Amrin Amin

Amrin Amin (Jawi: امرين أمين) is a former Singaporean politician. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sembawang Group Representation Constituency (GRC) for Woodlands from 11 September 2015 to 23 June 2020. He was also the Senior Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry for Home Affairs and Ministry for Health from 1 May 2018 to 10 July 2020. Prior to this, he was the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry for Home Affairs from 1 October 2015 to 30 April 2018 and of the Ministry for Health from 11 October 2017 to 30 April 2018 till his promotions in both ministries in 1 May 2018.[1] He lost his Member of Parliament seat in the 2020 Singaporean general election.[2][3]

Education

Amrin Amin was educated at Griffiths Primary School (now known as Angsana Pri) before moving onto Dunman Secondary School and Tampines Junior College before reading law at the National University of Singapore, LLB (Honours) and Columbia University in New York, LLM (Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar).[4]

Career

He was a solicitor at Watson, Farley & Williams Asia Practice LLP, and also is a member of National Council on Problem Gambling as well as the governing board of Nanyang Polytechnic.[5] He became a corporate lawyer and partner at Joseph Tan Jude Benny LLP in 2015[6][7][8][9][10]

Amrin became a prominent grassroots activist in Sembawang GRC soon after the General Elections of 2011,[11] and in 2015, Amrin was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Sembawang GRC, replacing outgoing PAP MP Ellen Lee.[12] He was appointed Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs subsequently.[13] In the 2015 Cabinet reshuffling, he was appointed as the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Health.[14]

During the 2020 general election, Amrin contested with a PAP team in the newly created Sengkang GRC made up by Sengkang West Single Member Constituency (SMC), Punggol East SMC and parts of the Pasir Ris–Punggol GRC. The PAP team was defeated by the Worker's Party team which had won the election with 60,136 votes (52.13%) to 55,214 votes (47.87%), resulting in an electoral defeat.[15] This is the second instance of the ruling PAP losing a GRC to the Opposition since their loss in 2011 to the Worker's Party in Aljunied GRC.[16]
