Russian submarine Kazan (K-561)

K-561 Kazan is a Yasen class nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine of the Russian Navy. It is the second boat of the project, separated from the first by 16 years (1993–2009). Considerable changes were made to the initial design.[1] Differences in the project have appeared sufficient to consider it as a new upgraded version Yasen-M (Russian: Ясень-М).[2] The submarine is named after the city of Kazan.

History

The submarine project was developed in the Malachite Design Bureau in Saint Petersburg. The Russian navy declared that the submarine will be improved in comparison to Severodvinsk, the first of the class.[1][3] Compared to the first-of-class, Kazan will reportedly have two more VLS silos (10, compared to 8 on Severodvinsk), 2 fewer torpedo tubes (8, compared to 10 on Severodvinsk) and a pump-jet propulsor.[4] Based on released photographs, the submarine appears to retain a conventional propeller[5] as opposed to U.S. Virginia-class submarines which are equipped with a pump-jet propulsor.[6]

Kazan's first crew had been formed in March 2016,[7] and the submarine was originally to be commissioned in 2017.[8][9] On 23 August 2016, the Sevmash shipyard reported that the submarine would be delivered to the Russian Navy in 2018.[10]

On 31 March 2017, Kazan was rolled out of the construction hall and subsequently launched on the water.[11][12][13][5] It has began its sea trials on 24 September 2018 and is expected to join the Russian Navy in 2019.[14] In October 2019, President of the United Shipbuilding Corporation Alexei Rakhmanov, stated that Kazan's deployment is delayed until the end of 2020 due to technical issues with its complex control systems.[15] Following TASS report has specified the commissioning period as "September-October" 2020.[16]

In mass culture

SSGN Kazan features prominently in the Kirov novel series by John Schettler. At the end of the first season, the modern submarine battles a US task force near the Kuril Islands and then hunts down rebellious captain Karpov on board the battlecruiser Kirov. Its fictional Captain Ivan Gromyko, the Matador, appears throughout the series, with significant action in the final season covering the outbreak of WWIII in 2021.
