Mito Station (Ibaraki)

Mito Station (水戸駅, Mito-eki) is a railway station in Mito, Ibaraki, Japan, operated by the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) and Kashima Rinkai Tetsudo.[1]

Overview

This station is a representative station in Mito City and Ibaraki Prefecture, and is the closest station to Kairakuen, Ibaraki Prefectural History Museum, Kodokan and Lake Senba.

Lines

Mito Station is served by the JR East Jōban Line and Suigun Line, and also by the Kashima Rinkai Tetsudo Ōarai-Kashima Line. It is located 115.3 km from the official starting point of the Jōban Line at Nippori Station and is a terminus of the Suigun Line and of the Kashima Rinkai Tetsudo Ōarai-Kashima Line.

The station consists of four island platforms serving eight tracks.

The station has a Midori no Madoguchi staffed ticket office and a "View Plaza" travel agency.[1]

Transportation characteristics at the station edit

• This station is a representative station in Ibaraki Prefecture, and trains from all directions inside and outside the prefecture gather at this station. As mentioned above (the section on the service route), this station is a boundary station for operation, and most local trains are separated from this station or the Katsuta station on the north (only for arrivals and departures for Ueno).
• JR Joban Line up (for Tomobe , Ishioka,

Tsuchiura , Toride & Ueno)

• During the day, approximately two regular trains and two limited express trains stop every hour. In the morning and evening, trains directly on the Mito Line (for Kasama, Shimodate and oyama) are also added.
• JR Joban Line going down (for Katsuta, Hitachi, Takahagi , Isohara & Iwaki)
• During the day, approximately two regular trains bound for Takahagi depart and arrive at the station every hour. In addition, as mentioned above, about 1 to 2 Katsuda lines arrive and depart approximately every hour. Therefore, the number of trains between this station and Katsuta station is larger than other sections.
• Limited express trains stop at two true stations an hour.

• JR Suigun Line (for Kami-Sugaya , Hitachi-Ōmiya , Saigane , Hitachi-Daigo & Kōriyama / Hitachi-Ōta)
• During the day, destinations vary, but approximately one regular train leaves the station every hour.
• Kashima Rinkai Railway Ōarai Kashima Line (for Ōarai, Shin-Hokota & Kashima-Jingu)
• During the day, two regular trains depart for one hour (one for Kashima Jingu and one for Oarai), and in the evening there are also trains for Shinhokota.

History

Mito station opened on the Mito Line on 16 January 1889.[2] The Suigun Line opened on 16 November 1897. The station was absorbed into the JR East network upon the privatization of the Japanese National Railways (JNR) on 1 April 1987. A new station building was completed in July 1994.

The Kashima Rinkai Tetsudo Ōarai-Kashima Line opened on 14 March 1985.
