KWCL-FM 96.7 FM is an American radio station licensed by the FCC to serve Oak Grove in West Carroll Parish in the northeastern portion of the state. The station operates on the frequency of 96.7 megahertz.

The license is assigned to KWCL-FM Broadcasting Company, Inc.[1] The station is owned and operated by Irene Robinson.

History

KWCL started as a daytime only AM station licensed on 1280 kHz.[2] The AM station is no longer licensed.

Irene Robinson's husband, "Poison" Ivy Robinson, co-owned the station with David Blossman from 1969 to 1980. When David Blossman died in 1980, the station was sold and Ivy Robinson moved to Shreveport.[3]

In February, 1984, an application was filed to transfer the license from Baker Broadcasting to Heart of Dixie Broadcasting Corp, owned by Bennett Strange[4]

Irene Robinson has owned KWCL since 1990 after she repurchased the station along with other partners that she later bought out.[3]

KWCL added FM broadcasting in 1973[5]

Their daughter, Kelley Robinson Hendrix, is currently Chief Operator and Sales Manager.

Programming

KWCL-FM covers all major sports in West Carroll Parish, including basketball, softball and baseball. It is known for its coverage of Oak Grove Tiger Football.

KWCL-FM also has a morning talkshow, "The Mighty Mess", which covers a plethora of topics. It airs Monday through Friday from 8:05am to 8:30am CST.[3]

Awards

In 1981, the station received the affiliate of the month award from the Louisiana Network, which provided statewide news to local stations.[6]

KWCL-FM has received numerous awards from the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters, including "Small Market Radio Station of the Year" six different times.

In 1996, the station won the Louisiana farm bureau federation's award for outstanding coverage of agriculture news and activities in Louisiana.[7]

In 1999 the station again won the Louisiana farm bureau award for outstanding coverage of agricultural news.[8]

It has also been named a finalist for the Marconi Award - an award presented for Excellence in Broadcasting - by the National Association of Broadcasters.[9]
