The club applied in December 2019 to join the North West Counties Football League for the 2020–21 season, the tenth tier of the English football league system, with the league listing them as an applicant in February 2020. The application was approved on 21 February 2020.[3][4]

On 24 April 2020 it was confirmed that Bury had applied to the placed in the National League for the upcoming season. A request that was subsequently rejected. [5]

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom, English football league competitions below the top flights were interrupted, but Bury A.F.C. anticipated a September 2020 start and received over 700 applications for the post of team manager.[6]

On 21 July 2020, the club were accepted into the NWCL Division One North for the 2020–21 season.[7]

On 29 July 2020, Ossett United manager and former Sunderland, Leicester City and Blackpool midfielder Andy Welsh was appointed as the club's first manager. He was selected from 750 applicants.[8]

On 10 August 2020, the club announced their first ever signing in Adam McWilliam, who had most recently played for A.F.C. Totton, after starting his career in Scotland.[9] The next day, the club had announced their second signing; Liam MacDevitt from Stalybridge Celtic.[10] MacDevitt has previously played football in New Zealand, and is also a presenter in CBBC's Match of the Day Kickabout.[11]
