Rhynchoedura

Rhynchoedura, also known as the beaked geckos, is a genus of lizards in the family Diplodactylidae endemic to Australia. It includes six species:[1]

Rhynchoedura
Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Reptilia
Order: Squamata
Family: Diplodactylidae
Genus: Rhynchoedura
Günther, 1867

The genus was regarded as monotypic, a single species named as Rhynchoedura ornata by Albert Günther in 1867. A second species was described in 1985, without widespread recognition, and in 2011 an extensive revision sampling the population across Australia found cryptic species and named four new taxa.[2]

  • Rhynchoedura angusta Pepper, Doughty, Hutchinson, & Keough, 2011 (border beaked gecko)
  • Rhynchoedura eyrensis Pepper, Doughty, Hutchinson, & Keough, 2011 (Eyre Basin beaked gecko)
  • Rhynchoedura mentalis Pepper, Doughty, Hutchinson, & Keough, 2011 (Brigalow beaked gecko)
  • Rhynchoedura ormsbyi Wells & Wellington, 1985 (eastern beaked gecko)
  • Rhynchoedura ornata Günther, 1867 (western beaked gecko)
  • Rhynchoedura sexapora Pepper, Doughty, Hutchinson, & Keough, 2011 (northern beaked gecko)
