Bubblegum Crisis/Characters
Note that the tropes listed here are based on the characters' depictions in the OVA series, not Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040.
The Knight Sabers
Priscilla S. Asagiri (or Priss for short)
Played by: Kinuko Oomori (Japanese, Bubblegum Crisis), Ryoko Tachikawa (Japanese, Bubblegum Crash), Sinda Nichols (English), Catherine Desplaces (French), Joel Mulachs (Spanish, Bubblegum Crisis), Maria Rosa Guillén (Spanish, Bubblegum Crash), Barbara De Bortoli (Italian)
Sylia Stingray
Played by: Yoshiko Sakakibara (Japanese), Jemila Ericson (English), Isabelle Volpe (French), Mercedes Domingo (Spanish, Bubblegum Crisis), Sofia Garcia (Spanish, Bubblegum Crash), Antonella Baldini (Italian)
- Alliterative Name
- Awesome McCoolname
- Brainy Bluenette
- Cool Big Sis: has a younger brother called Mackie.
- Cool Sword: Those blades on her gauntlets.
- Hollywood Cyborg / Transhuman -- maybe. It's complicated.
- The Lancer: While Priss is the POV character, Sylia is the official leader.
- Modesty Bedsheet: She sleeps in the nude. Of course we don't see anything.
- The Ojou
- Power Hair: Possible Actor Allusion, since Yoshiko Sakakibara has the same hairstyle.
- Rich Idiot With No Day Job: Mild-mannered lingerie store owner by day, power-armored mercenary/vigilante by night.
- Tall, Dark and Bishoujo: Despite having short hair.
- You Killed My Father: Thanks a lot, Brian J. Mason!
Linna Yamazaki
Played by: Michie Tomizawa (Japanese), Elizabeth Becka (English), Christèle Billault (French), Mercedes Diemand-Hartz (Spanish, Bubblegum Crisis), Carmen Calvell (Spanish, Bubblegum Crash), Ilaria Latini (Italian)
- The Big Guy: Quite skilled in close combat.
- Ms. Vice Guy: Linna was the member most vocally concerned about how much money the Sabers made off of each mission, would cheerfully dump a boyfriend with low earning potential, and leveled up into a yuppie stockbroker in Crash. Still, she would happily ignore money for more important things -- for instance, being happy that the Kill Sat controller was apparently destroyed in the second episode, even though that meant no pay for the mission, because it was payback for Genom killing Irene.
- Plucky Girl
- Razor Floss: Uses razor-sharp ribbons from her suit's helmet to cut through her enemies.
- Spell My Name with an "S": though "L" is pronounced "R" in Japan, the anime had her English-letter name beginning with "L".
Nene Romanova
Played by: Akiko Hiramatsu (Japanese), Susan Grillo (English), Laëtitia Godes (French), Victoria Ramos (Spanish, Bubblegum Crisis), Ariadna Jiménez (Spanish, Bubblegum Crash), Federica De Bortoli (Italian)
- By-The-Book Cop: Civilian job is with the A.D. Police.
- Fiery Redhead: Averted - she's a redhead, but she's more The Chick until she Takes a Level In Badass in OAV 8.
- Genki Girl
- The Smart Guy
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: She is Girly Girl to the other three members, especially Priss.
- Weight Woe
The Genom Corporation
Quincy
Played by: Kiyoshi Kawakubo (Japanese), David Arnold (English), Bruno Magne (French), Alberto Trifol (Spanish)
- Big Bad
- Decoy Getaway
- Only One Name: We don't even know for sure if "Quincy" is his given name or his surname, although the latter is more likely.
Brian J. Mason
Played by: Shuichi Ikeda (Japanese), Eric Paisley (English), Emmanuel Rausenberger (French), Xavier Fernández (Spanish)
Largo
Played by: Kazuyuki Sogabe (Japanese), Pierre Brulator (English), Carlos Lladó (Spanish, Bubblegum Crash)
- Dark Messiah
- Evil Laugh
- Hijacked by Ganon: He's Brian J. Mason reborn.
- Luke, I Am Your Father: His inhuman species could be the same as Sylia's.
- Manipulative Bastard
- Mismatched Eyes: One gold, one silver.
- White-Haired Pretty Boy
Kate Madigan
Played by: Urara Takano (Japanese), Emily Young (English)
- The Dragon: Replaces Mason, if only for the sixth OVA.
- Hypercompetent Sidekick: She immediately figured out that "Milly Jackson" (Anri) was suspicious and through investigation learned she had access to top secret information. How did she know Anri was suspicious? She hadn't seen her before.
- One-Scene Wonder: A subversion. She only appears in Red Eyes.
- Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: In the English dub she's got an Irish accent.
- Sexy Secretary
- What Happened to the Mouse?: It's unclear whether she died or only passed out when Largo attacked the Boomers in Quincy's office, but she's never seen again.
- You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Shoots the defense minister Largo kidnapped the minute he's handed back to Genom.
Others
Leon McNichol
Played by: Toshio Furukawa (Japanese), Brad Moranz (English), Bruno Meyere (French), Oriol Rafel (Spanish, Bubblegum Crisis), Tasio Alonso (Spanish, Bubblegum Crash), Luciano Marchitiello (Italian)
- Bishie Sparkle
- Casanova Wannabe
- Cool Shades / Sunglasses at Night
- Cowboy Cop
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Goes from goofy Priss fanboy to the pride of the ADP in less than six seconds.
- Elite Mook: Compared to the rest of the A.D. Police.
- Made of Iron
- Secret Secret Keeper: Becomes this in the sixth OVA, where it's revealed that he managed to see Priss' face during the fight in the last episode. This becomes awkward since this is the episode where Largo has a team of Evil Knockoff Sabers wreaking havoc.
- Well, Excuse Me, Princess!: The argument with Priss.
Daley Wong
Played by: Kenyuu Horiuchi (Japanese), Marshall Carroll (English), Jordi Naro (Spanish, Bubblegum Crash), Jérémy Zylberberg (French), Roberto Del Giudice (Italian)
- Blue Oni: To Leon's red.
- Camp Gay: Not full-on CAMP, but definitely fabulous. (Daley's 2040 incarnation is more Invisible to Gaydar.)
- Pet Homosexual
Mackie Stingray
Played by: Kenyuu Horiuchi (Japanese), Frank Trimble (English), Arnaud Laurent (French), Jordi Pons (Spanish, Bubblegum Crisis), Carlos Lladó (Spanish, Bubblegum Crash)
- Cool Loser
- Geek
- Handsome Lech: Slightly subverted since he isn't as nice about it as other people on the list. He peeks at his own sister for goodness sake. Nevertheless he does fit this trope more as it hints he might have genuine feelings for Nene.
- Real Men Wear Pink: If the Knight Sabers were a Five-Man Band, then the only GUY in the group would be The Chick.
- Teen Genius
Reika Chang
(Vision) Played by: Maiko Hashimoto (Japanese), Mindi L. Lyons (English), Pascale Chemin (French), Beatrice Margiotti (Italian)
- Battle Butler: Kou
- Dead Little Sister: Irene, from OAV 2, Born to Kill.
- Idol Singer
- Orphan's Plot Trinket: Irene's engagement ring, which was given to her by Linna.
- Rich Bitch: She's as spoiled as rotten meat!
- Triad Princess
- What Could Have Been: Reika was supposed to be Priss's replacement, after the latter was originally going to be killed off at the end of OAV 6. Her song, "Say Yes!", alludes to Priss's supposed death, and a movie playing in the background of OAV 8 shows her in what would have been her Knight Sabers uniform.
- You Killed My Sister: Irene's death drove Reika to the path of revenge.
Lisa Vanette
Played by: Aya Hisakawa (Japanese), Amy Parrish (English), Pascale Chemin (French)
- Action Girl: Played with - she's willing to go out on a ledge to get the perfect shot, but she gets upset when accidentally routed to a quick confrontation with a combat boomer.
- Intrepid Photojournalist: although Nene thinks she's one of the Paparazzi. OAV 8 ends up with Lisa becoming Nene's Secret Keeper.
