Summary
Real Madrid ended up its tumultuous awful domestic season since 1976-77 season by finished in lowly 6th place. Contrary to the previous nine seasons under the guidance of Leo Beenhakker, John Toshack, Alfredo Di Stéfano, Radomir Antić, Benito Floro, Vicente del Bosque and Jorge Valdano, Real Madrid's offense malfunctioned as a root cause of worst domestic season by massive injuries of key players. In November, Ramón Mendoza was resigned as president due to the economic, social, and sporting problems of the club, with successful Real Madrid director Lorenzo Sanz promoted to presidency as a task of Real Madrid's recovery. Three-months later Jorge Valdano was sacked as a consequence of Real Madrid's domestic league bad form and also earliest domestic Cup exit after being eliminated by Espanyol in the round of 16 with former Deportivo La Coruña manager Arsenio Iglesias taking over.
With Iglesias at the helm, Real Madrid managed to salvage some respectability by reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League, then Real Madrid suffered European exit after being eliminated by Juventus 2-1 by aggregate. But following Real Madrid's Champions League quarter-final exit, Real Madrid forced to end up Europe-less for the next season due to a lowly sixth place in the league and also end up a trophy-less season.
