Gameplay and development

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is an action role-playing game played from a third-person perspective, similar to Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana. Alongside series protagonist Adol Christin, players control multiple other characters, each with their own play styles. The player collects a variety of weapons and items by defeating enemies and opening chests.

The game was developed by Nihon Falcom and released on the PlayStation 4 in Japan on September 26, 2019.[2][3] It will be released in North America and Europe by NIS America in 2021, additionally releasing for Microsoft Windows and Nintendo Switch.[4]

Reception

Japanese magazine Famitsu scored the PlayStation 4 version a 35 out of 40.[5] Yūsuke Takahashi, writer from Japanese website 4gamer.net, recommended Ys IX for players who enjoy exploration, while "the feeling of exploring fields and dungeons makes you feel different from western open-world action games". He also remarked upon the game's difficulty as being well-balanced.[6]

The PlayStation 4 version sold 45,000 copies during launch week in Japan.[7]
