2020 CONCACAF Nations League Finals

The 2020 CONCACAF Nations League Finals will be the final tournament of the 2019–20 edition of the CONCACAF Nations League, the inaugural season of the international football competition involving the men's national teams of the member associations of CONCACAF. The tournament will be contested by the four group winners of Nations League A, and will consist of two semi-finals, a third place play-off, and final to determine the inaugural champions of the CONCACAF Nations League.

The tournament was originally to be held in United States from 4 to 7 June 2020. On April 3, 2020 the tournament was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[1] On 27 July 2020, CONCACAF announced that the Finals would be held in March 2021.[2]

Format

The Nations League Finals was to take place in June 2020 and contested by the four group winners of League A. The semi-final pairings, were determined by the group stage rankings (1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3) and the administrative home teams for the third place play-off and final, were announced on 9 March 2020.[3]

The tournament was take place over four days, with the first semi-final (which features the host team) on 6 June, the second semi-final also on 6 June, and the third place play-off and final on 9 June.[3]

The Nations League Finals were played in single-leg knockout matches. In the semi-finals and third place game, extra time is not played if tied after regulation, and the match is decided by a penalty shoot-out. In the final, extra time is played if tied after regulation, and if still tied after extra time, the match is decided by a penalty shoot-out (Regulations Article 12.11).[4]

Venues

The United States were officially confirmed as the tournament hosts on 9 March 2020.

Original venues

Matches were originally to be played at three venues in two cities in Texas, before the postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[3]

  • BBVA Stadium was originally to host the first semi-final between Honduras and the United States on 4 June 2020, 18:30 CDT.
  • NRG Stadium was originally to host the second semi-final between Mexico and Costa Rica on 4 June 2020, 21:00 CDT.
  • AT&T Stadium was originally to host the third place play-off and final on 7 June 2020, 16:30 and 19:00 CDT.

In the semi-finals and third place game, extra time is not played if tied after regulation, and the match is decided by a penalty shoot-out.
