Sundaram Natarajan

Dr. Sundaram Natarajan, Padmashree Awardee (one of the highest civilian Award by the President of India), is an ophthalmologist who has dedicated his life for bringing back the light in the eyes. In 2002, he started a free clinic in Dharavi, which is the largest slum area in Mumbai, and treated more than 8000 people. He has also held free camps in various other suburbs of Mumbai like Mankhurd and Govandi, treating the economically poor. In 2013, he was awarded with Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour.[1] In 2016, he also held camp in Kashmir region to operate and cure the victims of pellet gun firings.[2][3][4] As of January 2019,he heads the Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital, Wadala, Mumbai.[5]

Educational qualification

Dr. S Natarajan graduated from the Madras Medical College, Madras, in 1980. He did his Diploma in Ophthalmology (D.O) at University of Madras in 1984 and Fellowship in Retina and Vitreous Surgery (F.R.V.S) at Sankara Nethralaya in 1985. He has completed Fellow of All India Collegium of Ophthalmology (FAICO) in 2012, Fellow Of Royal College Of Physicians And Surgeons, Glasgow (FRCS) in 2018 and Fellow of European Latino American Society of Ophthalmology (FELAS) in 2019.[6][7]

  2. Guinness World Record - With a maximum number of Diabetic eye screenings, i.e.; 649 Diabetes patients were screened in Dharavi, Mumbai in 8 hours
  3. Retina Hall of Fame - “Charter Inductee” One of the two Indians listed in 2017[8]
  4. State Award for Meritorious Service - By the Government of Jammu & Kashmir, for creating a record for performing 47 VR surgeries in 2 1’2 days in J&K
  5. Limca Book of Records – National Record - Performed the first completely sutureless sclera buckling as well as a sutureless 23G vitrectomy.
