Thembinkosi Apleni

Thembinkosi Tevin Apleni is a South African politician. Since 2019 he has been serving as a permanent delegate of the National Council of Provinces. He is one of six permanent delegates from the Eastern Cape. Apleni is a member of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the party's deputy provincial chairperson. He was previously the party's provincial secretary.

Life and career

Apleni matriculated and soon achieved a diploma in paralegal studies. He joined the EFF after its inception and was appointed the party's provincial secretary in the Eastern Cape in 2015.[1] In the 2016 South African municipal elections, Apleni was elected to the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, centred around the provincial capital of Bhisho and the city of East London, as one of the EFF's proportional representation councillors.[2] The first few months of Apleni's councillor term were marked by the ejection of the EFF caucus from council over a dress code dispute.[3][4]

In October 2018, Apleni was elected the EFF's deputy provincial chairperson.[5]

Parliamentary career

On 23 May 2019, Apleni became a member of the National Council of Provinces for the Eastern Cape. He is one of nine permanent EFF representatives in the legislature.[6] On 24 June, he received his committee assignments.
