Background

On April 23, 2019, the original solo version of the song was released as a single from Pop Smoke's debut mixtape Meet the Woo.[5]

Remixes

After gaining popularity, the song was remixed by rappers ASAP Ferg, Pusha T, Rico Nasty, Kiing Shooter, Dave East and Meek Mill.[6][7] On July 14, Pop Smoke teased the official remix of "Welcome to the Party" with Nicki Minaj, at his album release party.[8][9] The official remix was released on August 15. A remix with British rapper Skepta was also released.[10]

Composition

The song has been labelled "chaotic"[3] and features "sinister and violent" lyrics, with Pop Smoke's voice singled out for being "preposterously"[3] and "hauntingly" deep.[4] Complex magazine's Jessica McKinney called the song "distinctly Brooklyn", due to Pop Smoke's thick accent and a drill beat from producer 808Melo,[3] which Pitchfork noted as being "haphazard and bass-heavy".[4]
