Hellblazer/Fanfic Recs

Proof that the remaining 10% is worth dying for here.

These are recommendations made by Tropers for Hellblazer fanfics, all of which have to be signed to stay on the page. Feel free to add a fanfic of your own to the list, but remember to use the template found here.

You can also add to the current recommendations if you want. Refrain from posting Conversation in the Main Page though; that goes in the discussion page.

Authors, and Websites

Straight To Hell

  • Recommended by Roo
  • A general Hellblazer fansite with a lot of info on the comics, but which also includes a fanfic section with a handful of fics from a handful of authors. The number of fics isn't huge, but what's there is worth checking out.

Crossovers

Dire Fates by David Tai and Rod M.

  • Fandoms: Ah! My Goddess and Hellblazer
  • Recommended by Roo, Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: With the three Goddesses of Fate all hanging out in Japan instead of keeping an eye on things in the heavenly realms, the level of chaos in both Heaven, Hell and Earth is slowly beginning to increase, and there are a lot of not-so-nice powers around who are eagerly taking advantage of this. Enter John Constantine, who after prompting by Mara and the Phantom Stranger, has to team up with Skuld to figure out how to set things right.
  • Comments: It's mostly a comedy, and plays many things for laughs by pointing out some of the absurdities of both canons, but the story does a great job at mixing the darker world of Hellblazer with the more gentle world of Oh My Goddess and managing to present a result that's wholly convincing. The writing style is quirky and fun, the dialogue is frequently hilarious, and everyone is perfectly in character—and Skuld and Constantine play off each other remarkably well. Highly recommended.
  • There are two sequels, Mortal Fates and Meddling Fates, which cross Oh My Goddess over with, respectively, The Dreaming and Books of Magic, but they're nowhere near as good as this one, and the authors spend so much time complaining about the source material in their author's notes (The Dreaming sucks, Keiichi and Belldandy suck, Tim Hunter sucks) that you can't help but wonder why they even bothered.

Sailor Hellblazer by David Tai and Rod M.

  • Fandoms: Sailor Moon and Hellblazer.
  • Recommended by Roo, Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: Minako and Artemis are back in England—Minako to attend a wedding and Artemis to look for a missing Sailor, who happens to be Gemma Masters, niece of John Constantine. Unfortunately, a number of mishaps results in the Sailor powers going not to Gemma, but to her uncle. Who suddenly finds himself changed into a woman. And the universe suddenly has a very ticked-off, extremely foul-mouthed magical girl to deal with. "In the name of the moon.... fuck off!"
  • Comments: Takes place in the same universe as Dire Fates, but is a standalone story. Seems like the authors got a taste for placing John Constantine into comically embarrassing situations with darker undertones, so they're back again with a Hellblazer version of a Fuku Fic. And John Constantine is not happy about the "fuku" part, though several of his enemies find it absolutely hilarious.
    • Especially funny for those who were part of the anime fanfic community in the late 90s/early 00s when it was written is the scene with a band of magical girl fans, who are all based on other fic writers of the period.

Hellblazer: Hogwarts by Camwyn.

  • Fandoms: Harry Potter and Hellblazer.
  • Recommended by Roo, Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: After interferring in a magical fight (armed with a half-brick in a sock), John Constantine finds himself in another world; a world where magic works differently, demons can't be summoned up, and children go to a magical school called Hogwarts. Luckily, he manages to strike a bargain with Albus Dumbledore, who has the following offer: He'll do everything in his power to help Constantine get back to his own world, if Constantine in the meantime takes the job as Defense against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts.
  • Comments: The story was written before Half-Blood Prince, and unfortunately, seems to be a Dead Fic... but the ten chapters that are up are really well done, with many clashes between Constantine and the HP world. Harry himself doesn't show up until chapter ten, but Constantine's attempts at figuring out Hogwarts and his interactions with the Hogwarts staff (and ghosts!) are thoroughly entertaining. Possibly the highlight of the story is the friendship that grows between Hagrid and Constantine—and Camwyn even gets Hagrid's accent right, a rarity in fanfic.

But For the Grace of by AmberDiceless

  • Fandoms: Good Omens and Hellblazer.
  • Recommended by feral
  • Pairing(s): implied Aziraphale/Crowley
  • Summary: "In the Eternal Conflict between Heaven and Hell, some beings inevitably get caught in the middle. How they deal with this conundrum varies as much as the beings themselves."
  • Comments: Funny, cute, and everyone's in character.
