A Very Potter Musical/YMMV
A Very Potter Musical
- Accidental Innuendo: The entire "He is your pawn and you are his queen," line considering Quirrell and Voldemort's extremely Ho Yay-y relationship. Word of God says it's supposed to be a chess joke.
- Alternate Character Interpretation: Just about every character is played differently from the original series, which is of course done for laughs (and used brilliantly).
- Harry and Ron are now jerks and Harry has a huge ego. But they learn.
- Hermione can't draw, and on a scale of 1 to 10, she's an 8. Or maybe 9. Make it 9.5. Not more than 9.8 though...
- Voldemort and Quirrell are only Affably Evil plus have major Ho Yay
- Dumbledore is an openly gay Trickster Mentor who mocks his students.
- Snape is a Cloudcuckoolander.
- Umbridge is a steroid-pumped Ax Crazy bitch with a Freudian Excuse and is in love with Dumbledore.
- Cho Chang is a Southern Belle Fille Fatale white girl.
- Lucius is an over the top dancer who couldn't care less about Draco.
- Lupin is a raving homeless alcoholic who swears constantly and is obsessed with being James' best friend. He's still a competent teacher though.
- Dean Thomas is a stereotypical black kid archetype and Seamus Finnegan is now very Cockney.
- Draco. For those not in the know, he is played by a girl, wants his daddy's approval, draws "awesomely", is a complete Cloudcuckoolander, has a huge crush on Hermione (and later, Luna), flops about, rolls around on the floor and isn't toilet trained. And it's all played for laughs.
- And he's really nice now!
- And the Fandom Rejoiced: Upon learning there would be not only a sequel, but a threequel.
- Non Sequitur Scene: Snape giving Dumbledore a bomb sandwich.
- Continuity Lock Out: If you haven't read the Potter books, you'll understand about half the plot and almost none of the jokes.
- It's not quite as bad as you think: the play actually explains every single relevant plot point taken from the books, from Harry's past to the meaning of his lightning-bolt scar.
- Which is more than the movies explain.
- It is less funny, though, if you don't understand all the lampshading.
- It's not quite as bad as you think: the play actually explains every single relevant plot point taken from the books, from Harry's past to the meaning of his lightning-bolt scar.
- Crosses The Line
TwiceThree Times: What is this line of which you speak?- Ron and Hermione's kiss.
- Snape's death scene. Being bitten by a coral snake? Eh, not funny. Being bitten on the wiener by a coral snake? High-freakin'-larious.
- Quirrell's introduction: "GO HOME TERRORIST!"
- "Cho Chang! domo arigato Cho Chang!"
- Crowning Moment of Awesome: The Death Eater chorus line.
- Crowning Moment of Funny: Has its own page.
- Basically, any scene that has at least two or more characters interacting with each other.
- Crowning Moment of Heartwarming: Has its own page.
- Crowning Music of Totally Awesome: The entire damn thing.
- Ear Worm: Once again, most of the show, though "Get Back to Hogwarts" and "Granger Danger" perhaps most of all.
- Ensemble Darkhorse: Who expected Goyle and Quirrell to be two of the best characters?
- Evil Is Sexy: Voldemort is played by a handsome young man wearing only a cape, tights, and tap dancing shoes.
- Family-Unfriendly Aesop: "You know, I used to think looks weren't important. But now I think they're more important than anything."
- Fanon: According to Youtube comments, Rumbleroar is Aslan's brother. Makes sense. They're both supernatural talking lions who, apparently, reign over their continuities' afterlife.
- Fan-Preferred Couple: A very odd case as the show uses the Official Couple from Harry Potter of Harry/Ginny and Ron/Hermione, yet plays out with the creators' own preferred couple of Draco/Hermione. As a result of the show many people who normally did not like the Harry/Ginny ship (mostly Harry/Hermione shippers) have begun to like them in this canon and the (admittedly already popular) Draco/Hermione ship has expanded. But none of these couples take the prize from Voldemort/Quirrel, which has become a major fan ship since this show.
- Foe Yay: Malfoy and Hermione. The fact that Malfoy's played by a girl just makes it funnier.
- Freud Was Right:
- Harry's guitar when Ginny is singing "Harry". The audience's outbreak of laughter at the seemingly innocent scene says it all.
- Dumbledore's description of Quidditch.
- Hilarious in Hindsight: Pottermore spoiler: Quirrell apparently used to press wild flowers.
- Hollywood Homely: Hermione, intentionally Played for Laughs. She's so ugly that if Draco were to rate her on a scale of one to ten, she'd be an 8.5! 9.8 at the very most. That's why he's holding out for a ten-there's always room for improvement.
- Ho Yay: Voldemort and Quirrell. So, so much. They didn't even try to hide it. It's practically canon if you consider this video.
- There are a lot of moments even outside of Dumbledore and Snape, like Neville greeting Harry and Ron with the line, "How are you fine, strapping young gentlemen?" and Harry describing Dumbledore as "the most beautiful wizard". The play is dripping in Ho Yay, probably to make fun of the fan reaction to Rowling's post-series revelation of Dumbledore's homosexuality.
- Draco and Goyle have quite a few close moments as well.
- Snape smacks Harry on the behind before he does the first task.
- Snape: "Is that a new body, my lord? You look absolutely ravishing."
- As a meta example there is this brief announcement (wait until 2:35).
- Narm Charm: Some lines are so ridiculous, you just have to love them.
Tall Death Eater: I oughta Jelly-Legs Jinx you right now, traitor!
- Nightmare Fuel: In spades.
- The aforementioned ECM and ax-craziness.
- "Mama's Little Love Hand," a nail-studded paddle which she nearly used on Hermione.
- The Scrappy: Bellatrix, if the Youtube comments are to be believed. They might just be envious that the actress got to get... intimate with Joe Walker, the actor playing Voldemort. Die for Our Ship probably has to do with it, too, considering the Quirrelmort relationship is actually what ties the entire play together. Most people claim the reason that she is so disliked is because almost all of the Alternate Character Interpretation is done fantastically but in her case they just made a really cool character annoying. And not to mention that with Voldemort only Affably Evil, she is actually the true villain of the story. Of course, it's not fair to blame the actress and not the writing and directing. The actress actually choreographed the entire show. She also acquits herself nicely in the sequel, where she plays Dean Thomas.
A Very Potter Sequel
- Crack Pairing: Draco x Luna, who in the main series never even spoke to each other. Lupin x Cho is also teased- again, never even spoke to one another in the main series.
- Not to mention Umbridge and Dumbledore. Or Umbridge and Firenze.
- Crosses the Line Twice: Stomping Scabbers to death after they realize he's Peter Pettigrew, only for it to turn out that Pettigrew was actually hidden in the Taylor Lautner poster.
- Any of Draco's monologues about using the potty. They go from amusing to disturbingly awkward to freakin' hilarious.
- When Dumbledore rejects Umbridge and she can't stop crying it's a genuinely sad moment. Then Dumbledore assumes she's laughing, starts talking about how funny the story is, and even high fives Snape while she's still sobbing in the foreground. It is hilarious.
- Harry Freaking Potter gleefully parodies the Crowd Song chorus:
Harry: But this is all so sad, I mean my mom and dad died long ago...
Chorus: [cheerfully] Long ago they died!
- Crowning Moment of Funny: An entire page of them.
- Crowning Moment of Heartwarming: Draco's letter definitely qualifies.
- The song "Home" where Harry talks about never having a home before. It helps that the entire song is sang subdued and softly.
- The Mirror of Erised.
- Harry and Snape's (temporary) reconciliation.
- Harry's speech at the end of AVPS about how Hogwarts will always be there and you can always go back to it. I have something in my eye.
- After all the poor Draco goes through, it's nice to see him having a happy ending with Luna.
- "The Coolest Girl": an anthem for nerdgirls everywhere.
- Future!Draco finally gets to sing a 4-part harmony like he wanted in the first show.
- Crowning Moment Of Totally Awesome: At the end of "Days of Summer", the entire cast does a reprise of "Get Back to Hogwarts"!
- The choreography of the Quidditch match.
- Harry's transformation from a shy, awkward kid to the arrogant BAMF we know and love in the bridge of "Harry Freaking Potter".
- Crowning Music of Totally Awesome: The entire damn thing.
- Hermione's girl power song, "The Coolest Girl".
- "Harry Freaking Potter".
- "No Way"
- The bit of "Get Back to Hogwarts".
- "Guys Like Potter"
- "You Were Never My Lover (Stutter)"
- Draco in Leather Pants: Lucius in Leather Pants, actually. Very tight, Jareth-y pants.
- I Love You for making that reference.
- Ear Worm: In the grand AVPM tradition, nearly every song, but especially:
- "Harry Freakin' Potter"
- "Hermione can't draw, Hermione can't draw, Hermione cannot draw!"
- "Lupin can't sing, Lupin can't sing, Lupin cannot sing!"
- The Mirror of Erised song, especially Harry and Sirius's "La la la"'s.
- "Guys Like Potter"- who knew Snape could sing?
- Umbridge's "Stutter"
- "No Way"
- Ensemble Darkhorse: The Scarf of Sexual Preference. It was a one-off joke in AVPM, but he's awesome in the sequel. "Metrosexual!" indeed.
- Jim Povolo (who plays Goyle, Firenze and random Death Eaters) get a big laugh from the audience whenever he says anything. "Is that crosshatching I detect?"
- Evil Is Sexy: Lucius Malfoy is gorgeous, and he has a gorgeous voice that wouldn't seem out of place on broadway. He also has gorgeous legs that could rival David Bowie in tights.
- Umbridge. She's probably the most hated character in the canon, and yet Joe Walker is gorgeous, even in drag.
- Funny Aneurysm Moment: They make a joking reference to Gary Coleman at one point. Between the show's premiere and its posting on YouTube, Coleman passed away.
- Hilarious in Hindsight: Yaxley as a snivelling coward is made really funny by Peter Mullan's badass take on the character in the first Deathly Hallows film.
- Ho Yay: Absolutely everywhere.
- Harry and Ron are closer than usual, having been sorted as "Metrosexual" and "Bi-curious".
Ron: Want to hold hands?
Harry: I'd love that!
- They even give each other a kiss on the cheek.
- For a song about Snape's love for Lily, Lucius and Snape are really rather close during "Guys Like Potter".
- Some slight Remus/Sirius ( "It feels so good to hug and kiss you again", which is a very popular slash pairing from the original books.
- Slight?! There's that very obvious kiss.
- In Name Only: Aside from the Lucius plot and Future!Draco in Act 2, the show is not so much a sequel as a prequel. The only plot that continues onto the sequel because of this is Draco's crush on Hermione.
- Lampshaded in the first scene of the first act, with Lucius saying "There is literally no way to move forward from this point!"
- Jerkass Woobie: Draco and Snape. Even Umbridge has her moment, after Dumbledore dumps her.
- Memetic Mutation: IMA SUCK YOU INTO MY WOMB. AND SPIT YOU OUT AS A RED HOT TITANIUM BABY. WITH DIAMOND TEETH!!
- Never Live It Down: Draco wears diapers! Hermione can't draw! Lupin ate shit!
- Nightmare Fuel: The scene with Mama Umbridge. Dear god.
- Heck, every scene with Umbridge qualifies.
- Agreed, but I think this one deserves special mention:
- Heck, every scene with Umbridge qualifies.
Harry: I'm not afraid of you! You're a teacher, you can't hurt me. *scoffs* Do your worst.
Umbridge: *turns around slowly* Oh, I will. *CRACK* See you in hell, Harry Potter.
- One-Scene Wonder: He's only there for about two seconds, but at the very end, Voldemort pops out through the Zefron poster.
- Umbridge's mama.
- Squick: Lupin accidentally eating a shit flavored candy bean.
- Draco's drawing of himself on the potty. Let's just say that you can see his "Little D".
- Tear Jerker: Anything with Snape and Lily.
- "Guys Like Potter" manages to be incredibly sad despite the use of the word "pwned" and lines like "so many assholes in my face."
- Sirius and Harry both seeing James and Lily in the mirror of Erised.
- And, at the end of that scene, Snape turning back for a couple of seconds and seeing Lily on her own before the lights fade.
- At the beginning of "Those Voices", right when Harry sings "I know you..." That by itself is enough to turn on the waterworks, but immediately after that you can just barely hear a hushed gasp from someone in the audience, which makes the moment even more effective.
- What Do You Mean It's Not for Kids?: Even less for kids than the later installments of the original series. Once they put it on the Internet and opened it up for all ages, they cut out some of the dirtier portions.
- The Woobie: Lavender Brown cries when he's scared, so she might qualify.
- Draco, who just wants his dad to be proud of him and to use the potty. It doesn't help that Lauren Lopez has some of the saddest puppy-eyes this side of anime.
- Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Umbridge is still a Complete Monster, but since she actually gets character development here (as opposed to being more evil than Satan in the books and movies) manages to evoke a few "aw's" and "ohs" from the audience when her backstory is revealed.
