Development

On May 21, 2013, it was announced that Steven Spielberg was executive producing a television series adaptation of the Halo video game series with Xbox Entertainment Studios through his production company Amblin Television.[4] In 2014, the production moved to the cable network Showtime following Xbox Entertainment Studios' closure. It remained in development at the network for almost four years.[2]

On June 28, 2018, it was announced that Showtime had given the production a series order for a first season consisting of ten episodes. The series is set to be written and showrun by Kyle Killen who would executive produce alongside Rupert Wyatt, who would also direct multiple episodes. Production companies expected to be involved with the series include 343 Industries and Amblin Television.[2][5][6] On November 1, 2018, it was reported that the television series would feature the character of John-117 / Master Chief in a series regular role.[7] On December 3, 2018, it was announced that Wyatt was stepping down as a director and executive producer due to scheduling issues that arose out of production delays.[8]

In late February 2019, Otto Bathurst was brought in to replace Rupert Wyatt and the number of episodes was reduced to nine.[9] On March 18, 2019 it was announced that Showtime had added Steven Kane as co-showrunner, with Kyle Killen focusing on the project's stateside production and Kane concentrating on physical production in Budapest.[10]

In April 2019, Showtime unveiled the casting of several characters including Pablo Schreiber[11] as the Master Chief and Yerin Ha who will play a newly created role as Quan Ah a 16-year-old from the Outer Colonies.[12] Additional casting was announced in August, with Natascha McElhone cast in the dual role of Cortana and Catherine Halsey, and Bokeem Woodbine, Shabana Azmi, Bentley Kalu, Natasha Culzac and Kate Kennedy joining in supporting roles.[13]

For 2019, the series spent over $40 million on production costs according to Variety magazine.[14][15][16]
