National Football League ,in opposition to the amateur controlling body, a professional league started in South Africa. The league kicked off ,with 4 matches, on 4 July 1959. Johannesburg Rangers V Benoni United,Wembley Stadium. Germiston Callies V Arcadia Shepherd,Driehoek. Brakpan United V Southern Park,Brakpan. Randfontein V Johannesburg City,Randfontein.5 July 1959 Durban City played Arcadia Shepherds at Hoy Park. The other teams were-Durban United,Benoni United,Pretoria City,Southern Park,Maritzburg United.

Durban City were the first league winners. Johannesburg Rangers beat Germiston Callies 4-2,in the Castle Cup Final. Rand Stadium.
