Domina/Characters
Paladins
The group of five chosen by Butler to defend Domina from the screamers. Originally, Adam wasn't supposed to be included, until Butler realized he was a "natural-born killer."
Adam Andrew Anders
The new guy in the city, there for school. Quickly becomes Derek's roommate, although he was supposed to room with his internet friend Dale.
- Alliterative Name
- Badass: He's noted to be a "natural-born killer."
- Badass Normal: Enforced. He is lutum informis, so the toy maker is next to useless on him.
- The Lancer: Maybe.
- Meaningful Name: All three of his names mean approximately "man."
- The Team Normal: The only one without powers.
- The Watson
Derek Huntsman
Adam's roommate, and The Hero. He suspects that Adam's friend is dead, but doesn't have the heart to tell him.
- Barrier Warrior
- Battle Couple: Something like that with Akane.
- Chronic Hero Syndrome: He rescues people on a daily basis.
- Clueless Chick Magnet: Lily claims that every girl he meets is in love with him.
- Hair of Gold
- The Hero: Oh yes.
- Innocent Blue Eyes
- Lantern Jaw of Justice: Occasional mention is made of his "strong chin."
Laura Medina
A girl who grew up in Domina City and is going to Akamatsu University for school. Childhood Friends with Elizabeth and Derek.
- Character Tics: She touches her necklace when she's nervous.
- Childhood Friends: With Derek and Elizabeth, until they were eleven.
- Kuudere: She's cold to pretty much everyone, but does care.
- Living Lie Detector: Her power. It's specifically noted that half truths slip right by.
- Memento MacGuffin: She wears her mother's engagement ring on a necklace.
- Noodle Incident: The reason she left South Central when she was eleven. All we know is that she blames Derek.
- The Smart Guy
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: Arguably the tomboy to Elizabeth's girly girl.
- What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: Lie detection wouldn't be that good anyway, but it's not even reliable.
Akane Akiyama
Another friend of Derek's, who he's known for years. For some reason yet to be explained, she follows Derek's orders explicitly.
- Action Girl
- Battle Couple: Something like that with Derek.
- Childhood Friends: Derek's, after Laura left.
- Hot Chick with a Sword: She carries around a real katana, which she apparently uses in kendo.
- The Lancer
- Super Speed
- The Quiet One: She's very shy around new people.
Ling Yu
A native of Domina, but new to Derek's social circle. Rooming with Akane, and obsessed with anime.
- Action Girl: She's actually an athlete.
- Anime Chinese Girl: Considering how much anime she watches, this may be invoked.
- The Big Guy: Although she's short, she's on the soccer team, and she has an offensive power. She also notes more than once that she's not very smart.
- Dishing Out Dirt
- Occidental Otaku: Namechecked. Well, not the "occidental" part.
- Odango Hair
- Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Five feet tall and kicking ass.
Necessarius
The biggest gang in the city, which uses a simple red and black band as its emblem. The name translates to "Necessary," which seems to sum them up pretty well.
MC
The switchboard operator for the entire city.
- Big Brother Is Watching: Of the benevolent variant.
- Do Not Call Me Paul: Her real name is Mary Christina, but she hates that name.
- Full-Name Basis: Butler is the only one who calls her by her full name.
- Mission Control
- Voice with an Internet Connection: For the Paladins on missions.
Artemis Butler
A powerful gang lord who gained power by killing everyone who got in his way, but also by honoring deals and promises.
- Big Good: Maybe.
- Evil Albino / Heroic Albino: Heavily implied, though which is up for debate.
- Large and In Charge: It's mentioned several times that he is huge.
- Necessarily Evil: His gang is named Necessarius, Latin for "Necessary."
- Reasonable Authority Figure: Despite being a gang lord.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: Again, he named his gang Necessarius.
Drakela Sanguinas
The leader of the retinue, the Necessarian team assigned to support the Paladins. A vampire, and an ex-Belian (whatever that is).
- Do Not Call Me Paul: She doesn't particularly like her name, even though she chose it, so she usually goes by Kelly.
- Odd Friendship: Alex is a close friend of hers, and is an angel. Although no attention has been drawn to it, considering what we know about angels and vampires, it seems strange.
- Our Vampires Are Different
- Plain Name: For a vampire, any variant of Dracula (such as Drakela) is as common as John or Jane.
Alex Gabriel
An angel working for Necessarius and Kelly's second in command in the retinue.
- Ambiguous Gender: Although Kelly refers to him in male pronouns for convienence, Adam assumes he is a girl. Of course, "he" is neither.
- No Biological Sex: As part of a show of commitment to the cause, "he" became gender-neutral.
- Odd Friendship: Kelly is a close friend of his, and is a vampire. Although no attention has been drawn to it, considering what we know about angels and vampires, it seems strange.
- Our Angels Are Different
Jarasax of the Blood-Doused Hunters
A changeling member of the retinue.
- Aerith and Bob: Has an absurd name with no explanation, unlike everyone else, who have at least some reason behind the weird names.
- Dark and Troubled Past: He's a changeling, an escaped slave of the fey, so this is implied.
- The Driver: Seems to be his main job.
Kat
A mute fel anthro member of the retinue.
- Catgirl: Mostly of the "dangerous" variant.
- Cold Sniper
- Cute Mute: Definitely mute, but jury's still out on "cute."
- Petting Zoo People: A fel anthro.
George
A giant member of the retinue.
- The Big Guy: Well, he's a giant.
- More Dakka: He carries around a minigun, and explicitly describes his job as "Spreading bullets like water."
- Our Giants Are Different: Technically an ogre, which is apparently just a giant with the cannabilism buff.
The Composer
The Composer
Apparently the source of the screamers. Very little is known about him, including "his" gender, other than that he likes killing.
- Axe Crazy: He considers it a show of willpower when he doesn't torture someone just because he can.
- Big Bad
- The Chessmaster
- The Faceless
- No Name Given: For every other scene from a certain character's view for the first time, they start with "My name is ___" and a few facts about themselves. Not the Composer. Even that title was Word of God.
- Plaguemaster: Maybe. He's behind the zombies, but his method of creation is a little bit...odd, so it may not count.
- Pragmatic Villainy: He'd cheerfully slaughter everything in reach, but eventually he'd run out of things. So he's doing it another way.
Other Characters
Lily
A girl who looks like a demon, and one of Derek's friends.
- Our Demons Are Different: She has horns, red eyes, fangs, and a tail. The tail is new.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: Subverted; she doesn't seem like a bad person.
- Why Do You Keep Changing Jobs?: She has at least two, and implies she has more. Derek claims she has "billions."
Elizabeth Greene
Another native of Domina, and a childhood friend of Derek, Laura, and Akane. Somewhat of a satellite character. She has a power, though exactly what has yet to be revealed.
- The Chick: She's not quite a member of the Five-Man Band, but Derek and Laura try and keep her out of harm's way.
- Childhood Friends: To both Derek and Laura.
- Cunning Linguist: Zusa notes that she speaks both Vietnamese and Yiddish fluently, and no one seems surprised.
- Eyes of Gold: She does have a power, but we don't know what it is yet.
- Locked Out of the Loop: The others are intentionally keeping their role as Paladins away from her.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: The girly one to Laura's tomboy.
Simon Lancaster
A native of Domina and friend to Derek and Akane. He and his sister have at least one class with the pair. He recently joined the sibriex.
- Amazing Technicolor Population/You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Purple skin and green hair. He mentions that this is actually somewhat low-key for a sibriex.
- Big Brother Instinct: To Seena, a little bit more than she is comfortable with.
Seena Lancaster
Another native of Domina and friend to Derek and Akane. She and her brother have at least one class with the pair. She recently joined the Mals.
- All Love Is Unrequited: Another one in love with Derek.
- Amazing Technicolor Population/You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Jet-black skin and hair, to match her nighteyes.
- Hitman with a Heart: She believes her new subculture, the Mals, are this. Others are not as convinced.
- Our Vampires Are Different: She recently joined the Mals, vampire assassins.
