Johnny Come Lately

Johnny Come Lately is a 1943 drama film directed by William K. Howard starring James Cagney, Grace George, Marjorie Main and Hattie McDaniel. It was the first film produced by William Cagney Productions in March 1943.

Plot

In 1906, Tom Richards, a drifter, arrives in Plattsville and befriends newspaper proprietor Vinnie McLeod, who is battling the corruption of the town's leading citizen W.M. Dougherty. He takes over as managing editor of the Plattsville "Shield and Banner" and, despite initial resistance from the oppressed citizens, finally drives Dougherty out of town.
