Baishya Saha

Saha (Bengali: সাহা) is a surname used by those mostly residing in Bengal. Baishya signifies a business-oriented lineage. The surnames Shah, Sahu, Saha, Shaha, etc are variants of one another which have evolved from the word "Sah" over time. Shah of Gujrat is a trading community. During course of hundreds of years they settled in UP, Bihar, Bengal. Shah is deformed as Sao, Shahu, Shaha,[1] etc. Another variant is Sheth. In the Gujarat and Rajasthan region, the name 'Shah' is derived from Gujarati Sah meaning "Merchant" (from Sanskrit sadhu[2] meaning "Honest, Good" and Prakrit "Sahu") while the actual spelling "Shah" was popularized by the Persian word for King. As a result, especially in Western culture, use of the spelling "Shah" has become far more pronounced than the other variants. The word Sadhu/Sahu is also separately used to indicate a holy man, such as a Jain monk (see Namokar Mantra).

Thus the words "Shah", "Saha" (Bengal) etc. all indicate a respected member of the mercantile community. People with surname Saha are affluent and socially influential among the Hindus. [3]
