The FBI
Mark Benford
The Special Agent put in charge of the investigating the Blackout due to having seen a Room Full of Crazy in his flashforward which has thus far been helping with the case.

- Badass: If the finale doesn't earn him the title, nothing will.
- Decoy Protagonist
- Double Standard: Gives his wife all kinds of hell for being with another man in her flash forward... but then conceals from her that he was drinking in his.
- Hot-Blooded
- The Hero Dies : we will never know if he did.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist
- What the Hell, Hero?: Was subjected to these many, many, many times by pretty much every single other character. Demetri even went as far as punching him in the face.
Demetri Noh
Mark's partner who didn't have a flashforward and is slated to be shot to death. Is engaged to a defense attorney and can sing well.
- All Asians Are Alike: Averted. In an early episode, very sharply corrects a woman who can't figure out if his name is "Chinese or Vietnamese or something..." "It's Korean."
- Berserk Button: Really doesn't want to hear that the future can't be averted.
- The Cast Showoff: The karaoke scene showed off John Cho's singing ability.
- Hypercompetent Sidekick: In early episodes, Demetri had a tendency to come off as this in relation to Idiot Ball-holding Mark.
- James Bondage
- Race Lift: Was of Greek heritage in the novel, but changed to Korean when John Cho was cast. The name "Demetri" is a holdover.
- Someone to Remember Him By: Intentionally invoked when he proposes getting Janis pregnant.
- Your Days Are Numbered: If the flashforwards come true, he starts off the show with less than six months before he is murdered by Mark.
Stanford Wedeck
FBI's no-nonsense Assistant Director.
- Authority Equals Asskicking: him taking down enemies in a bathroom stall, of all places.

Janis Hawk
FBI Special Agent tasked with watching over Dr. Simon Campos. Is a single lesbian. In her flashforward, saw herself pregnant.

Senior special agent often working with Demetri and/or Mark.
Vogel
Technically he's CIA, but he works with the main characters on multiple occasions.
- Blue Eyes: Of the icy variety. Particularly striking, given his skin tone.
- CIA Evil, FBI Good: Vogel's not evil per se, but some of his actions qualify as questionable.

Hospital Staff
Dr. Olivia Benford
Mark's wife and a successful surgeon at a major hospital. Saw herself with another man in her flashforward.
Dr. Bryce Varley
A young surgical intern reporting to Dr Benford. Was on the verge of commiting suicide befoe the Blackout due to having advanced stage kidney cancer. In his flashforward he sees himself still alive and meeting with a pretty Japanese girl; this renews his love of life and inspires him to go on living. Is friends with Nicole.

The Physicists
Dr. Lloyd Simcoe
An academic whose experiment is thought to have contributed to the Blackout. He is a recently widowed father of an autistic son, Lloyd is the man Olivia saw herself with in her flashforward.

- Foil: to Mark Benford. Where Mark is harsh and know-it-better-than-thou, Lloyd is gentle and willing to apologize for what turns out to not have been his fault.
- The Rival: to Mark for Olivia's affections.

Dr. Simon Campos
A brilliant young quantum physicist and Lloyd's research partner.

A physicist involved in engineering the Global Blackout phenomenon. Goes by the alias D. Gibbons, taken from Didi Gibbons' cloned credit card. Killed by Alda Herzog in the episode "The Garden of Forking Paths".

Aaron Stark
A recovering alcoholic himself, he is Mark Benford's sponsor and close friend. Is estranged from his wife; has a daughter is believed to have been killed on military duty.
