Background

In early 2020, Grey announced that she would be releasing a new album, but not in a traditional sense. She described the project as an "open-ended album", to which she will add songs over time.[3] She said on an interview with Insider, "I don't really believe in albums anymore – It's just such a different industry than it was when I was growing up, buying CDs and stuff. So I think it's more that, yes, I'm working on a project, but I'd like to call it more of just an endless playlist that I keep adding to."[4] The album is mainly produced by Grey and Jayson DeZuzio.

Promotion and singles

Grey released the first, lead single and title-track of the album "Dark Thoughts", on May 1, 2020, with the official music video releasing on the same day.[5][6] The music video was self-directed by Grey at her home in Napa.[7] The single was met with critical acclaim from various blogs and magazines.[8][9] The second single off the album, "Goosebumps", which is a cover of Travis Scott's 2016 hit, was released on June 10, 2020.[10][11] On July 3, 2020, Grey released the third single "Sunscreen".[12] The official music video was released the following day.[13]
