"Levitating" received generally positive reviews from music critics, with many praising the production. Upon the release of Future Nostalgia, the solo version entered official charts in Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Portugal, Slovakia and Spain.

A remix of "Levitating" by The Blessed Madonna was released through Warner Records as the lead single from Lipa's first remix album Club Future Nostalgia: The Remix Album on 13 August 2020. The remix features additional songwriting and vocals from American singer Madonna and rapper Missy Elliott. It was accompanied by a music video directed by Will Hooper.

Background

After figuring out the title of her second studio album, Future Nostalgia, Lipa began working backwards, figuring out the sound she desired.[1] Shortly after, "Levitating" was written, which is the first track recorded that appears on the album's final track listing.[2] The song was written in a studio session in Jamaica between Lipa, Clarence Coffee Jr. of The Monsters & Strangerz, Sarah Hudson and Stephen Kozmeniuk.[3][4] The session ended up with the collaborators ordering doughnuts and 'levitating' from the amount of sugar they consumed.[5][6] Lipa recalled feeling as though she was in Austin Powers when writing. She also decided to add a rap in order to get her British side across, because she often gets mistaken from where she is actually from.[7] The song helped dictate what the rest of Future Nostalgia would sound like and where Lipa thought everything made sense, where she had both the "future" and "nostalgia" elements. She called it the "starting point" of the album.[2][5][6] "Levitating" serves as the fifth track on Future Nostalgia, which was released on 27 March 2020.[7]

Music and lyrics

The solo version of "Levitating" is a British dance, electro-disco, power pop, and space rock song,[8][9][10][11] drawing influence from electronic music, with retro and 1980s elements, and a 1990s pop and R&B feel.[12][13][14][15] The song runs for 3 minutes and 23 seconds and is composed in 4
4
time
and the key of B minor, with a tempo of 88 beats per minute.[7][16] It includes lush verses and electrifying, euphoric and blissful 1990s choruses.[17][18] The middle eight includes a Blondie-influenced rap, where Lipa notably uses her British accent.[7] The production includes campy disco tropes,[19] funky synth beats,[20] a squelchy bass,[15] rubbery basslines, syncopated handclaps,[21] nu-disco rhythms,[22] wonky and bizarre synths,[23][24] funky guitars, talk box vocals,[25] a hypnotic synth line and disco strings.[26]

"Levitating" has many outer space references,[14][19][27] using the metaphor of love as a spaceship to transmit radiant euphoria and happiness.[28][29] Lyrically, the song sees Lipa exposing her feelings for a significant other.[17] For NME, Rhian Daly stated she sings about "a love 'written in the stars'," while 411Mania's David Hayter, labelled it an "intergalactic ode to orgasms."[8][21] The song received many comparisons to the works of Chic, Daft Punk,[9] Debbie Harry,[30] The Jackson 5 ("Blame It on the Boogie", 1978),[31] Kylie Minogue, Moloko,[32] Kate Nash,[33] Outkast ("Rosa Parks", 1998),[31] Katy Perry,[34] the Spice Girls,[33] Tinie Tempah ("Pass Out", 2010),[8][35] The Weeknd (Starboy, 2016),[10] and Super Mario 64 (1996) sound effects.[26]

It had to be fun and bubbly but with lyrics that felt really smart. This is about me exploring happy songs and doing something that’s not 'dance crying'. It’s about having fun and meeting someone and falling in love and thinking, 'You’ve probably met me at the perfect time, let's just go for it.' It's the feeling when love makes you feel like you’re levitating. It's otherworldly. Things get quite Daft Punk-y here, but it's playful.

Critical reception

"Levitating" was met with generally favorable reviews from critics. In The Guardian, Laura Snapes stated that the song "blooms like a row of tropical flowers."[36] For Crack Magazine, Michael Cragg noted it's French bloghouse hallmarks, previously explored on "Don't Start Now".[37] DIY's Elly Watson labelled the song "dancefloor-ready," while Mike Nied of Idolator named it multiple titles, including a "starry-eyed love song," a "straight up sugar rush," an "intergalactic adventure," and "breezy and feel-good"[17][38] For Billboard, Bianca Gracie labelled it a "summery jam" and recommended playing it on a Miami road trip.[24] Nick Smith of musicOMH stated that the song comes off as "a funky caffeine and sugar overdose."[31] In Slant Magazine, Sal Cinquemani praised it, labelling it a "good earworm."[39] Bailey Slater of Wonderland called it a "roller disco bop" and thought that it would go viral on TikTok.[40]

For Vinyl Chapters, Jamie Parmenter praised Lipa's rap in the middle eight, writing one has the "pleasure of hearing the singer’s English accent" and it "shows the confidence she has in her own talent."[41] Conrad Duncan of Under the Radar criticized the rap calling it a "bafflingly unnecessary misfire," while also noting it's aim for Kurtis Blow.[42] The Arts Desk's Joe Muggs also criticized the rap, writing it "falls short."[35] Gabbie Nirenburg of No Ripcord praised "Levitating"'s blend of disco and futuristic while also calling the lyrics "clever."[43] For The Young Folks, Ryan Feyre called the song a high point on Future Nostalgia and wrote that it's "filled with raw adrenaline."[44]

Background and release

On 30 June 2020, Lipa's manager Ben Mawson revealed in an interview with Music Week that they were attempting to create a collaboration between Lipa and Madonna.[54] Future Nostalgia was heavily influenced by Madonna's Confessions on a Dance Floor, both of which feature songs co-produced by Stuart Price, including "Levitating".[55][4] When preparing for the official single release of "Levitating", Lipa originally intended to release a "fun" club remix by The Blessed Madonna. After finishing the remix, Lipa thought that Madonna and Missy Elliott would sound amazing on it. Lipa reached out to both of them via email, thinking that both would say they were too busy, but hoped at least one would say yes. However, both Madonna and Elliott responded to Lipa stating they were up for it and enjoyed the track. Lipa compared recording the remix to a massive jigsaw puzzle, where she was waiting for parts to be recorded and listening back on her phone.[56]

On 27 July 2020, Lipa announced that the remix would be released as the lead single from her remix album Club Future Nostalgia: The Remix Album.[57][58] The song premiered at 09:00 PT (16:00 UTC) on 13 August 2020.[59] The single will be released on 12-inch vinyl on 21 August 2020 by We Still Believe, an independent label owned by The Blessed Madonna.[60]

Composition

The remix version of "Levitating" is an electro house and future bass track, with a throwback disco vibe, running for 4 minutes and 10 seconds.[61][62][63][64] It increases the BPM of the original version with Lipa, Elliott, and Madonna each contributing a verse while Lipa and Madonna harmonize together.[61][65] The remix has a dance-orientated production, with Daft Punk-esque vocoder backing vocals, accelerated pounding bass thuds, flickering synths, laid-back, groove-driven beats, and 2020 harmonies.[61][63][66][67]

Critical reception

In Rolling Stone, Brittany Spanos viewed the "Levitating" remix as "tongue-twistingly," and a "fast-paced romp," while also labelling Elliott's verse "flirty" and "freaky."[65] The staff of Rap-Up called it a "pulsing dance-floor bop."[62] Billboard's Katie Bain stated the remix brings the original to "new heights," while Heran Mamo of the same magazine stated it shows Lipa's "star power."[61][68] For Entertainment Weekly, Nick Romano said the remix is "what you need to turn any isolated apartment into the hottest club."[67]

Music video

On 18 June 2020, it was reported that Lipa was filming a music video for Future Nostalgia's next single, and that her boyfriend, Anwar Hadid, would portray her love interest in the video. The video was filmed in mid-June at a studio in London.[69][70] The visual premiered at 05:00 PT (12:00 UTC) on 14 August 2020.[71] The music video was directed by Will Hooper.[72]
