UIET is an autonomous institute of the Kanpur University (officially known as CSJM University, with its premises within the university campus. With an initial strength of 240 students, it now has 2200 students on its rolls in the six disciplines of Engineering and other career-oriented programs like MCA, BCA, M.Sc. (Electronics), M.Sc. (Bioinformatics) and Advanced PG Diploma in Bioinformatics and Bachelor of Fashion Technology. It is a self-financed institute.[1]

The University Institute of Engineering & Technology (UIET) was founded with a vision to serve the country in the 21st century by offering its students advanced knowledge in Engineering and Technology, Science and other areas of scholarship. The intellectual stimulation that is provided to each member of University Institute of Engineering and Technology community generates a passion in him/her to work wisely, creatively and effectively for the national development. Spreading over a campus of 254 acres, the university is booming with academic activities. For catering to the needs of young engineering aspirants, the university has started an Institute of Engineering and Technology in the campus offering courses in six branches of engineering viz. Chemical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering,and Material Science & Metallurgical Engineering in the first instance. The university seeks to contribute to student an education through curriculum design, the development of new courses and the application of a forward looking and innovative teaching methodology. The UIET is a brainchild of its founder Prof. S.S. Katiyar, the former Vice Chancellor of Kanpur University.

It is set amidst the university campus that has an area of about 265 acres. It is one of the constituent institutes of the university. It was founded in 1996 with an initial strength of 240 students, and now more than 2200 students on its rolls in all the six disciplines of engineering and other career-oriented programs like MCA, BCA, M.Sc. (Electronics), M.Sc. (Bioinformatics),B.Tech and Advanced PG Diploma in Bioinformatics. It is a self-financed institute in Engineering and Technology as well as Sciences. [2]

Academics

The institute offers standard four year Indian Bachelor's degree, Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) courses in fields as Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Information Technology, Materials science and Metallurgical engineering. 3-years Bachelor of Computer Application. Postgraduate courses include Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Electronics and Bioinformatics,3-years Master of Computer Applications, diploma studies and Master of Philosophy in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
