Feminist Art Coalition

The Feminist Art Coalition (FAC) is a United States-wide collaboration of over 100 arts organizations and museums. The organizations are collectively creating a series of programming and exhibitions centered around feminist art to be held in the second half of 2020.

History

A feminist art initiative was conceived by Apsara DiQuinzio in early 2017 following the Women's March in Washington, D.C.[1] DiQuinzio, a curator at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, proposed harnessing the energy from the march into a series of women-led arts programming and was inspired by the Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA art event. The Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts awarded a $50,000 curatorial grant to the Feminist Art Coalition in 2017.[2] A working group of a dozen curators, including Lauren Cornell, Adrienne Edwards, Rita Gonzalez, and Henriette Huldisch, convened in Berkeley in early 2018. Members of the group invited colleagues to develop programming and exhibitions around feminist themes to be held during the latter part of 2020.[1] DiQuinzio used much of the Warhol grant to create a website for the initiative, which describes the Feminist Art Coalition as "platform for art projects informed by feminisms." The site includes essays from Trinh T. Minh-ha, Jack Halberstam, Peggy Phelan, and Saidiya Hartman.

Most of the events associated with the Feminist Art Collective are timed to coincide with the centennial of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution, which granted women the right to vote.[2] While it was framed early on as "female-first", organizers have emphasized that the initiative is gender-inclusive.[3]

Events

The events scheduled to take place as part of the Feminist Art Coalition include exhibitions, symposiums, surveys, and performances.[3]

Exhibitions

Retrospective exhibitions are being held by several institutions. ICA LA and the Hammer Museum are hosting the exhibition Witch Hunt, which examines sociopolitical constructs through a feminist lens. The exhibition includes 15 international artists and was curated by Anne Ellegood and Connie Butler.[4]

In addition to group exhibitions, a number of solo exhibitions are being held as a part of the coalition. Solo exhibitors include Howardena Pindell, Fernanda Laguna, Lynn Hershman Leeson, and Genesis Belanger.[1]
