Force of Nature is a 2020 American action film directed by Michael Polish from a screenplay by Cory Miller. It stars Emile Hirsch, Kate Bosworth, Mel Gibson, David Zayas, Stephanie Cayo, Will Catlett, Swen Temmel, Tyler Jon Olsen, and Jorge Luis Ramos, and follows a gang of thieves in Puerto Rico who plan on executing a heist during a hurricane.

Premise

A gang of thieves plan on executing a heist amidst a hurricane, encounter trouble when a cop forces everyone to evacuate the building.

Cast

Production

In May 2019, Kate Bosworth and Mel Gibson were announced to star in the film, with Michael Polish directing from a screenplay by Cory Miller.[3] Further cast announcements occurred from June to September: Emile Hirsch,[4] Stephanie Cayo,[5] David Zayas,[6] and Jasper Polish.[7] Principal photography began in July 2019 in Miramar and Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. The budget was $23 million, with about $15 million spent on-location.[1]

Release

In April 2020, Lionsgate acquired distribution rights to the film.[8] Force of Nature was released in the United States by Lionsgate Films on digital, DVD, and Blu-ray Disc on June 30, 2020.[9][10][11]

The film was also theatrically released in several overseas countries, including Vietnam, where it debuted to $21,117.[2]

Reception

VOD sales

In its debut weekend, Force of Nature was the third-most rented film on the iTunes Store and fifth on FandangoNow.[12] In its second weekend the film placed fourth on FandangoNow and fifth at AppleTV, as well as finishing first on Spectrum's weekly chart.[13]

Critical response

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 9% based on 32 reviews, with an average rating of 3.49/10.[14] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 29 out of 100, based on 11 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".[15]
