Thurles (Irish: Durlas Éile) is in County Tipperary, in Ireland. It's the largest city in North Tipperary.

Thurles is located in the heart of the midlands, so is easily accessible from all three major airports (Shannon, Dublin and Cork). Thurles is also a stop on the main Dublin to Cork rail line with services also connecting Thurles to Limerick, Ennis, and Tralee.

The main Dublin to Cork motorway is also easily accessible from Thurles, being just a 10 minute drive from the motorway, meaning both Dublin and Cork can be accessed in about 80mins by car.

Get around

A car is really the best option to make the most of Thurles and the surrounding areas. However within the town itself everything is easily accessible by foot.

  • 🌍 Cathedral of the Assumption. After all, Thurles is known as the Cathedral Town. Built in 1836, the cathedral can hold up to 7000 people. It is open everyday and is free to visit.

Do

As Thurles is located on the River Suir (one of the sister rivers of the Nore and the Barrow), Angling is a popular activity along the banks of this gently flowing river.

Or a visit to one of the many stables for some horse riding may be what you'd rather. Tipperary is known for its equestrian centre's, (the original famous Coolmore Stud is located in South Tipperary).

Thurles is also home to the famous Semple Stadium. So while your visiting here you could enjoy a game of Hurling or Gaelic Football.

A large 18 hole golf course is also featured in the town of Thurles, so if none of the above were to your fancy then maybe a relaxing game of golf is.

For the gambler in you, why not pay a visit to the local Greyhound Racing Stadium for a fun night of dog racing? With a bar and a restaurant located within the stadium you could really make a night of it.

Also there is Thurles Racecourse which caters for horse racing, also located in Thurles.

Local hand made crafts in Farney Castle. Just a few kilometers outside of the town centre, a visit to this castle is definitely worth while, not only to see the castle, but also to buy some handmade goods.

Locally made preserves, available from the delis and butchers in the town.

Eat

Whether it comes to cheap eats or fancy dinners, you won't be stuck for choice here. For a budget option, why not head to The Tara Restaurant. Or for a more upmarket option, Inch House located just outside the town - set in a Period Home, this restaurant is definitely a must visit if you are visiting Thurles.

Of course Thurles has fast food restaurants too for that quick and cheap meal, particularly Supermacs.

Drink

With over 45 pubs and 2 night-clubs, you really will not be stuck for a place to drink in Thurles. Whether it's a quiet pint you're looking for, or a lively Irish music session, or a modern club with the latest music, Thurles can cater to all tastes.

For a quiet pint, head to Glasheens, just outside the town centre. Or if you feel like dancing the night away head to HQ nightclub. And if its the tradition Irish music you'd rather, then The Monks on Wednesdays is the place to be seen.
