When the Sweet Turns Sour

When the Sweet Turns Sour is a compilation album by the progressive rock band echolyn. The title is play on the title of an early Genesis song called "Where the Sour Turns to Sweet", of which a cover version is included on this album, alluding to the sentiment surrounding echolyn's breakup in late 1995/early 1996. The album is composed of demo quality studio tracks, remakes, covers and live tracks. The studio tracks were recorded during the fallout of the band being dropped by Sony 550 Records. Though tensions were high, the band was able to record the studio tracks before the departure of bassist Tom Hyatt and keyboardist Chris Buzby.

"Meaning and the Moment" is a re-recording of a song from their self-titled debut album. "When the Sour Turns to Sweet" was intended to be included on the Magna Carta Genesis tribute album, "Supper's Ready" (1995), but Sony prohibited the song from being used. The two live tracks were recorded at ProgDay '95 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

From the album tray card:

"This CD contains demo version of unreleased songs and two live cuts from our last show, September 3, 1995, which was performed in North Carolina. To us a 'demo' was used to feel out the instrumentation and then to work out the vocals without having to actually play the song live over and over again. This sometimes created a problem later on, but it did give us a 'recorded' point of view while we tried to eliminate the bugs. These songs, with the exceptions of the live tracks, don't have the bugs worked out, and since they never will... well, this is how they sound."
