Mountain Eagle Commando Unit

The Mountain Eagle Commando Unit is a police tactical unit of the People's Republic of China under the People's Armed Police, tasked with counter-terrorism, riot control, and other special tasks such as anti-hijacking and bomb disposal in Xinjiang Autonomous Region.[2] It is the third unit dedicated to counterterrorism operations after the Snow Leopard Unit and the Falcon Unit to be raised.[3][4]

The unit was publicly shown to the media on 20 August 2019.[2][5] Its name is derived from its designated operational areas, consisting of mountains and plateaus.[1]

Mission

The Mountain Eagle Commando has been formed under the 2017-2018 People's Armed Police reform and is tasked to deal with counter-terror missions in Xinjiang.[2] The unit is specially trained in order to conduct operations on horseback to deal with terrain difficult for vehicles.[5]

According to the People's Liberation Army Daily, the unit has an intense operational history.[2]
