Bengal Institute of Technology (BIT) is a private engineering college located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The college was established in the year 2000 with four AICTE approved Courses. It is a part of Techno India Group. The institute is approved by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and affiliated to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (formerly WBUT).It is situated on Basanti Highway a few kilometers off from downtown Kolkata in a lush green picturesque setting.

Campus

BIT Main building

The college has two campuses, one for Biotechnology Department and the other (aka BIT Main Building) for the remaining departments. Both buildings are entirely covered by Wi-Fi facility. The library has a total collection of 34612 books of almost 3436 titles covering a verse area of subjects. There is a student activity center for co-curricular and extracurricular activities.[1]


Academics

Bengal Institute of Technology offers four years Bachelor of Technology courses in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Information Technology (IT), Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) and Bio-Technology (BT). The admission to these programmes is done through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) and JEE(Main). Currently the institute has a total of 120 seats in CSE, 60 seats in IT, 90 seats in ECE and 30 seats in BT.

Department of Computer Science and Information Technology

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering and Infomation Technology is the largest department in BIT, which started its journey back in 2000, with the very beginning of the Institute. With the objective of imparting quality education in the field of Computer Science & Information Technology, the department has always produced quality professionals, holding important positions in the IT industry in India and abroad. The department undertakes many joint projects and organise events in collaboration with the industry with the objective of connecting the students and their potential employers. The department has successfully conducted industry collaborated programs like Infosys Campus Connect Program, IBM great mind challenge, Wipro Mission 10x in recent years.

Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering

The department of Electronics and communication engineering started its journey in the year 2000 which is the inception year of this institute. It is one of the best teaching centers with widespread reputation in the region. The department has large number of modern equipment in its almost all laboratories in the field of electronics, digital electronics and microprocessors, communications including optical and microwave communications. Several students who have passed out successfully of this department are holding important positions at the national and international levels.

Department of Bio-Technology

The department of Biotechnology offers 4- year B.Tech course in Biotechnology. It started its journey in the year 2002. The department has proved itself a unique place for making bio-technologists and biochemical engineers compatible for both industries and research institutes. The department has an integrated approach towards education as well as research. Bengal Institute of Technology and Biotechnology pioneer TCG Life science signed a MoU and came together to established a state of art lab at college premises. The mission for establishing this lab is to equip the students with current industry know how. Job oriented courses are also conducted regularly for our students. Department of Biotechnology conduct various sponsored research projects for both B Tech (BT) students and PG Students of other Universities and Institute and Published number of Scientific papers in reputed Index factor containing Journals, every year.  Present ongoing  projects  entitled “Development of bottle gourd & cucumber based health drinks” is funded by Ministry of Food Processing and Horticulture, Govt. of West Bengal.

Department of Basic Science and Humanities

The Department of Basic Science & Humanities was established in 2000 with the other departments. The department comprises Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Humanities. Since its commencement, the department has imparted quality education and training at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in various areas of Engineering. The infrastructure and lab facilities are being established to provide adequate opportunities for students to learn practical aspect of Basic Science & Humanities.

Central Library

Since its inception in 2000, Bengal Institute of Technology library has played a pivotal role in disseminating information, promoting education, offering career guidance, and strengthening knowledge partnerships that cross national, social, and ethnic boundaries. The library provides electronically accessed material and provides the assistance of library staff in navigating and analyzing large amounts of information with a variety of digital tools. BIT library is divided into departments staffed by both paraprofessionals and professional library staff. BIT Library is life member of Institute of Engineers Kolkata Chapter. It is currently subscribed to 29 hard copy journals including 12 from Institute of Engineers (Springer Publication). The library has 34612 books of almost 3436 titles covering diverse subjects such as sociology, bioinformatics, game theory, and microprocessors.

Ranking

Bengal Institute of Technology ranked 5th in West Bengal, 91st in India among all Engineering Institutes by NIRF, Dept. of Higher Education, MHRD, Govt. of India in 2016. In 2018, it was in the rank band 151 to 200 and in 2020, it has been ranked in the rank band 251 to 300 by NIRF, Dept. of Higher Education, MHRD, Govt. of India.[2]

Training and Placement

High quality final placements even in recession years truly make the placement record at BIT palpable. The On Campus recruitment program keeps continuing till the end of year, and after that Placement Cell helps the students by arranging Off-Campus Interviews also. What also sets apart this Institute is its ability to emerge stronger from downturns. The Placement Cell gets involved in the process right from identifying the corporate houses to corporate interactions throughout the year, and the pre-placement talks thereafter, to coordinate activities during Placement Days.
