Fruits Basket was adapted into a twenty-six episode anime series by Studio Deen and premiered in Japan on TV Tokyo on July 5, 2001, with the final episode airing on December 27, 2001. Based on the twenty-three volume manga series written by Natsuki Takaya, the series tells the story of Tohru Honda, an orphan girl living in a tent so as not to trouble anyone. After meeting Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure Sohma (who later ask her to do their housework in exchange for a room to stay in), she learns thirteen members of the Sohma family are possessed by the animals of the Chinese zodiac legend and cursed to turn into their animal forms if they embrace anyone of the opposite sex or if their bodies are under great stress. The series was directed by Akitaro Daichi. During production of the series, Daichi and Takaya ran into multiple creative differences including the cast, coloring, and storytelling direction, leading Takaya to dislike the adaptation.[1] FUNimation aired the series, in dubbed English, on their anime television channel as well as on Colours TV.
FUNimation's release of the Fruits Basket complete series
Fruits Basket was released to DVD in nine individual volumes by King Records on a monthly schedule from 29 September 2001 through 22 May 2002, with a series box set released on 25 April 2007. The series is licensed for Region 1 and Region 2 release by FUNimation Entertainment, which released it as four individual DVD volumes containing 6-7 episodes and as a complete series box set. As part of their release, FUNimation renamed all of the episodes, which originally had simple names of "First story", "Second story", etc. On 20 November 2007, FUNimation re-released the series as part of their lower priced Viridian line, with the new release containing the complete series in a thin-packed box set. The Region 2 United Kingdom releases were done through a sub-licensing agreement with Revelation Films. The series was released in Region 4 by Madman Entertainment as a series box set.
The series uses three pieces of theme music, all performed by Ritsuko Okazaki. "For Fruits Basket" (For フルーツバスケット, For Furūtsu Basuketto) is used for the opening theme for all twenty-six episodes. "Chiisana Inori" (小さな祈り, lit. Small Prayer) is used for the series ending theme, except for episode twenty-five, which uses the song "Serenade" (セレナーデ, Serenēde). In the English version, the theme songs were rewritten and redubbed with the English voice actresses Meredith McCoy performing the opening theme, Laura Bailey performing the 1st ending theme and Daphne Gere performing the 2nd ending theme.
In early 2019, a remake of Fruits Basket was announced, titled "Fruits Basket: 1st Season." The first season aired from April 6 to September 21, 2019. The first opening theme is “Again” performed by Beverly, while the first ending theme "Lucky Ending" is sung by Vickeblanka. The second opening theme is "Chime" by Ai Otsuka, and the second ending theme is "One Step Closer" by Intersection. The first season ran for 25 episodes.
The second season premiered on April 7, 2020. The first opening theme of the second season is "Prism" performed by AmPm (featuring Miyuna), while the first ending theme is "ad meliora" is performed by THE CHARM PARK. The second opening theme is "Home" by Toki Asako, and the second ending theme is "Eden" by Monkey Majik.

| Tohru Honda, a high school girl, is introduced to Yuki and Shigure Sohma, as she passes by a house with little figurines of the Chinese zodiac laid out on the front porch. Since her mother, Kyoko Honda, recently died in a car accident and her father, Katsuya Honda, died when she was young, she subsequently moved in with her grandfather. However, due to her grandfather's house needing renovation, she takes to living in a tent on Sohma land, but doesn't realize the property belongs to anyone. After Yuki and Shigure become aware of this one night, they invite her into their home and later reach an agreement where Tohru works as a housekeeper in return for room and board. Not long after, Kyo Sohma crashes through the roof of her new room to challenge Yuki to a fight. However, Tohru, in an attempt to stop the fight from happening, accidentally embraces each of them. She finds out that Kyo, Yuki, and Shigure turn into a Cat, a Rat, and a Dog, respectively | ||||

| Tohru discovers the Sohma family secret; thirteen members of the Sohma family are possessed by the vengeful spirits of the animals of the Chinese zodiac, and they transform into said animals if embraced by the opposite gender. Later, Yuki talks to Tohru concerning the family secret, and he warns that her memories of the family secret and there having even met might be erased. Meanwhile, Shigure visits Akito Sohma, the head of the Sohma family, who decides to entrust Tohru with the Sohma secret. | Yuki confronts Kyo about his anti-social behavior during his first day of school. Kyo reveals that while Yuki may want nothing more than to escape the Sohmas, he himself only wants to be accepted as a real member of the family. Tohru stops the two of them fighting by accidentally hugging Kyo, who yells at her in anger. Later on, Kyo meets Tohru in the forest on her way home to apologize for all the trouble he caused. Tohru forgives him, and the two reconcile. The next day, Yuki picks her up from work and she accidentally makes him transform into a rat. Yuki reverts back to human form, and in an attempt to save his plants from the rain, takes Tohru to his secret garden where they try their best to cover the vegetables. Yuki confesses that he is only kind so others will like him, and admits that he is not as charming and polite as he appears. | After hearing he was living with Shigure, Kagura Sohma, the Boar of the Chinese zodiac, pays Kyo a visit, much to his chagrin. Tohru is surprised to discover that Kagura is actually older than them, despite her appearance. Kagura is madly in love with Kyo, but is clumsy and ill-mannered, and causes much upheaval and destruction in the household. At first Kagura is envious of Tohru, due to her living situation with Kyo, but she ends up befriending Tohru after getting to know Tohru's gentle kindness before departing at the end of the episode. | ||||

| Tohru finally goes back to living with her paternal grandfather, as his house renovations are complete. However, this turns out to be harder for Tohru than she thought, and leaves the Sohma family despondent. Joining Tohru in her grandfather's house are her paternal relatives, who view her more as a burden than a blessing. After a series of situations in which they are shown to be verbally abusive, Tohru's grandfather urges her to go where she would be happier. Yuki and Kyo arrive hoping to bring her back home as she confesses that she is more satisfied living with the Sohma family. They all return to their house to meet up with Shigure. | Tohru invites her friends, Arisa Uotani and Saki Hanajima, to the Sohma household residence. Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure worry about what will happen if Arisa and Saki discover the Sohma family secret. The three struggle as they try to get acquainted with the girls while hiding their nervousness. Over the course of the visit, the boys have numerous encounters making contact with the girls, thereby transforming into their animal forms. Arisa and Saki, unaware of their transformations, become very suspicious, and Tohru gets increasingly nervous after each close call. Arisa and Saki soon realize that Tohru belongs in the Sohma household residence, after seeing how the Sohma family admires her, and depart none the wiser. | ||||

| The high school is planning cultural festival, blueprinting a creative idea regarding rice balls. The class picks Yuki's hit-or-miss method over Kyo's all-or-nothing plan. Tohru realizes that Yuki and Kyo admire each other, comparing them to rice balls with pickled plums on their backs. During the cultural festival, Yuki is asked to wear a dress, much to his humiliation. Soon thereafter, Momiji Sohma and Hatori Sohma, the Rabbit and Dragon of the Chinese zodiac respectively, pay a visit. Tohru learns from Hatori that Yuki has asthma, though it is steadily becoming less severe. Momiji insists on hugging Tohru and transforms into a rabbit, causing complications for everyone. Yuki warns Tohru to not be alone with Hatori, as he is the Sohma who erases memories. Hatori soon privately enjoins her to visit the Sohma main residence alone, although Momiji insists he will be there with her as well, after which Tohru becomes worried that her memories may be erased. | ||||

| Tohru is amazed at the grandeur of the Sohma main residence. Hatori calls for her in his room, where she is told more about the Sohma family secret. Later, Momiji tells Tohru about Hatori's past. It is revealed that he was involved with Kana Sohma, and that his left eye was injured by Akito because of it. This trauma caused Kana to fall into a deep depression as she blamed herself for Hatori's injury, so he erased her memories of their love to end her suffering. As it begins to snow, Hatori notices how strongly Tohru resembles Kana. Tohru accidentally slips off the front porch of the room, Hatori embraces her to break her fall, and turns into a seahorse, rather than a dragon. Once he reverts back, after drying off, Shigure turns up with Momiji and hot drinks. On the way home, Tohru catches a glimpse of Akito but does not formally meet him. | ||||

| While Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo, along with Arisa and Saki, help spruce up the Sohma household residence for New Year's Day, Shigure is harassed by his editor, Mitsuru, finish his manuscript. After Mitsuru is given the manuscript and after Arisa and Saki help clean the house, Tohru is told that the boys will be spending their New Year's Day at a banquet held in the main residence. However, Yuki and Kyo have their own excuses not to go to. Shigure convinces the two to attend the banquet, but the three are stopped by Saki, who subtly convinces Yuki and Kyo to stay with Tohru, who would otherwise be spending the day alone, while Shigure goes on to the main residence alone. Shigure informs Akito of Yuki and Kyo's absence, and Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo watch the sunrise together, making wishes for the New Year. | ||||

| Yuki comes down with a fever. Although Tohru tries to convince him to stay home, he accepts a challenge from Kyo to a contest: he must win the endurance run at school the following day. Tohru meets Hatsuharu Sohma, the Ox of the Chinese zodiac, during the endurance run. Hatsuharu has difficulty with his sense of direction and has been lost for three days while looking for Kyo. Hatsuharu intentionally trips Kyo during the challenge against Yuki because he has come to challenge Kyo to a fight. Kyo refuses at first, which triggers "Black Haru", Hatsuharu's dark side, and they begin fighting. However, as Tohru and Yuki watch the two fight, Yuki feverishly collapses. Hatsuharu clasps Tohru to transform into an ox, so he can carry Yuki back to the household residence. Later on, Hatsuharu explains to Tohru why he used to hate the clever Rat for insulting the foolish Ox. However, he further explains how he later came to forgive himself and love Yuki. | ||||

| On Valentine's Day, Tohru decides to buy chocolates for Sohma relatives that she had recently met to thank them for everything they've done for her. Meanwhile, Kyo has to deal with Kagura and refuses to eat the chocolate she bought him. After a month, the high school takes midterm exams. Shortly thereafter, Tohru decides to work overtime, but for unknown reasons. Later in the evening, Momiji comes by the household residence to invite Tohru on a trip to a hot springs resort for White Day, to which Yuki and Kyo would eventually tag along. Shigure gets a phone call from Tohru's grandfather saying that the fees for her class trip haven't been paid, and Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure then realize that she used her job money in order to buy chocolates for everyone. Kyo becomes aggravated, knowing that she could have spent all the money on herself rather than on everyone else. Momiji tells a story of a foolish traveler who seemed too generous and was always tricked. He compares the traveler to Tohru, commenting on how she gives so that everyone can be happy even if she is not. | ||||

| Tohru, Yuki, Kyo, and Momiji go to the Sohma hot springs resort. The group is startled by the hostess of the hot springs resort, who apologizes repeatedly for her actions; she eventually reveals to Tohru that her son is a member of the Chinese zodiac. Tohru becomes lightheaded when in the hot springs bath as Momiji has her sing with him, and passes out. Later on, Tohru plays ping-pong with Kyo, but she misses the ball served by him. As Yuki leaves the room, Tohru follows him, discovering that he admits he would have been ashamed to laugh in front of Kyo and Momiji. He then surprises her with a gift for White Day, two gold hair ribbons fit for a real princess. Afterwards, Tohru finds out that Momiji and Hatsuharu will be enrolled for high school the following semester, much to the surprise of Tohru, who thought Momiji was in elementary school. | ||||

| Momiji and Hatsuharu begin their first year in high school. Kyo saves Tohru from two high school boys while he helps Tohru look for Momiji and Hatsuharu. Kyo sees Momiji wearing a girls uniform, much to his chagrin, and sees Hatsuharu wearing a male uniform, much to his relief. The student council president, Takei Makoto, arrives to rant on about Momiji's outfit as well as Hatsuharu's seemingly unnatural black and white hair, however Hatsuharu defends Momiji's honor against Takei. Akito comes to the high school and introduces himself to Tohru. Yuki is terrified when he sees Akito with Tohru, assuming he threatened her, or did something else. Akito then confronts him about skipping the banquet held on New Year's Day. He threatens Yuki about his past, to when he was whipped constantly in an isolated room, which physically and mentally traumatizes Yuki. Tohru interrupts this by pushing Akito away, however feeling awful for doing it, in order to excuse Yuki to go back to class with her. Akito takes his leave soon thereafter. Tohru, Yuki, Kyo, Momiji, Hatsuharu, Arisa, and Saki all spend an afternoon playing badminton, in an attempt to cheer Yuki up. Meanwhile, Hatori philosophically mentions to Shigure that if Yuki could be hurt by Akito, then he could also be healed by Tohru. | ||||

| Ayame Sohma, the Snake of the Chinese zodiac decides to pay a visit to the household residence, supposedly to see Yuki, being his older brother. It turns out Ayame is disliked by everyone except for Shigure and Hatori, as they were his childhood playmates. Ayame later tells Tohru that he has been separated from Yuki since he was born, making it difficult to bond with him. After hearing his story, Tohru devotes herself in assisting him. However, Ayame proves to be arduous for Yuki to cope with. Ayame begins to tell stories about how he was able to keep his long hair and his experience as the student council president when he was in high school. Hatsuharu soon contacts Hatori to take Ayame back to the Sohma main residence. It is revealed that Ayame only listens to Hatori because of his admiration for him. | ||||

| Yuki, Kyo, Arisa, and Saki all come along with Tohru to visit the tombstone of Kyoko, Tohru's mother. Yuki wonders how Tohru can be content with her life after the deaths of both her mother and father. They soon have a picnic in front of the tombstone to commemorate the memory of Kyoko. Saki begins to worry about Tohru's life among the Sohma family. Later on, during work, Tohru unexpectedly meets Momiji, who explains his parents' roles within the building she works at and that he has a little sister. Momiji explains to her that his mother rejected him for being a member of the Chinese zodiac, and, as a result, requested for her memories of him to be erased. He lives apart from his family and his sister, Momo Sohma, doesn't know they are siblings. Tohru and Momiji then vow to keep their memories to be strong enough in the future to come to terms with them and be able to look back at those memories with fondness. | ||||

| Tohru, Yuki, Kyo, Shigure, and Hatori voyage to the Sohma summer house for a vacation. Yuki and Kyo decide to take a stroll with Tohru into the nearby forest. Tohru becomes worried when Kyo and Yuki are silent for unknown reasons. This causes her to lose balance and fall. Yuki and Kyo try to grab a hold of her, but they end up transforming into their animal forms trying to help break her fall. The two begin to bicker over nothing, and Tohru is relieved to see them act like their normal selves. They explain that they have started being comfortable around her and let their guard down. Later on, Shigure contacts Ayame to join the rest of the group at the summer house, much to the despair of Yuki and Kyo. Yuki and Kyo then decide to walk toward the nearby lake. Meanwhile, Ayame tells Shigure and Hatori that Kana has been recently married to someone, reminding Hatori of his times with her. Ayame again tries to bond with Yuki, but it ends in failure. Tohru accidentally turns Ayame into a Snake, and Yuki throws Ayame into the lake. | ||||

| During a downpour, Tohru and Yuki encounter Hatsuharu who introduces Tohru to the young Kisa Sohma, the Tiger of the Chinese zodiac. Kisa won't speak due to being bullied at school. Yuki feels empathy for her after he learns that Kisa ran away from her home and stopped attending middle school. Kisa's mother later arrives, worried as to why she ran away from home. Tohru responds by saying that Kisa might fear rejection by her mother if she knew about Kisa being bullied at school. It's agreed for Kisa to stay at Shigure's house until further notice. During that time, Kisa clings to Tohru, following her wherever Tohru goes. Tohru is very loving and understanding towards Kisa during this time, such as letting the little girl sleep on her lap. Tohru and Yuki meet with Momiji and Hatsuharu after school, figuring out that Kisa was bullied at her school for her hair and eye color. After Hatsuharu receives a letter from Kisa's middle school, Yuki reads it to her. Yuki and Hatsuharu encourage her to speak and later to attend school again, after they explain that one must be accepted by others before one can be accepted by oneself. | ||||

| Motoko Minagawa and the other members of the Prince Yuki fan club initiate a scheme to seemingly do an interview with Saki to better understand her psychic ability of sending and receiving electric waves. It is later revealed that the fan club plans to seek revenge, finding out the weakness of Saki in order to gain access to Tohru. The fan club is invited to the Hanajima residence and end up searching Saki's bedroom for information. They unexpectedly encounter and are introduced to Megumi Hanajima, Saki's younger brother. Megumi tells the fan club about his ability to curse people after learning their names. Saki then figures out that the fan club is only concerned as to why Tohru is spending so much time with Yuki, startling the fan club. Megumi explains that love can be a source of both pleasure and pain and must not be forced upon others. He then seemingly curses them after calling out their names, to which they quickly depart. Saki narrates revealing her weakness being Tohru, as she is always protective of Tohru. | ||||

| Due to depression and stress because of failing one test on the midterm exams, Tohru comes down with a fever and is bedridden. Even though Tohru is worried about making dinner or going to work, Kyo and Shigure tell her to get some rest until the fever lets up. Shigure calls Momiji to tell him Tohru won't be going to work today because of illness, but Momiji decides to cover her shift himself. Kyo decides to make leek soup to care for her. Shigure ridicules Kyo after he notices Kyo wearing a gas mask and goggles while cooking the leek soup. When Kyo gives the leek soup to Tohru, she later starts to cry, explaining to him that the failed test and the fever were the sources of her depression and stress. After Tohru goes to sleep, Yuki arrives, only to find out that Kyo used the leeks in Yuki's garden to make the leek soup. Momiji, Hatori, and Kisa visit the household residence to check up on Tohru. Yuki comes by to give her a study guide he constructed for her in preparation for the retest of the midterm exam, which she later takes and passes. | ||||

| After Ayame advertises about his store, Tohru and Yuki decide to pay him a visit. Once there, they are surprised to learn that it is a specialty clothing store stocked with erotic themed outfits. Mine Kuramae, Ayame's assistant explains to Yuki all the types of uniform she wears, putting him in a state of confusion. Mine later decides to dress up Tohru in a golden dress, so that Ayame can spend time bonding with Yuki. Yuki is able to make Ayame realize that they are two different people, with opposite personalities. The kindness in Yuki is what Ayame admires. Yuki gets to see a "very cute Honda-san" after Mine brings out Tohru wearing the new outfit. Yuki eventually states he must accept Ayame for who he is. | ||||

| While on her way to work, Tohru encounters Hiro Sohma, the Ram/Sheep of the Chinese zodiac. He is shown as a person who practices sophism, constantly hurling verbal insults. Hiro steals Tohru's notebook from her handbag, causing her to panic since that is where she puts her late mother's photo. Tohru, Kyo, Momiji, and Kisa all find and confront him about this deed. Returning her notebook, Hiro then admits his jealousy toward Tohru, because of how affectionate he is of Kisa. While Tohru and Kisa spend time with Hiro, Kyo becomes upset by the way Hiro is treating Tohru. It is later discovered that Hiro is fond of Kisa and wants to protect her, and that he blames himself for not defending her when she was bullied at school. Tohru takes them to a playground and they stop by a nearby vendor for crêpe. She cheers Hiro up by saying that he is courageous for being able to admit his shortcomings and for always caring for Kisa. | ||||

| The Prince Yuki fan club is curious to know if there will be any females that will be appointed to the student council, since Yuki will be the student council president the following year. However, Takei denies them access to this information. They later pass by and catch a glimpse at Tohru conversing with Yuki, which, in turn, infuriates them. Motoko must think about graduation from high school as well as her resignation from the fan club. Motoko enlists the assistance of Rika Aida in order to infiltrate the student council office. Once there, they run into Yuki. They end up talking about leeks because Mokoto gets very anxious when talking to Yuki. After she runs away toward the school grounds, Yuki finds her and apologizes for what he did or said that could have hurt her feelings. Mokoto now understands how connected Tohru and Yuki are together. | ||||

| On her way to the household residence, Tohru bumps into Ritsu Sohma, the Monkey of the Chinese zodiac. Ritsu is known for being a cross-dresser, very apologetic, and deeply depressed. As the two appear at the household residence, Ritsu gives some presents to Shigure. Ritsu decides to leave before he causes any trouble for Tohru and the others. However, Tohru wanted to serve him some tea before his departure. After Tohru accidentally breaks one of the tea glasses, Ritsu has a panic attack, thinking it was his fault. Ritsu goes to the roof of the house to commit suicide, but after Tohru convinces him not to, he nearly falls off the roof, twisting his ankle in the process. Ritsu asks to stay at the household residence for three days, with Hatori looking over him. While walking back from school, Tohru runs into Ritsu again, who plans to bring a bag of jelly buns for Shigure. Tohru and Ritsu sit on a park bench to talk about his cross-dressing, his apologizing, and his depression. | On a rainy afternoon, Tohru learns that Kyo becomes irritable when it downpours. Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo walk to the household residence, only to be greeted by Kagura. Shigure sends Kagura off with Kyo to do some shopping, to prevent the house from being wrecked by her affectionate outbursts. At the store, Kyo questions Kagura as to why she cares so much about him. Meanwhile, Tohru and Yuki go to visit the garden to see what can be harvested. Later in the evening, the four of them make their way back to the household residence. Shortly thereafter, Kazuma Sohma, a martial arts instructor and Kyo's adoptive father, arrives at the household residence. He talks to Kyo privately about his stay with Yuki and Shigure, to which Kyo responds negatively. Having seen Kyo smiling freely with Tohru, he tells Shigure discreetly that he is going to remove Kyo's bead bracelet from his wrist. During a deluged nightfall, Kazuma talks with Kyo, contemplating if he has accepted the Sohma family curse. Kazuma pulls of the bead bracelet from Kyo's wrist. | After his bead bracelet is removed from his wrist, Kyo transforms into a monstrous creature right in front of Tohru, causing him to sprint away. Tohru follows after him, but she trips behind a tree and begins to vomit. Akito appears, as he taunts her about the knowledge of the Sohma family secret. Akito soon leaves when Shigure locates the two. He apologizes for her finding out the truth about Kyo, but regardless she continues to search for Kyo. Kagura talks with Yuki, saying that only Tohru can help Kyo, which, in turn, convinces Yuki to find Tohru, due to his affection for her. It is revealed that Kazuma took Kyo in as his adoptive son because Kazuma's grandfather suffered the curse of the Cat before Kyo was born. Arisa and Saki head to Kyoko's tombstone once again, after Saki senses negative electric waves coming from Tohru. As they see Tohru there, Saki forbids Arisa from consoling her. | Kyo is reminded of when his mother would check his bead bracelet often, due to her fear of his true form. Tohru finally finds Kyo by a lake and he lashes out at her, but she is saved by Yuki, who restrains him. Tohru grasps his arm and tells him that she is frightened by his true form, but still wants to be together with him. Kyo calms down and changes back to his human form as the rain stops and the sun rises. He explains his mother always claimed to love him but was terrified of his true form. As they hug, Kyo changes into a cat. Tohru carries him home in her arms, with Yuki following, and they are greeted by a relieved Shigure and Kazuma. Soon thereafter, Kazuma says his farewells to Kyo, as he takes his leave. Later on, after Tohru asks Shigure permission to speak with Akito, he talks to her privately, mentioning that Akito bears the core of the curse and does not have very long to live. Yuki, Shigure, and Hatori accompany Tohru to the Sohma main residence to see Akito. After an initially meek exchange, Akito seizes her by her hair in a rage after Tohru is unable to say why she came, but Yuki and Shigure restrain him from hurting her further. However, she begins to feel sympathetic, explaining that he still has a life to live. Releasing her hair from his hand, Akito eventually realizes that Tohru accepts the Sohma family curse. The series ends on a bright future day with Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo back at the residence where they live. | ||||

At the same time Yuki turns down a female student and sees Kyo getting along with others quite well with envy. While Yuki and Tohru tend to the vegetable garden due to an unexpected typhoon storm, Yuki confesses his jealously of Kyo being able to interact easily while Yuki feels more isolated from others. Tohru encourages him to be more socially interactive to everyone, following her mother's words to be positive with other people. Kagura claims that she is Kyo's fiancee, though Kyo points out that it was under duress when Kagura brandished a knife when they were kids. Believing Tohru to be a rival for Kyo's affections, she challenges her, but Kyo shuts her mouth when she mentions his "true form". To prove her love, Kagura insists on cooking dinner. The magnificent feast she cooks, however, is ruined when Kagura gets too violent at Kyo's refusal to join. Kyo's irritation leaves her hurt and runs off to buy more food, but is accompanied by Tohru on the way back to the house. Kagura realizes that Tohru loved the Cat in the zodiac story, hence why she likes Kyo. The two girls start cooking hamburgers together, while later on Kyo tells Tohru his excitement in learning martial arts. The next day, Kagura became upset that Kyo was being mean to her, but accidentally get embraced by a paperboy in the rush and she was turned into a boar, though Yuki stopped him from seeing her. Tohru then tells Kagura that she wanted to be someone like her who can see great things about the person she likes. The next day, Tohru arrives back at her grandfather's place and is greeted by her relatives whom he was staying with. Later, Tohru's aunt reveals that she had known about Tohru's living arrangement with the Sohmas, thanks to a private detective and is concerned that this (including Kyoko's violent past) would negatively affect her son's ambitions to become a police officer. The discussion comes to a head stop when Tohru's grandfather slaps the son following his jeers at her, and the grandfather allows Tohru to live freely (as her parents had done) if she wants. Tohru breaks down as she truthfully reveals that she wants to spend more time with the Sohmas. Yuki and Kyo, who were both listening in from the outside after being bothered by Tohru's leaving, arrive to take Tohru back to their home. Yuki tells off the aunt's son for his meanness to Tohru, while Kyo tells Tohru that it is alright to be selfish once in a while, causing Tohru to remember her mother giving her the exact same advice when she was young. | The rice ball stand at the school festival is a success, mainly due to Yuki reluctantly cross-dressing at the third years' insistence. Momiji Sohma and Hatori Sohma also visit the stand. Momiji causes chaos when he hugs Tohru and transforms into a rabbit, though Yuki is able to distract the potential witnesses. On the school rooftop, Hatori cunningly takes a picture of Yuki and Kyo at Akito's request and leaves with Momiji. As they leave, Yuki warns Tohru not to be alone with Hatori as he is the doctor who wipes people's memories. After the festival ends, Tohru's best friends Arisa and Saki confront her about their suspicions of her close relationship with Yuki and Kyo, which Tohru inadvertently reveals that she is living with them. To confirm for themselves, Arisa and Saki invite themselves to a sleepover at the Sohmas' house. That night, the pair find that Tohru is living quite comfortably and happily with the Sohmas, while Yuki and Kyo assuage their concerns that Tohru is the type of person who would never ask for her friends' help even though she deserves it. Tohru herself later recounts to Arisa and Saki how she was saved by a young boy in guiding her back home after getting lost, and had kept the boy's cap as a memento, with Kyo listening in. The next morning, Arisa and Saki give the Sohmas their blessing to look after Tohru, albeit in a manner resembling parents giving away their bride. When Hatori leaves the room to answer the visiting Shigure, Momiji states that Hatori had to wipe the memory of his relationship with a woman. Later, Tohru accompanies Hatori when Tohru's mis-step causes him to instinctively catch her, turning him into a seahorse (a sign of the Dragon zodiac). While Tohru attempts to help the unconscious Hatori, he flashes back to when he first met his assistant, Kana Sohma, two years previously. The pair were soon in a relationship for two months, even after Kana found out Hatori's secret. It ended, however, when Akito threw into a violent temper that caused Hatori to nearly go blind in his left eye and then blamed Kana. Kana soon became mentally ill, forcing Hatori to wipe her memories of their relationship at Akito's suggestion. Hatori wakes up and soon hears a passing Kana being engaged with someone else, making him happy that she has moved on. When Hatori asks Tohru what happens to snow when melted, Tohru simply replies "Spring comes", the same answer Kana gave. Hatori later leaves Tohru with Shigure. Tohru insists that Kyo and Yuki go with Shigure to celebrate at the family estate while she stays in the house all by herself. However, on their way there, the Sohmas encounter Saki, where she points out that Tohru will truly feel alone as it would be the first time she will spend the New Year without her mother. The next day, during the long-distance run, Tohru meets Hatsuharu, who interrupts the race between Kyo and Yuki by tripping up the former. Hatsuharu then challenges Kyo to a fight to make up for Kyo's absence in New Year's, where his personality switches to "Black Haru". However, the fight stops when Yuki collapses from the fever, and, after hugging Tohru, Hatsuharu transforms into an ox to take Yuki back home. Back at Shigure's house, Tohru is worried about Yuki and decides to watch over him with Hatsuharu while Shigure and Kyo went back to school to pick up their belongings. Hatsuharu then explains to Tohru that when he, Kyo, and Yuki were kids back then, he used to hate Yuki, but when Yuki smiled at him, he fell in love with him. When Kagura leaves, Shigure pushes Kyo too far when he states that, even though he hates Yuki, Kyo is afraid of getting to know him, forcing Kyo to run away. Worrying about him, Tohru catches up to Kyo, encouraging him that he does not have to get along with Yuki if he does not want to. On Valentine's Day, Tohru and Yuki accompany Kyo and Kagura for their double date, while Shigure delivers the chocolates to Hatori and the other Sohma members for Tohru. After arriving at Hatori's house, Shigure discusses with Hatori about Tohru, their dreams when they were kids, and Shigure's manipulation of Tohru for his own ends. As she bathes, Momiji compares her to a traveler in a story who was duped into giving everything away to strangers, and eventually eaten by demons taking advantage of her kindness. The next day Tohru and the Sohma boys visit the inn and spend the night there. In the hot spring, the hostess hopes that Tohru will meet her child, who is the Monkey of the zodiac, and become friends. Meanwhile, Yuki presents a ribbon to Tohru as his return gift afterword. The next morning, Momiji reveals that he and Hatsuharu will be joining her high school as first years, though Tohru is more shocked that Momiji is a year younger than her despite his young appearance. | |||

Hatsuharu then aggressively defend Momiji by beating up Takei, and also prove why he has two different hair colors before Takei leaves. Later, Tohru meets Akito Sohma, the current head of the Sohma family and the one Momiji warns Yuki and Kyo not to cross paths with. When Yuki sees Tohru with Akito, he rushes towards them, and after watching Yuki quivering in fear when Akito confronts him for skipping the New Year's celebration, Tohru pushes Akito away. Akito then leaves the school grounds as Kyo watches from the distance. Back at the Sohma family estate, Shigure discusses with Hatori of Akito's low opinion of Tohru, the time where Akito psychologically tortured Yuki in the past, and the fact that Tohru may be the one person who can soothe the pain, something that Akito does not understand. After playing badminton until the sun sets, Tohru speaks with her mother in her thoughts, wondering what kind of zodiac is Akito, despite being a little afraid of him, though after spending time with her friends, that fear feels worlds away. Hatsuharu in turn thanks Tohru for cheering Yuki up after the confrontation with Akito. | |||

He confides in her that the brothers are not close for years partly due to Yuki's childhood isolation and wishes to reconcile with Yuki, particularly after hearing Akito confronting Yuki at school and is concerned it would depress him. Tohru comforts him that her mother only learned about a parent's worries when she became a parent herself but never forgotten the memories of being a child. Although Ayame is unsuccessful in getting closer with Yuki, he does not leave Shigure's house until the afternoon next day, when Hatori arrives to take him back at Hatsuharu's request. Afterwards, Yuki acknowledges his brother wanting to bond with him. | |||

Momiji recites how on the day he was born, his mother rejected him after finding out he turned into rabbit when embracing him, an effect of the Sohma curse. When the mother stabbed herself, Momiji's father suggested that it would be better if she would forget about him. Thus, Hatori wiped her memories of Momiji so she would not regret giving birth to "that creature". As a result, Momo does not realize that Momiji is her older brother while he watches them from afar. Tohru is saddened about what his mother did, especially when the story reminded her of the day Kyoko died, but someday like Momiji, she wants to embrace all of her memories and consider those memories precious. The next day, Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo went to visit Kyoko's grave with Arisa (wearing the "Crimson Butterfly" biker coat Kyoko once owned) and Saki, although they discover Tohru's grandfather visited before them. Yuki notices that despite the deaths of her parents, Tohru still manages to smile. Saki meanwhile talks to Kyo and he is shocked when she tells him his thoughts are filled with regret and "chaos". As the sun sets, Yuki notices and seems to recognize the baseball cap in Tohru's room, while Kyo gets closer to a sleeping Tohru and whispers "I'm sorry". | |||

Meanwhile Yuki and Kyo remain silent since visiting Kyoko's grave, causing Tohru to worry. Unable to handle the awkwardness any longer she apologizes to them but slips and causing the boys to turn into their respective animals. The boys reassure Tohru that they were preoccupied and not at all angry at her, though when they started arguing, Tohru is happy that they are back to normal. Ayame crashes the vacation the next day, and advises Hatori that he should not shoulder the burdens of his memories with Kana alone and be left behind while she moves on happily with her life. Moreover, Hatori should also move on with his own life. The episode ends with Tohru's homeroom teacher, Mayuko Shiraki, gazing at the photo of herself and Kana at the wedding. | |||

| Exasperated that Tohru is still using her school swimsuit at the pool, Arisa and Saki decide to buy a new swimsuit for her. Yuki and Kyo are forced to come along but their input was made moot when the girls decided to get a pink swimsuit. While having soba for lunch, Arisa recalls how she first met Tohru in middle school. Back when she was still in a violent street gang, her idol was the Crimson Butterfly who had since become a mother and had a daughter who goes to the same school as Arisa. However she was shocked that the Butterfly's daughter turned out to be a plain, strange, spaced out girl, and Kyoko (the Crimson Butterfly) became a doting parent. It is at their home that Tohru first calls Arisa "Uo-chan" after Kyoko first suggested it. The love displayed between Tohru and Kyoko leads Arisa to be reminded of the neglect from her single father, and she rejected them both. The meeting and her past circumstances causes Arisa to break down as she realizes that she may become permanently stuck in her situation. In a post-credits scene, a group of female delinquents try to intimidate a passerby, but run away when Momiji begins speaking German to them. | |||

| Continuing from the previous episode, Tohru saved Arisa from getting beaten by her fellow gang members and took her back to her house. Gradually embracing the loving environment that she never had, Arisa would spend more time with Tohru and Kyoko. Others around them, however, thought Arisa constantly bullied Tohru due to their contrasting personalities. One night, however, Arisa decided to quit the gang, and was saved from nearly being killed when Kyoko rescued her at Akimoto's (the lone gang member sympathetic to Arisa) request. Kyoko then explained her theory of life that there are feelings that she does not understand until she gets hurt and make trouble, and when she hits rock bottom, then she will understand, and finally, she needs gentleness to feel the pain and not let this be for nothing. Arisa emotionally declares wanting to become Tohru's best friend. From that point on, Arisa and Tohru became best friends, eventually reaching 8th grade and befriending Saki, and hung out with each other before Kyoko's untimely death. Back to the present, a group of female delinquents attempt to threaten Arisa and pick a fight with her, but Arisa then taught one of those delinquents that there are other ways to show off. As the sun sets, even though Kyoko died, her words, feelings, and Tohru herself nourished Arisa to grow. | Hatsuharu brings over an exhausted Kisa Sohma, who is the Tiger of the Zodiac, to Shigure's home. He reveals how Kisa ran away from home after being constantly bullied at school and has since been unable to speak. After biting him, she runs off, prompting Tohru to follow her. Kisa's situation also forcefully reminds Yuki of his own earlier suffering from Akito. Tohru soon finds Kisa and meets her mother. With Yuki eavesdropping out of sight, Tohru tells of her own experiences of being bullied and unable to tell anyone but felt relief when Kyoko found out and comforted Tohru. Kisa is moved by this and embraces Tohru after transforming back into a young girl. To allow time for both mother and daughter to heal, Kisa stays at Shigure's house for three days, never leaving Tohru's side but still mute. At school, Momiji believes that Kisa's bullying is due to her physical appearance as an effect of the Sohma curse. That afternoon after school, Hatsuharu brings a note from Kisa's homeroom teacher, stating that she needs to find the good in herself in order to recover and move on. Yuki disagrees, believing that one can recover only when someone else accepts them for who they are, referring to Tohru's acceptance of him. Kisa finally speaks in agreement, and resolves to better herself by returning to school. Yuki also resolves to move forward; unwilling to consider the offer earlier, he now accepts becoming the next student council president. | |||

| While returning to Shigure's house, Tohru meets Ritsu Sohma, the Monkey of the Zodiac and the hostess' child. However, Ritsu panics easily whenever anything goes wrong and is apologetic. Shigure wants Ritsu to have some confidence and talk without panicking, though it didn't work when Yuki and Kyo returned, and when Tohru accidentally embraces Ritsu, she was shocked that Ritsu is a boy instead of a girl due to wearing a kimono. Ritsu then explains that ever since he wore Kagura's dress in the past, wearing girl's clothes makes him feel calmer. Then, Mitsuru rushes to Shigure's house for his manuscript, even after Shigure tricked her into going to a sushi restaurant. He then secretly tricks Ritsu into sending Mitsuru away, though Ritsu believes that she is a stalker to Shigure. But, when he sees her making a suicide note for not getting the manuscript from Shigure, Ritsu is starting to feel bad for her. Soon after, though, Shigure finally gives his manuscript to Mitsuru. The manuscript that was already done, however, is ruined when Ritsu accidentally spills a cup of coffee on it, forcing Mitsuru to pass out and he ran away to the rooftop. Believing that he caused trouble for the last time, Ritsu was about to commit suicide to avoid making further mistakes, especially when he remembers that his parents were apologizing because of his clumsiness. However, Tohru stops Ritsu and encourages him that even though no one is born with a reason to be alive, he can just find a reason to live, like the time Tohru found her reason to live, to become someone who can live for the sake of the others, and that he might meet with someone who wants to be with him. Feeling touched by her words, Ritsu agrees with her and he should live for someone else's sake. Later that night, after buying takoyaki while Shigure re-finishes his manuscript, Ritsu relates to Mitsuru about causing trouble for others and not having a reason to live, but after hearing his words about finding a reason to live for someone else, Mitsuru felt that she can keep going. Soon after, Ritsu and Mitsuru became friends, though they both still panic easily and they both apologized to each other. | |||

| When Kisa begins spending more time with Tohru, a young jealous boy, Hiro Sohma, meets Tohru in person. He immediately belittles the older girl and takes Tohru's notebook, which contains the photo of Kyoko. With the help of Kyo, Momiji, and Kisa, Hiro gives back Tohru's notebook. As punishment, Tohru hugs the boy, which turns him into a sheep. Despite his dislike and jealously of Tohru, Hiro still brings Kisa to Shigure's house to watch an anime show. Hiro then demands Tohru to take him and Kisa out somewhere. At the park, it is revealed that some time prior, Hiro had admitted his love for Kisa to Akito, who later physically harmed the young girl resulting in her hospitalization. Hearing of this, Hiro subsequently began to ignore Kisa to prevent any further harm coming to her. Kisa's bullying occurred soon after, and Hiro was unable to help after ignoring her so suddenly. Thus Hiro became angry at himself and took that anger out on Tohru, who was able to help Kisa recover. Tohru, however, comforts him that it takes courage to admit that he is still a kid but he should be able to protect Kisa in the future. | |||

| Motoko Minagawa and two members of the "Prince Yuki" fan club come up with an elaborate plan to rid Yuki of Tohru by finding out the weakness of "demon queen" Saki. Saki invites them over to her house after school so the trio can search for her weakness under the pretense of asking her about her waves ability. Surprised at how normal Saki's place is despite her personality, the trio begin searching for clues in her room, but discover Megumi Hanajima, Saki's younger brother, hiding behind a closet. The awkward tension between the group is broken when Saki deduces their real reason for coming, and she and Megumi call out their actions in spite of their jealousy of Tohru's closeness with Yuki. The trio run off after Megumi recites their names (having been warned by Saki earlier to not say their names so carelessly should they wish to be cursed). Saki does admit to being a little jealous that Tohru is spending more time with the Sohmas, but is happily reassured when Arisa and Tohru drop by on her place out of concern for her. The next morning, Motoko and the two girls, having had the same nightmare about Saki and Megumi, are further teased when Saki states the curse will take effect after three days. | |||

| The episode recounts Saki's backstory prior to the start of the series. Born with powers that other people will never understand, she was bullied at elementary school by boys who claimed that she is a witch. This culminated into an incident when one of the bullies suddenly fell unconscious after Saki was thrown onto the classroom floor. Since then, the other kids began to prejudice her, accusing her of being the perpetrator when one kid got injured. Her brother Megumi comforts her and prays for someone to end her suffering. The situation did not improve even after a few years when girls burned Saki's arm and framed her for playing with matches, while she desperately tries to avoid repeating the incident. Saki was later transferred to a new high school out of her parents' concern for her well-being. She meet Tohru and Arisa during lunchtime, but unlike the others, Tohru and Arisa are being friendly to her, so she steadily begins to hang out with them. Two seasons pass when two girls ask Saki about the earlier incidents. The memories cause Saki to use her powers on them and runs off. But Tohru caught up to her and consoles Saki to not distance herself, while Arisa tells her to not assume things. Saki emotionally became firm friends with Tohru and Arisa as a result. After some time has passed, Saki can no longer hear the voices in her head, although she can still use her waves to "chastise" people a bit. As the sun sets, Kyoko explains that people cannot live without others and that no matter what happens, she wants to be accepted by them, and even if Saki, Tohru, and Arisa go to their separate ways, some part of the relationship will always stay with her. | |||

| Tohru is devastated that she failed the final exam, but Yuki, Arisa, and Saki cheered her up when they tell her that she can pass the make-up exam. But while walking home with Kyo, Tohru suddenly caught a fever and fell to the ground. Shigure suggested that she should stay home and rest until she gets better, as he calls Momiji to remind him that she is sick and can't work. Kyo makes some dinner for Tohru to eat, but when he sees her crying about not doing anything better, he tells her that she needs to get better soon, with his own way of saying it. Tohru smiled as she eats the dinner that he made. Hatori, Momiji, and Kana then visit Tohru, and after Hatori injects Tohru with the medicine, Yuki handed her the notebook with the notes for her to study for the make-up exam. After Tohru passed the make-up exam and walking home with Kyo and Yuki, they met Kagura again, even though Kyo tried to run away from her again. Shigure forced Kyo to go shopping with Kagura. While on a "date", Kagura asked Kyo about hiding his "true form" from Tohru, but then he shuts her mouth for mentioning it. But then, after getting back home, Kyo suddenly met someone familiar to him in the front door. | |||

| Kyo's foster father Kazuma Sohma visits Shigure's house to see Kyo. Overjoyed at his return, Kyo reminds Kazuma of his promise that he can return to the dojo. Kazuma however believes that it would be beneficial for Kyo to continue living at Shigure's house because of Tohru's positive influence. He thus confides in Shigure his plan to confront Kyo and expose his true cat form in the belief that Tohru will save him, which Kagura overhears. That night Kazuma removes the rosary from Kyo's wrist and exposes his true form in front of Tohru, with Kagura and Yuki watching from behind the scenes. Frightened of ultimately losing her, he runs away from the house but Tohru follows him. She catches up to him but Kyo violently turns her away. Although initially repulsed at the sight, Tohru does not back away but instead clings to Kyo and vows to never leave his side. The embrace reminds Kyo of his mother before her passing, and briefly turns back to normal before transforming into the cat, as Tohru carries him back to the house. | |||

| Kazuma leaves the house with Tohru without saying his goodbyes to Kyo. He confesses to her that he took Kyo in as atonement for the horrible things he said in his only meeting with his grandfather, Kyo's predecessor as the Cat spirit. Before long however, Kazuma grew to love Kyo as his son. Kyo manages to catch up to the pair, and apologizes for being a burden to Kazuma. Now knowing each others' feelings, Kyo and Kazuma firmly reconcile their relationship as Kyo vows to become stronger. Meanwhile Kagura leaves early while Yuki himself is unsure of his feelings. This attracts Hatsuharu's attention and brings it up with Tohru, who is also worried about Yuki. Hatsuharu later tells Yuki that it is alright to stay silent on his feelings but he should not make Tohru worry. Yuki soon reassures her that he strives to better himself gradually. After school, most of the Zodiac members are invited to dinner at Shigure's house. The episode ends with Hiro visiting Rin at the hospital, and Shigure himself at Akito's side, sensing that change is coming and the family curse might finally break. | |||

Tohru recaps the first season to explain her current circumstances and it is revealed it has been almost a full year since she started living with Shigure and the others. She confesses that she hopes to help and uncover the true nature of the curse. Tohru and Shigure are all talking of summer break as Yuki leaves early for his new student council duties. Yuki’s fan club storms into the President’s office to find out the names of the other students on the student council board, mostly to see if there’s any girls. Yuki meets Machi and Manabe as he enters the meeting room which appears to be a mess with papers and files scattered around. Manabe introduces himself as the Vice President and Machi as treasurer before he drags Yuki as he departs. Manabe makes a rude remark and Yuki realizes he’s being made fun of, something that never happens to him. Motoko rememberers when she first met Yuki a year ago and how she’s doted on him and fell in love since then. She and Rika Aida devise a plan to break into the Student Council Room and find to their surprise that it’s unlocked and Yuki is in there alone. Yuki and Tohru are washing dishes as he shares what he’s learned from his encounters with the board members and his senpais. | |||

| The school students are reminded to submit their career plans and that there will be a parent teacher meeting after the summer breaks. Hanajima, Uo, Yuki, Kyo and Tohru all decide to have lunch together on the school ground, when Uo suggests to Tohru could marry either Yuki or Kyo instead of starting a career plan. The next day, Tohru and Kyo are invited for lunch at Kyo's master Kazuma's house, when suddenly Kazuma gets a call from Kyo's father. Kazuma informs the pair that he needs to go out urgently and will be back soon. He meets with Kyo's father who is disgusted by Kyo since he is possessed by the Cat zodiac. Kyo's father suggests that Kyo be put away in a pitch-black room as the cursed cat deserves, though Kazuma stands up for Kyo, claiming that the boy is changing for the better and that he will protect him at all costs. While leaving from work, Momiji tells Tohru he has decided his career but he may face some difficulty and it may not be possible. Yuki comes to pick up Tohru from work where they talk about their career plans as well. When Tohru gets home, she goes to the kitchen and finds Kyo making a late somen snack. The two have a deep conversation about the future where Kyo expresses that as the cat of the zodiac, the Soma family may not approve of him to take up Kazuma's dojo or any other job, as well as that Tohru's focus should be on her own future since her mother passed. Upon this, Tohru starts to cry, realizes that she actually worried about getting a job and making it on her own in the future, but pretends that everything is okay so that she doesn't have to deal with such feelings. Shigure pops in and advises she focus on the present, as the future will eventually arrive in time. Tohru invites Yuki to come enjoy the snacks so that they can enjoy it as a family. | |||

| Yuki wakes from a dream that has his mother telling him that he is just a tool to be used. When Ayame visits Shigure's house, Yuki makes a surprise announcement to visit his shop as a way to get to know his brother better. On a Sunday, he and Tohru come to Ayame's shop which turns out to be a clothes shop that caters to the fantasies of men. His assistant Mina Kurume takes Tohru away to dress her upon a costume but also to give the brothers some private time. Ayame brings up the upcoming parent-teacher conference and offers to accompany Yuki, though the latter wants to bring their parents despite not having been in contact for a long time. Privately noting that he also acted indifferently towards Yuki so that he could live freely, Ayame advises that regardless of what their parents think, Yuki should follow his own feelings, that he is not a tool for others and that he is not alone to help him, using his shop and Mina as examples. Both brothers though acknowledge the need to accept their differences and move on from them, something that Yuki confesses to Tohru when she returns in a cute dress outfit. | |||

| During a hospital visit, Hatsuharu gets dumped by Isuzu "Rin" Sohma. Shocked, he becomes moody until eventually snapping and "Dark Haru" trashes the classroom. At Momiji's plea for help, Yuki, Kyo and Tohru rush to the scene. Each tries to calm Hatsuharu, though when Kyo and Haru nearly come to blows, their homeroom teacher Shiraki literally pours cold water on them. After cooling down, Hatsuharu is temporarily suspended from school and tells Yuki that Rin dumped him but not explaining the reason for it. During his suspension, Yuki resolves to return to the Sohma estate to visit Hatsuharu with great courage though he thinks he sees Rin as well in spite of supposing to be at the hospital. Hatsuharu tells Yuki that despite the situation, he will never stop loving Rin. Yuki leaves the estate satisfied with his decision, while Rin looks on from behind. | |||

It turns out to be a haunted house, though Tohru is the only one to be terrified at all the contraptions. Meanwhile Arisa meets up with Kureno Sohma by coincidence, the pair having previously met once before at the convenience store she works at. They head to a diner for some tororo soba to catch up, though Arisa's feelings for Kureno become twisted when he remarks their first meeting happened only because he was in the area unnecessarily. She loses her temper and storms out though Kureno catches up to her and quickly apologies. He leans in as if to embrace her, before leaving her hanging. Stumped and confused, Arisa confides to Saki that she will not chase after him and let him come to her. Kureno meanwhile regrets that he may have to forget about Arisa as he arrives in Akito's room. | |||

Region 1
In Region 1, the series was released on DVD by FUNimation Entertainment. FUNimation released the series in four single disc volumes, with English and Japanese audio and English subtitles. The first two volumes include six episodes, while the final two have seven. The series was released as a box set on 16 November 2004. In 2007, FUNimation began re-releasing the individual volumes as part of their value priced Viridian Collection. Other than a slightly redesigned cover to include the Viridian Collection tag, the volumes are identical to the regular versions. The series box set was also re-released as part of the Viridian Collection, in the form of a thin-pack set.[7] A 16th anniversary Blu-ray boxset of the series was issued on August 1, 2017 containing a 24-page series guide art booklet and new extras.[8]

Region 2 (Japan)
The series was originally released in Japan in nine individual DVD volumes by King Records, with each volume containing three episodes except for the first volume, which contained two.[11] The first, sixth, eighth, and ninth volumes were also given limited edition releases. The first and sixth limited edition volumes included a series box, while the eight included a set of six trading cards and a figurine. The final volume's limited edition version also included a figurine. A deluxe season box set was released on 25 April 2007. In addition to the complete series, the box set includes a message card from Natsuki Takaya, a 60-page deluxe booklet, and a bonus Fruits Basket CD soundtrack.[12] All of the original volumes have Japanese language tracks with no subtitles.

Region 2 (Europe)
Through their deal with FUNimation for subleasing titles, MVM Entertainment released the series to Region 2 DVD in Europe. The series was released as four individual volumes which are identical to those released by Funimation in Region 1.[7] On 14 November 2006, FUNimation announced that MVM would not longer be distributing their titles. Instead, all of their title distribution in the United Kingdom would be handled by Revelation Films.[14] Revelation Films re-released the four individual volumes under their label and released the series box set on 22 January 2007.[15]
However MVM have regained the licence and re-released the series as a four disc set on February 6, 2012 in the UK. MVM also released the Blu-ray Collector's Edition on February 19, 2018.

Region 4
Fruits Basket was released to Region 4 DVD by Madman Entertainment on 15 October 2003 in the form of a complete series box set. The set uses the same box set used for the original Region 1 release of the complete series by FUNimation. The on-disc extras in the set include character profiles, textless opening and closing sequences, a behind the scenes featurette, an interview with the director, and image galleries.[16]
