remark that he is prettier than Nanami.
- Dude, She's Like, in a Coma: Both Mizuki and Tomoe kiss Nanami while she's unconscious.
- Even Evil Has Standards: Tomoe tells Akura-Ou that he dislikes senseless massacres when he witness Akura-Ou kill the women in the brothel for the sheer hell of it.
- Everything's Better with Monkeys. Mamoru-kun, Nanami's shikigami.
- Expy: Let's see, a Little Bit Beastly White-Haired Pretty Boy who is a Deadpan Snarker and a Jerk with a Heart of Gold, is forced against his will into helping and protecting a female Ordinary High School Student who is afflicted with Chronic Hero Syndrome and is a Type B Tsundere only later to fall in love with her. For some reason, this sounds familiar.
- Face Palm: Nanami frequently causes Tomoe to do this.
- Falling Into His Arms: What usual happens between Nanami and Tomoe once he makes a Big Damn Heroes entrance.

- Green-Eyed Epiphany/Green-Eyed Monster: Tomoe tends to be very condescending and rude to Nanami. But should any other man so much as even talk to her he flips his lid. A prime example happens in an ice cream parlor where Isobe is mocking her poverty and constantly belittling her. Cue a little panel labeled 'Tomoe Vision' full of hearts and Nanami and Isobe flirting with each other followed by a picture of Tomoe practically seething with anger.
- Happiness in Slavery: Mizuki to Nanami. Tomoe also eventually becomes this, though he would never admit it.
- Heel Realization: While carrying out the Honey Trap below Jirou's actions causes Tomoe to admit what an asshole he's been to Nanami.
"Hey Asshole! Just being a man and a warrior isn't enough for Nanami to be loved....It's like looking at a reflection of myself, seriously irritating."
- Honey Trap: When the original plan to get Jirou really drunk so that his wards are weakened fails, Tomoe turns into Nanami and starts seducing him. Since Jirou is attracted to Nanami and very much in denial about it, it works magnificently.
- Holding Hands: Nanami and Tomoe do this at the end of chapter 16.
- Horned Humanoid: Akura-Ou
- Hypocritical Heartwarming: Tomoe is sarcastic, rude and highly critical of just about anything Nanami does. But should anyone else insult her and/or criticize her he is quick to come to her defense.

- Joshikousei: Nanami and Ami.
- Kid with the Leash: Tomoe is a pretty powerful and ruthless demon, however thanks to the familiar contract when Nanami gives him an order he has to obey it no matter what. To say he is unhappy about this situation would be an understatement.
- Kimono: Tomoe wears them most of the time, and Nanami sometimes, too, especially when to celebrations.
- Kitsune: Tomoe, though he seems to have once been human as he has flashbacks of being a sick young boy.
- Ladykiller in Love: Kurama and eventually Tomoe.
- Lap Pillow: The old Tanuki-woman Mizutame does this at one point for Tomoe because he let her escape from Akura-Ou in the past.

- Lean and Mean: Ikusagami, Kirihito.
- Little Bit Beastly: Tomoe, Kurama, a few others.
- Location Theme Naming: Three guesses as to which mountain Kurama was born on.

- Love Redeems: Jirou thanks to Nanami.
- Magic Contract Romance: Tomoe and Nanami, of course.
- Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex: Tomoe express this fear at the end of chapter 16, although it is of the non-sexual variety. Later, Mikage tells Nanami that he sent her to Tomoe precisely because he hoped that she might be able to help Tomoe overcome it.
- Master of the Mixed Message: Tomoe, though later on he once accuses Nanami of this.

- Noble Demon: Tomoe used to be this, when he was still following Akura-Ou/the Evil King.
- Non-Action Guy: Mizuki seems to be stronger than any human, but so far he hasn't shown any fighting skill, despite being a familiar. Kurama's powers are so weakened by being away from his place of birth that he is very close to this, too.
- No Sense of Personal Space: Tomoe often is like this in regards to Nanami, much to her embarrassment. However, once he learns that she loves him, he stops for a while, only to fall back into the habit again. When he finally starts noticing that he returns her feelings after all, he goes back to being hesitant about behaving in this manner.

- Pretty Butterflies: Mikage is associated with butterflies and can even turn into one.

- Plucky Girl: Nanami
- Power Limiter: Mikage did this to Tomoe when he became a familiar, but it is later lifted with the Luck Mallet to beat Ikusagami. Also, Kurama's powers in the human world are very weak, because a tengu's powers are derived from the mountain they were born on.
- Really 700 Years Old: Tomoe looks to be in his late teens, early twenties, despite the fact he is at least over five centuries old. Mizuki also counts, so does Mikage (looks like a middle-aged man despite haven been around for a few centuries).
- Red Light District: Tomoe frequently goes there in the early parts of the story.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: Nanami is red; passionate, energetic, frequently acts on impulse, very extroverted. Tomoe is blue; is very proud along with being much more calm, intellectual, tends to think before acting and is more introverted.
- Restraining Bolt: How the familiar contract works when Nanami orders Tomoe to stop doing something, especially killing people.

- Shock and Awe: Nurakami's power.
- Shoujo Demographic
- Shotgun Wedding: Mizuki tries to do this to Nanami. Considering what Tomoe's likely reaction was going to be, this is probably not the smartest thing he has ever done.
- Shrines and Temples: Nanami lives in one and later she visits Okuninushi's shrine to attend the god summit.
- Skilled but Naive: Mizuki has quite a few magical tricks up his sleeve but as Tomoe puts it, he grew up in a glass house and has no idea about how the world really works.

- Tsundere: Tomoe is a sarcastic ass towards both towards Nanami and Mikage 90% of the time but there are several moments were he shows that he really does care for them and that he can be kind when he wants to.
- Nanami is the exact opposite. Normally she is very sweet and caring, but piss her off and the claws will come out.
- Voluntary Shapeshifting: Tomoe is capable of disguising himself as an ordinary human and even shapeshifting into Nanami.
- Mamoru, Nanami's monkey shikigami, can become a cute little boy at will.
- Mizuki can turn into a snake.
- The Underworld: Yomi-No-Kuni
- Urban Fantasy: The story takes place in modern day Japan.
- Vain Sorceress: Nurakami is a goddess but otherwise she fits this perfectly. Kayako is a lot like this, too.
- War God: Ikusagami
- Weak but Skilled: Nanami eventually becomes this.
- Winged Humanoid: Kurama, Jirou, pretty much every other Tengu. Kurama even uses it as part of his Idol Singer gig, were he pretends to be a fallen angel from Heaven.
- White-Haired Pretty Boy: Tomoe, Mizuki.
- You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Tomoe gives a speech of this type to Nanami before she dances the Kagura.
- Youkai: Numerous examples in the series.
