Gunnhildur Yrsa Jónsdóttir

Gunnhildur Yrsa Jónsdóttir (born 28 September 1988) is an Icelandic footballer who plays as a midfielder for the Iceland women's national football team and Valur in the Icelandic Úrvalsdeild, on loan from Utah Royals FC in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). Gunnhildur, also known as Gunny, has seven siblings; Tindur, Urður, Ilmur, Þórunn, Sigurður, Sæmundur, and Elfur. Her parents are Laufey Sigurðardóttir and Jón Saemundsson.

Club career

Utah Royals FC, 2018–present

In January 2018, Gunnhildur signed with the Utah Royals FC for the team's inaugural season in the NWSL.[1] She scored in her first game on 24 March 2018, making it Utah's first goal in club history.[2] Gunnhildur was named to the NWSL team of the month for March.[3] Gunnhildur played every minute of the 2018 NWSL season with Utah, she finished the year with one goal and two assists.[4]

Loan to Adelaide United

Gunnhildur signed on loan with Adelaide United for the 2018-19 W-League season. She joined fellow Iceland teammate Fanndís Fridriksdóttir in Australia. Gunnhildur played every minute of the season and scored one goal.[5]

International career

Gunnhildur made her debut for the Iceland national team as she participated in qualifying for Euro 2013.[4] Iceland qualified for the tournament, but she wasn't selected to the final roster.

Gunnhildur played in every match for Iceland in qualifying for Euro 2017 she scored two goals as Iceland won their group and qualified for Euro 2017.[6] She was named to the Iceland squad for Euro 2017, this would be her first time playing in a major tournament.[7] Iceland lost all three group games at Euro 2017 and did not advance to the knockout stage.[4]

Gunnhildur competed with the Iceland national team at the 2016 Algarve Cup.[8] In qualifying for the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup Gunnhildur played in all eight matches and scored four goals. Iceland finished second in their qualifying group, and missed out on the UEFA play-offs by one point.[9]
