Kanchrapara College

Kanchrapara College, established in 1972,[1] is the general degree college at Kanchrapara, in North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. It offers undergraduate courses in arts, commerce and sciences. It is affiliated to University of Kalyani.[2]

History

This College was established in 13 November 1972, under the guidance of the then Member of the Legislative Assembly (India) of the area, Mr. Jagadish Chandra Das. Initially it started its journey with only 32 students by affiliation of only Pre-University class.

'Department of Environmental Science'

The Department of Environmental Science was established in the year 2008 and pioneered the field of undergraduate study of the subject by running the first ever B.Sc. (Hons.) course in Environmental Science under the University of Kalyani. The departmental laboratory is well equipped with scientific instruments for environmental monitoring including assessment of air, water, soil, and noise parameters. Seminar lectures are also arranged to provide the students better exposure of the subject. Every year one academic excursion is organized in different areas to expose the students to varied environmental set up. The faculty members of the department are engaged in different research activities and share their experiences with the students. The faculties keep them up-to-date by attending various International/ National Conference/ Seminar/ Workshop/ Symposia. A good number of research publications have been made by the faculty members in different international/ national peer-reviewed journals of repute. Dr. Piyal Bhattacharya had performed the task of Principal Investigator of a major research project funded by the DST-SERB (Start-up Research Grant for Young Scientists), Government of India. He had completed another minor research project (MRP) funded by the UGC. The Department houses an array of sophisticated as well as routine analytical instruments: Ion-Selective-Electrode bench top Meter, High volume sampler, Digital VIS Spectrophotometer, Vertical Laminar Air Flow, Colorimeter, Digital Weighing Balance, Centrifuge Machine, Digital pH Meter, Digital Conductivity Meter, GPS, Compound Microscope, Double-distilled water Distillation Unit, Single-distilled water Distillation Unit, Hot air oven, Mechanical Shaker, Autoclave, Compact dry and wet bulb thermometer, Pocket Digital Thermometer, Pocket Digital Conductivity Meter, Pocket Digital Salinity Meter, Pocket Digital TDS Meter, Pocket Digital DO Meter, Digital Sound Level Meter, Hot Plate, Planimeter, Rotameter, Mirror Stereoscope, etc. The Department is proud of having considerably good success rate for its outgoing students. The alumni of this department after graduation have pursued their M.Sc./M.B.A. from different institutes of repute, e.g., University of Kalyani, Visva-Bharati University, University of Calcutta, Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management, University of Burdwan, Guru Ghasidas Vishyavidyalaya, Asutosh College, etc.

Accreditation

Kanchrapara College was awarded a B+ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).[3] The college is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC).[1]
