History

Clovelly Park station opened on 1 July 1966 when the Tonsley line, branching from the Noarlunga Centre line at Ascot Park, was opened.[1][2][3] The station was located immediately north of the level crossing at Alawoona Avenue and was named Chrysler Park after the adjoining car factory. On 26 June 1987 it was renamed Clovelly Park after Chrysler Australia and its factory was acquired by Mitsubishi Motors Australia.[4]

The station became the temporary terminus of the Tonsley line from 1 July 2019, following the closure of Tonsley station to facilitate the extension of the line to Flinders.[5][6]

With the redevelopment of the former car factory into the Tonsley Development Precinct for light industry and education, and the closure of the former Tonsley station on Sturt Road, the station is set to be rebuilt. Built as part of the rail extension to Flinders, the rebuilt station will be located to the immediate south of the adjacent Alawoona Avenue level crossing and will be named Tonsley to better reflect its location.[7][8]
