Lashrecse Aird

Lashrecse Dianna Aird (born June 22, 1986) is an American Democratic politician, currently serving as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, representing parts of Chesterfield County, Dinwiddie County, Prince George County Hopewell, and Petersburg. Aird serves on the General Laws; Health, Welfare and Institutions; and Appropriations committees.

Aird's top legislative priorities are economic development, K-12 funding and higher education, women's rights, senior care and veteran resources, and crime prevention.[1]

Career

While attending Virginia State University, Aird met Virginia Delegate Rosalyn Dance, who invited her to apply for an internship with her office. Aird then interned with Dance throughout college while also working 12-hour shifts at a local factory for extra money. After college, she went to work for Dance as a legislative assistant. When Dance successfully ran for the state Senate in 2015, Aird ran to fill her seat. She won, becoming the youngest woman - at age 28 - ever elected to the Virginia House of Delegates.[2]

In 2018, Aird proposed a budget amendment to increase funding for the state's At-Risk Add-On program, which would substantially increase state funding for schools with low-income students.[3]

Legislative issues

Aird has placed a significant emphasis on education (K-12 and higher education), local governments in fiscal distress, and workforce development. Additionally, she has helped secure millions of dollars for school systems in her district.[4]
