Nolan D. Archibald

Nolan D. Archibald (born 1943) is the retired chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of the Black & Decker Corporation. Following the merger with Stanley Works, Archibald became executive chairman of the board of Stanley Black & Decker, Inc.

Early life, education and athletics

Nolan was one of the most recruited players in the nation after becoming a junior college All-American basketball player at Dixie Junior College. He was recruited by over 50 major universities including Arizona, Oklahoma State, and all three major Utah Universities after leading Dixie to the National Junior Finals Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas. He chose to play in his hometown at Weber State University, then coached by Dick Motta and Phil Johnson. Nolan led Weber State in scoring his junior year and led the team in field goal percentage in both his junior and senior years. He led Weber State to a Big Sky Title his senior year and its first appearance in the NCCA tournament when there were only 32 teams that participated. He was named by United Press International (UPI) first team Big Sky All-Conference basketball player. Nolan was one of 15 Division I basketball players out of 4,000 named an Academic-All American. He was named Weber State Scholar Athlete of the Year in 1968. He graduated Cum Laude from Weber State in 1968. He has been inducted into Weber State’s Hall of Fame.

Nolan was invited to the Chicago Bulls Rookie Camp in both 1969 and 1970. He was offered a contract to play professional basketball for the Pittsburgh Pipers in the American Basketball Association in 1970. In 1993, the National Association of Basketball Coaches honored Nolan, along with four other All-American basketball players (including NBA Hall of Famer Elvin Hayes) as their “Silver Anniversary NCAA All-American Basketball Team.” Nolan is the only athlete in Weber State history to receive this honor.

Following graduation from Weber State, Nolan graduated from the Harvard Business School with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration in 1970.

Business Career

Stanley Black & Decker, Inc. is a $14 billion global corporation, marketing its products in over 100 countries. In addition to Black & Decker and Stanley, the company markets its products under the well-known brand names of DeWalt Professional and Industrial Power and Hand Tools, Craftsman, Irwin, Lenox, Bostitch, Porter Cable, Mac Tools, and Facom.

Nolan joined Black & Decker as President & Chief Operating Officer in September 1985. When appointed President & Chief Executive Officer in March 1986 at the age of 42, Nolan was the youngest CEO of a Fortune 500 Company. He served as Chief Executive Officer for Black & Decker for 24 years. At the time of the merger with Stanley in March 2010, Nolan was the second longest serving CEO of the largest 1,000 companies in the United States that were not family controlled.

Nolan launched DeWalt in 1992 and built what is now the world’s largest professional and industrial power tools brand. He is a recipient of the American Marketing Association’s Edison Achievement Award for significant and lasting contributions to marketing excellence and product innovation. He has been cited by Business Week as one of the top six managers in the United States and by Fortune Magazine as one of the country’s “ten most wanted” executives.

Currently he serves as Lead Director on the Huntsman Corporation’s Board of Directors. He also serves on the Board of the NCAA National Association of Basketball Coaches, the BYU Presidents Leadership Council and the Marriott National Advisory Council. He served as a member of the Board of Brunswick Corporation for 24 years, and as a member of the Lockheed Martin Corporation’s Board of Directors for 17 years. He recently served as Lead Director on the Lockheed Martin Corporation’s Board of Directors. Other past board memberships include: ITT Corporation, the Johns Hopkins University Board of Trustees, and the Board of Directors of the Associates of the Harvard Business School.

In 1996 Nolan Archibald was honored with an Edison Achievement Award for his commitment to innovation throughout his career.

Personal life

Nolan and his wife Margaret (Hafen) have seven sons and one daughter: Jason, Lance, Jared, Jordan, Anthony, Cameron, Austin, and Ashley. Seven graduated from Brigham Young University. Jared graduated from Harvard University and received an MBA from Stanford University. Following BYU, Jason graduated from Duke Medical School and the five-year Johns Hopkins University Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program. The five other sons earned their MBA’s from the Harvard Business School. All sons were Eagle Scouts and served missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Nolan and Margaret also have 32 grandchildren.
