The guild's master, a formerly human Dragon Slayer named Elefseria, instructs the team to subdue the fabled Five Dragon Gods, each rumored to rival the power of Acnologia. The team travels to the city of Ermina in search of the water dragon god, Mercphobia; in the process, they encounter a trio of Dragon Eaters from the Diabolos guild, who intend to gain Mercphobia's magic by devouring him. Mercphobia appears in a humanoid form to end the guilds' fighting, revealing that a century-old witch called the White Mage has already stolen much of his power, which he requests Natsu's team to help him recover before he loses control of his remaining magic. Back in Magnolia, Fairy Tail recruits a young woman and admirer of Natsu named Touka, whom Jellal Fernandes suspects to be the White Mage.

Lucy Heartfilia escapes and encounters Brandish μ, who, like Lucy, is searching Guiltina for Aquarius's key. Brandish helps Fairy Tail by beaching Diabolos's ship atop a hill, allowing Lucy's imprisoned friends to force the trio into retreat. Shortly afterward, Mercphobia loses control of himself and mindlessly attacks Ermina in his dragon form; Natsu's team reluctantly attempt to kill Mercphobia, but they are overwhelmed by his power. Meanwhile, Jellal confronts Touka over her identity as the White Mage and founder of Rebellious, a malevolent white magic cult that steals others' magic, but she is defended by Laxus Dreyar. When Fairy Tail begins to question Touka's background, however, the White Mage reveals herself to be another personality within Touka and attacks Jellal, only to be suppressed by Touka, who is captured by Gajeel. While Touka is interrogated at Fairy Tail's guildhall, the White Mage takes over again and steals the magic of everyone in the building.

Expressing interest in strengthening Natsu for a future confrontation, Ignia coaxes Natsu into eating his flames and flies away. The flames temporarily give Natsu the powers of the fire dragon god, which allows him to defeat Mercphobia, but also nearly sends Natsu on a rampage until Lucy calms him down. Regaining his senses, Mercphobia survives and is rendered permanently powerless by his defeat, which fulfills part of Fairy Tail's mission. Out of gratitude, Mercphobia directs Fairy Tail to the city of Drasil to find the wood dragon god, Aldoron; en route, the team encounters a celebrity guild whose members coincidentally resemble Fairy Tail's wizards. Upon arriving in one of Drasil's towns, the team reunites with Juvia Lockser, who has escaped from the White Mage and warns them about her shortly before they discover the town to be built on top of the gargantuan Aldoron's right hand.
