Ofoten District Court

Ofoten District Court (Norwegian: Ofoten tingrett) is a district court located in the town of Narvik in Nordland county, Norway. The court serves the northeastern part of the Nordland county and a small part of south-central Troms county. It includes the municipalities of Ballangen, Evenes, Gratangen, Hamarøy, Lavangen, Lødingen, Narvik, Salangen, Tjeldsund, and Tysfjord. The court is subordinate to the Hålogaland Court of Appeal. The court is led by the chief judge (Sorenskriver) Arne Eirik Kirkerud.[1] The judicial staff consists of one chief judge, two appointed professional judges, and one deputy judge. The chief judge is the president of the district court. He administrates the staff and appoints deputy judges for a period of up to three years. The judges divide their time approximately equally between criminal cases and civil cases.[2]

The court is a court of first instance. Its judicial duties are mainly to settle criminal cases and to resolve civil litigation as well as bankruptcy. The administration and registration tasks of the court include death registration, issuing certain certificates, performing duties of a notary public, and officiating civil wedding ceremonies. Cases from this court are heard by a combination of professional judges and lay judges. Cases from this district court may be appealed to the Hålogaland Court of Appeal.[3]
