Building structure and role

Designed by Shōzō Uchii, it was completed in 1993 at a cost of 5.6 billion yens. A reinforced concrete structure, it is roughly 4940 sqm. It consists of 62 rooms spread over 2 floors and 1 basement floor. [1] It has 3 main wings:

  • A residential wing of private apartments on the East side, made of 17 rooms, for a total of 870 sqm.
  • A wing of 32 office rooms on the northern side
  • A wing dedicate to guest receptions on the southern side, made of 11 rooms

This palace is where the Emperor lives[2][3], not to be confused with the Main palace (宮殿, Kyūden), where various imperial court functions and receptions take place, and where most dinners with foreign heads of state happen.

Official name

In accordance with the imperial naming conventions, it was renamed Fukiage Sento Palace (吹上仙洞御所, Fukiage Sentō Gosho, litt. "Emeritus Imperial residence of Fukiage") when Akihito abdicated on 30 April 2019. Akihito left the palace on March 31st, 2020. The place is currently (July 2020) being prepared to become the main residence of Naruhito (currently living in Akasaka Palace), and will once again change its name when the Emperor settles in.[4][5]Its official name for the time being is Kyū Fukiage Sentō Gosho (旧吹上仙洞御所, litt. "Former emeritus Imperial residence of Fukiage").

When the Emperor resides, it is simply referred to as "the Imperial residence", Gosho (御所), or "the Imperial residence of the Imperial palace", Kōkyo Gosho (皇居御所).
