It was established in 1972 as the Ecole des Sociétés Françaises and grew out of an initiative of the Société des Pétroles. In 1982, the school was renamed in honour of Louis Massignon, a noted French scholar of Islam. From 1992, it has been managed by the Agence pour l’Enseignement Français à l’Etranger (AEFE), the agency within the French Foreign Ministry charged with overseeing French language education abroad.

The Lycee's structure and curriculum are based on the French educational system. It comprises the "Primaire" (essentially kindergarten ("Petite section") through fifth grade ("Cours moyen deuxième année" or "CM2")), the Collège and the Lycée, essentially sixth grade ("Sixieme") through twelfth grade ("Terminale" or "Tle").

LLM is a unique international school because it offers the opportunity to study four languages. In addition to French, which is the language of instruction, Arabic and English are also taught from the age of three. In middle school students then choose either German or Spanish.

LLM welcomes students and parents from forty countries. French nationals make up half the school’s population, 5% are Emiratis and the remaining 45% are other nationals.

LLM fosters educational values which include ethics, dignity and diversity (je préfère - mais je n’ai pas vu la version française) (respect, lack of violence and a demanding yet compassionate teaching approach). It upholds the principle of coeducation and develops students’ critical thinking skills to make them become active, well-informed and enlightened citizens.

LLM prides itself in its quest for academic excellence: the French system is renowned for its rigorous mathematical and scientific approach to learning and its study of social and cognitive sciences.

Like the IB, the French baccalaureate opens the doors to the world. Many of our students go to French universities, but others, thanks to their excellent command of English, apply to North American, Middle Eastern and other European universities.

The French baccalaureate is also recognized by the Ministry of Education in the UAE which gives our students access to the best universities here.

LLM is rated Very Good by ADEK.

The network of French schools overseas provides continuity in 500 schools in 138 countries.

LLM offers extra-curricular sporting and cultural activities.

LLM welcomes non-French-speaking pupils in primary school and offers customized French as a foreign language lessons to help them master the language.

Most school work is done in class with the primary school teachers which means little homework is given. Parents can follow their children’s progress and achievements online.
