Background

After teasing music on her social media from 2018 onward in anticipation for her upcoming third studio album, Foxes revealed on 15 May 2020, new music would be released by sharing new videos on social media of her asking questions, "How did you have to let them go?", "What does your heart desire?", "When was the last time you danced like you meant it?". The teasers came along with a phone number which if you phoned would let people answer the questions.[2][3][4]

On 18 May 2020, it was announced that the title of the lead single of her third studio album would be called "Love Not Loving You" and that it would be released on 20 May 2020.[5][6] This would ultimately be Foxes' first single released under her new record label, PIAS Recordings.[7]

Composition

Foxes spoke about the meaning of the song stating; "This song is about finally falling in love with myself, about not depending on anyone else for my own happiness, and being able to stand on my own two feet. I hope the message in this song can inspire others to do the same”.[7]
