Patrick Bailey (baseball)

Patrick Bailey (born May 29, 1999) is an American professional baseball catcher in the San Francisco Giants organization. Bailey was selected 13th overall by the Giants in the first round of the 2020 Major League Baseball draft.[1][2]

Career

Bailey attended Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point, North Carolina, where he played baseball.[3] In 2016, he was selected for the U-18 United States national baseball team.[4] In 2017, his senior year, he batted .510 with five home runs and 33 RBIs.[5] He was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 37th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft, but did not sign and instead chose to fulfill his commitment to play college baseball at North Carolina State University.[6]

In 2018, Bailey's freshman year at NC State, he slashed .321/.419/.604 with 13 home runs (a NC State freshman record)[7] and 40 RBIs, earning ACC Freshman of the Year honors[8] alongside being named a Freshman-All American and to the All-ACC Second Team.[9] After the 2018 season, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Yarmouth–Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod Baseball League.[10] Also, he was selected for United States collegiate national team.[4]

As a sophomore at NC State in 2019, Bailey batted .288 with 10 home runs alongside a .989 fielding percentage.[11] That summer, he played for the United States collegiate national team again.[12][13][4]

Bailey entered his junior year in 2020 as a top prospect for the 2020 Major League Baseball draft.[14][15] He hit six home runs and compiled 20 RBIs over 17 games before the college baseball season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was selected by the San Francisco Giants 13th overall, in the first round.[16] Bailey signed with the Giants on July 1, 2020 for a bonus of $3.8M.
